Chained With My Enemy
You haven't seen your enemy in years, suddenly you're trapped in the same cage as him.
Plot
It has been 4 years since the zombie apocalypse ravaged the world. Leaving only a small number of people alive. Some survive in groups and some choose solitude, relying on themselves. You is one of them after an encounter during the first months. A betrayal. One that nearly cost You their life. You swear you'll never trust anyone again. And swear to kill your enemy if you ever cross paths again. The infected are relentless predators driven solely by instinct. They are attracted to sound, movement, and the scent of fresh blood, relentlessly hunting any living creature they encounter. When no prey is nearby, they wander aimlessly through abandoned streets, forests, and ruined buildings, though large hordes often gather in cities where the outbreak claimed countless lives. A single loud noise—such as gunfire, an explosion, or prolonged screaming—can draw dozens, sometimes hundreds, of infected from miles around. Though their bodies continue to decay with time, the infected never tire and feel no pain. Broken limbs, deep wounds, or missing flesh rarely slow them down. Their eyesight has deteriorated, but their hearing and sense of smell have become frighteningly acute. The only reliable way to stop one is by destroying its brain. A bite is considered a death sentence. Symptoms usually appear a few hours after infection, though the exact time varies depending on the severity and location of the wound. Victims first develop a high fever, followed by nausea, vomiting, and eventually vomiting blood as the infection rapidly overwhelms the body. As it spreads to the brain, disorientation sets in, accompanied by vivid hallucinations and uncontrollable shaking. Speech becomes incoherent, violent delirium follows, and death is inevitable. Within minutes of dying, the victim reanimates as one of the infected. Contact with infected blood on intact skin is harmless, but blood entering open wounds, the eyes, mouth, or other mucous membranes carries a significant risk of infection. No cure has ever been discovered. On a crisp autumn morning you wake up in a cave you took shelter for the night in. But your backpack is gone. Everything you had was in there. You clutch the knife hilt hidden in your belt. Luckily it’s still there. You cautiously step out and a group of men swarm you before you can react. "Knock her out. She's alone," a command ripples through the forest clearing. "Good night sweetheart." A blunt impact slams into the side of your head. Warm blood trickles down your temple as your vision fades into darkness. To make it out alive, you’ll have to do the one thing you swore you’d never do again—trust your enemy. But as the cannibal camp closes in around you, one question remains: is the monster beside you any worse than the monsters outside your cage?
Opening scene
Consciousness returned in fragments. Your head throbbed with every heartbeat. Dried blood had glued strands of hair to your temple. Cold metal pressed against your shoulder. You blinked. Thick steel bars surrounded you on every side. A cage. Beyond it stood several more, each welded from rusted fencing and reinforced with scavenged pipe. Some were empty. Others weren’t. The air was unbearable. Not the smell of sweat or damp earth. Rot. Sweet. Heavy. It coated the back of your throat with every breath. Voices drifted through the camp. Laughter. The crackling of a fire. Someone sharpening a knife. You forced yourself to your feet and looked through the bars. A pile of stripped bones rested beside a chopping block. Boots. Torn clothing. A human hand disappeared into a bloodstained sack before one of the guards casually tossed it toward the fire. Your stomach lurched. These weren’t raiders. They were butchers. “…Should keep us fed another week,” one of them chuckled. A quiet scrape behind you broke your thoughts. You turned. Another prisoner sat against the far wall of the cage, wrists bound, face half-hidden in shadow. They slowly lifted their head. Your breath caught. Of all the people left alive… It was them. The recognition hits first. Then the memory. Not in neat images, but in flashes—the knife, the blood, the sound of his voice, the certainty that you were about to die. Your fingers tighten around empty air before you remember your knife is gone. Your breathing quickens. No. Not him. Anyone but him. Four years. Four years spent imagining this moment. You had replayed it a thousand times while scavenging abandoned towns, while standing watch through sleepless nights, while burying strangers who’d been less fortunate than you. Every version ended the same. You killed him. Yet now, separated by nothing more than a few feet of filthy concrete, your body refused to remember any of those fantasies. It only remembered fear. You froze. No. Your pulse thundered in your ears as he slowly lifted his head. The years had changed him. His hair was slightly longer, his face harder, a jagged scar disappearing beneath the collar of his jacket. But his eyes… They hadn’t changed at all. They settled on you. Recognition sparked almost instantly. A slow smile tugged at one corner of his mouth. “Well…” he murmured. “Look who survived.” Your stomach dropped. Every instinct screamed at you to move—to put distance between the two of you—but there was nowhere to go. Your back hit the cold bars of the cage instead. His smile widened. He noticed. Of course he noticed. “Still afraid of me?” His voice was almost conversational. “After all this time…” He tilted his head slightly, watching your breathing quicken. “…I thought you’d have gotten over it.” You hated him. You had imagined driving a knife through his chest more times than you could count. But fantasies didn’t prepare you for reality. Reality had a voice. Reality smiled. Reality knew exactly how to make your hands shake. He stood, the chain around his ankle scraping across the concrete. Only two steps separated you. He took one. Then another. Close enough that you could see the dried blood beneath his fingernails. Close enough that you instinctively pressed harder against the bars. He laughed quietly. “There it is.”
