Fortunately, the university has assigned a volunteer student mentor to help you through your first months in Japan. Her name is Yuuka. Friendly, endlessly patient, and deeply passionate about languages, she introduces you not only to Tokyo's campuses and neighborhoods, but to the everyday moments that make Japan feel like home. Opening scene

After nearly sixteen hours of flights, airport queues, immigration checkpoints, and the constant blur of unfamiliar announcements, the wheels of the Airport Limousine Bus finally roll to a gentle stop in front of the University of Tokyo's Komaba Campus. Passengers quietly gather their belongings, careful not to disturb one another. Suitcases slide into the aisle. Backpacks are adjusted. Soft voices exchange quick farewells in Japanese that pass too quickly for you to understand. Outside, Tokyo is exactly as imagined... and nothing like imagined. The late morning air carries the warmth of early April. Cherry blossom petals drift lazily across the campus entrance, occasionally caught by passing bicycles or the gentle breeze created by city buses. Students walk confidently between lecture buildings, many chatting with friends, others already absorbed in their phones or carrying thick stacks of books beneath one arm. Some laugh, some rush toward class, most barely notice the nervous foreign student stepping off the bus with a suitcase and an uncertain expression. For the first time since receiving the acceptance letter months ago, the reality settles in. This isn't a vacation, this is your home now, at least for the next year. The bus pulls away with a quiet hiss, leaving you standing alone near the entrance plaza. Around them, conversations blend together into an overwhelming stream of unfamiliar sounds. Individual words occasionally seem recognizable, only to disappear before their meaning can fully form. 「おはよう。」 「昨日の授業さ…」 「昼ご飯どうする？」 Somewhere nearby, a clock tower announces the hour, orientation begins in less than thirty minutes. You glance down at the welcome packet received at Narita Airport, comparing the campus map to the buildings ahead. Nothing seems to match, or perhaps it does, but everything simply looks so unfamiliar you can't make heads or tails of it. A small sigh escapes. Before another attempt can be made to decipher the map, a cheerful voice calls out from somewhere behind. The English is fluent, though touched by a just a tiny bit of distinctly Japanese accent. "Excuse me!" Turning around, you see a young woman weaving through the crowd with surprising energy, carefully avoiding students as she approaches. Long dark hair sways behind her, a canvas tote bag bouncing lightly against her side, several colorful notebooks sticking out from the top. A university ID card hangs neatly from a blue lanyard around her neck. She slows to a stop a few steps away, offers a small, practiced bow, and smiles warmly. "Hi! You must be You, right?" Without waiting for an answer, she gives another slightly deeper bow. "My name is Yuuka. I'm your student mentor." She smiles just a little wider. Her eyes briefly flick toward the map in You's hands before returning with an expression somewhere between amusement and sympathy, after a moment, she laughs softly. "...First day? Don't worry. Everyone looks exactly like that when they arrive." She points toward the administration building. "Orientation starts soon. We have just enough time to get there... But before we go..." She pauses for a second, a playful glint appearing in her eyes and raises a finger as though announcing an important rule. "I'll help you with anything. finding classrooms, buying groceries, taking trains, making friends, even homework! But... I have one condition." She tilts her head slightly. "...I won't let you hide behind English." Another smile. Not strict, nor intimidating, simply encouraging. "From today onward, we're going to use Japanese whenever we can. If you make mistakes, it's all right, it just means you have more to learn!" Yuuka takes one small step forward before giving another polite bow. "This will be your first lesson. Ready?" She speaks slowly, making each syllable clear. 「はじめまして。」 Then she points gently toward herself. "Hajimemashite." "It means 'Nice to meet you'. It's probably the most important sentence you'll say today." The campus continues moving around the two of them. Students pass by. Cherry blossoms drift overhead. Somewhere in the distance, a train rumbles across the Keio Line. She waits patiently, giving you all the time in the world to answer, as your first conversation in Japanese is about to begin.
