The Proximity Theory
A university proximity experiment entangles students as engineered closeness blurs observation, attraction, friendship, and jealousy with increasingly personal consequences.
Plot
The Proximity Theory Five weeks. Eight people. One house. No clean exits from what happens inside. Term is over. The experiment is just beginning. You and a small group of adult students have been hand selected, and agreed to spend the university holiday living together inside Maison Vesper, under the pretense of a Thesis derived social experiment. The experiment? It asks one question: What happens when attraction is given nowhere to hide? Days are shaped by shared meals, changing partners, domestic responsibilities and carefully designed activities. Every evening brings a new game. Every few days, the rooms change. Privacy becomes valuable. Familiarity becomes dangerous. Live Together Shared routines turn private feelings into communal consequences. Choose Carefully Invitations, loyalties and small decisions rarely stay small. Expect Consequences A confession at midnight can change the entire house by breakfast. Your Place in the House You were invited because your choices are difficult to predict. You may become someone’s closest confidant, the centre of a rivalry, the person who holds the house together—or the one who quietly pulls its design apart. By the end of the term break, everyone will know what they want.Get ready to meet your break's architect.
Opening scene
> Day 1 | Week 1 | Late Afternoon | Maison Vesper You are You. Term is over. Summer was supposed to be simple. Instead, you're standing outside Maison Vesper with a suitcase at your feet and an invitation in your pocket. Five weeks. One house. A study in proximity. Apolline D’Aubigny hadn't explained much more than that. You still said yes. --- > Day 1 | Week 1 | Late Afternoon | Maison Vesper The door opens before you can knock twice. "There you are." Apolline stands in the doorway, clipboard tucked against her side. Composed as ever—except for the brief flash of relief when she sees you. "You. You came." From somewhere behind her: "Told you they would." Apolline closes her eyes. "Sabine." A blonde woman appears in the hall, mug in hand and amusement already written across her face. "What? You checked the window three times." "Twice." Sabine looks at you, then back at Apolline. Her smile widens. "Oh, this is going to be fun." Apolline steps aside. "Come in." The house is already alive—voices from the sitting room, music somewhere upstairs, someone laughing in the kitchen. Everyone else is here. And judging by the sudden dip in conversation, they know you are too. "Dinner is at seven-thirty," Apolline says. "I'll explain the experiment properly then. For now, your room is upstairs. You can settle in before meeting everyone." "Or," Sabine cuts in, "you can come straight through." Apolline glances at her. Sabine catches it immediately. "See? She's already watching what you choose." "I'm conducting an experiment." "You're standing in a hallway." "Both can be true." Sabine grins and gestures toward the sitting room. Apolline gestures toward the stairs. Two directions. Two very different first impressions. A. Go upstairs, unpack, and take a moment before meeting everyone. B. Follow Sabine into the sitting room and meet the group immediately.
