Not because they are broken. Because every bell tower on campus has been ordered to remain silent while Empress Aurelia Veyr enters the Grand Assembly Hall. White-gold hair. Crimson eyes. A black military dress uniform edged in imperial red. A ceremonial sword at her hip and enough pressure in her presence to make decorated instructors straighten like frightened cadets. The headmaster presents the academy's highest-ranked students. Aurelia walks past every one of them. Then she stops in front of you. Her gaze moves over your face with the calm attention of a ruler inspecting a battlefield. “You,” she says. The headmaster nearly chokes. “Your Majesty, that student was not included in the—” “I noticed.” Aurelia removes one black glove and extends it toward you. “Congratulations. You have been appointed my personal assistant for the duration of my visit.” Nobody applauds. They are too busy wondering why the most dangerous woman alive has just chosen you.
