Opening scene

White light swallows everything. For one impossible instant there is no ground beneath your feet, no sound, no sense of direction. Then the light disappears. You find yourself standing at the center of an enormous circular chamber carved from pale stone. Ancient golden runes surround the summoning platform, though many flicker weakly before sputtering out entirely. The air smells of incense, burnt magic, and the unmistakable scent of people who have repeated the same ritual far too many times. Nobody cheers. Nobody gasps. A pair of royal guards barely glance in your direction before returning to their conversation. Several court mages are already packing away expensive-looking magical equipment. One quietly hands another a coin, apparently settling a bet. At the far end of the chamber sits a king upon an ornate throne. He looks at you. Then he looks down at an enormous leather-bound ledger. He slowly turns a page. "...Four hundred..." Another page. "...Seventeen." His shoulders sag. Without saying a word, he raises one hand and presses it firmly against his face. He leaves it there. "Hero Number Four Hundred and Seventeen," he says through his fingers. "Brave champion summoned from another world... humanity welcomes you in its darkest hour." His voice is polished. Professional. Utterly devoid of enthusiasm. "You have been chosen by fate to defeat the Demon Twins and save our kingdom." One of the court mages hesitantly clears his throat. The king doesn't move. "...Yes?" "The ritual report, Your Majesty." The king sighs. "What now?" The court mage lowers the crystal. "...No divine blessing has been granted." The king blinks. "...The ritual failed?" A calm voice answers from above. "No." Warm golden light fills the chamber as a young woman gracefully descends onto the summoning platform, one hand resting confidently on her hip. Her platinum-blonde hair shimmers beneath the divine glow as she looks directly at you with complete indifference. "The ritual worked perfectly." She studies you for a long moment. Then sighs. "I simply chose not to waste one." Silence. The chamber freezes. The king lowers his hand from his face just enough to stare at her. "...You... what?" Avelina folds her arms. "Four hundred and sixteen Heroes." "Four hundred and sixteen blessings." "Four hundred and sixteen failures." She shrugs. "At some point, even a goddess begins questioning her investment strategy." A tired man nods solemnly. "...She stopped believing around Hero Three Hundred." "Hero Two Hundred and Seventy-Four," Avelina corrects without hesitation. She looks back toward you. "For what it's worth..." A brief pause. "...I'm almost certain this won't be personal." Another pause. "I simply have absolutely no faith in you whatsoever." She smiles pleasantly. "I do wish you the best of luck, though." Another silence settles over the chamber. The king slowly rubs his temples. "...Right." "Well." "That's somehow even more discouraging than usual." She continues. "No heroic abilities." "No sacred weapon." "No unusual magical aptitude." The king remains perfectly still for several long seconds. "...Did we get anything?" Avelina looks at him without batting an eye. "...You successfully summoned a perfectly ordinary human." The king slowly nods. "I had suspected as much." A man in faded, heavily repaired hero's armour lets out a defeated sigh from nearby. His shoulders slump so dramatically they seem to sink another inch. Anton offers you a tired smile. "On the bright side..." He pauses to think. "...Actually no, forget I said anything." You glance toward him. He offers a hand. "Anton. Hero Number Twelve." He pauses. "I've survived long enough to watch four hundred and four people try after me." Another pause. "Wouldn't recommend it." A loud *glug... glug... glug...* draws your attention across the chamber. A beautiful ash-blonde woman lazily empties the last of a liquor bottle before lowering it with obvious satisfaction. *Hic.* She blinks. Then breaks into uncontrollable giggling. "Oh..." she snorts between laughs. "They finally skipped the hero part." Another hiccup. She points the empty bottle vaguely in your direction. "That's actually... that's actually hilarious." She laughs even harder. The king pinches the bridge of his nose. "...Annabelle." "What?" "Please stop encouraging the newest hero." "I'm not encouraging him." She grins. "I'm lowering his expectations." Anton nods solemnly. "That's actually the kindest thing anyone's done for a summoned hero in decades." The king closes the ledger with a dull thud. "...As I was saying." He looks directly at you for the first time. "We have summoned four hundred and seventeen heroes." "Four hundred and sixteen have failed." His expression somehow becomes even more tired. "And now..." He glances briefly toward the ceiling, as though questioning every decision that brought him here. "...it's your turn." Before anyone can dismiss the ceremony, a young woman cheerfully steps beside you. "Great!" "When do we leave?" The king slowly closes his eyes. "...Penelope." "Yes?" "You're not going." She smiles at him. "I wasn't asking." She turns to you. "So." She beams. "Where are we going first?"
