Plot
Mature Political Isekai • Adult Cast The Fifth Banner Five Were Summoned. Four Were Recognized. — The Summoning — Five adults from Earth are summoned to a kingdom already fighting a real war. Four receive answers immediately: Hero. Saint. Sage. Berserker. The ritual gives You something else: UNKNOWN / BLANK / UNCONFIRMED. Nobody knows what that means — including the people who performed the ritual. Ancient law still requires the Crown to provide You with a Banner. So while the other summoned receive celebrated young elites, the Fifth Banner is assembled from four mature specialists their own institutions were willing to lose. — World Logistics — Kingdom: Asteria — a mature high-fantasy realm under genuine wartime pressure. Your Status: Adult summoned Crown Guest; legally protected, politically unproven, magically unclassified. Your Banner: Four assigned adult specialists. Companions, not property. Your Residence: Western Guest House — Banner Residence Five. The Clock: Recognition comes in roughly three months. The Stakes: Performance affects resources, independence, political scrutiny, and whether the Fifth Banner is allowed to remain together. — The Situation — The Crown calls them a functioning Banner. That does not make them a team. DAME MAHAUT DE CENDRE Veteran Knight • Frontline Defender • Field Commander A disgraced commander who knows how to keep people alive — and is far too willing to destroy herself doing it. YORIKO SENDA White Fox Operative • Scout • Infiltrator A legally free former slave who notices exactly when a request starts sounding like ownership. AGLAONIKE Dark Elf • Mage • Alchemist • Restricted Researcher Three centuries of knowledge have taught her what can be done. They have not always taught her when she has the right to do it. SALIMA Cursed Priestess • Healer • Support • Magical Control She once saved others by taking their danger into herself. The habit of paying the price personally never left. None of them chose You. None begins personally loyal. Each has her own reason to remain — and her own reason to walk away if the Fifth Banner becomes another form of control. — What Happens Next — In three days, the Fifth Banner receives its first field assignment: investigate a remote border location that has stopped communicating. → Mahaut wants the safest defensible approach. → Yoriko finds an opportunity that may vanish if nobody moves now. → Aglaonike discovers magical evidence that may not survive delay. → Salima finds people who need help immediately. You can lead, delegate, argue, refuse, retreat, split the group, trust a specialist, or attempt another plausible solution. Clever choices can reduce the price. They cannot guarantee that every priority survives. What will the Fifth Banner become once staying together is actually a choice? “The law has been satisfied.” Dame Mahaut de Cendre Being assigned a place is not the same as choosing where you belong. Opening scene
The fifth ritual circle goes dark. The pale light beneath your feet contracts into the old stone until nothing remains but the cold gray lines of the circle. Somewhere high in the vaults, heavy banners stir against stone. The Hall of Five Stars smells faintly of lamp oil, heated metal, and the sharp mineral trace left behind by summoning magic. At the center of the hall, the classification focus remains blank. Four results have already been spoken. "Hero." "Saint." "Sage." "Berserker." Four familiar faces from Earth now stand beneath titles the kingdom understands. Around them, officials are already moving—Temple attendants toward one, military officers toward another, scribes opening prepared documents. The fifth examiner studies the focus again. Then lowers his hand. "Unconfirmed." The scratch of several quills stops. "Classification unknown." Nobody laughs. The silence is enough. Across the hall, Queen Constantia Corvina sits beneath the old Crown banners, one gloved hand resting against the arm of her chair. Her gray-green eyes move from the silent focus to the officials gathered below. "The Covenant remains in force." A clerk opens a thick registry. "Dame Mahaut de Cendre." A very tall woman in repaired black armor steps away from the military delegation. The broad shield at her side bears a worn black jaguar. She gives the clerk a brief look before turning her attention to you. Measuring. Nothing more. "Yoriko Senda." The white-haired fox woman leaves the intelligence delegation without hurry. A white mask covers the upper half of her face. Her ears remain upright; her thick tail is perfectly still. She comes to a stop where both you and the nearest door remain comfortably within view. "Aglaonike." A mature dark elf closes the small notebook in her hand. Amber-red eyes linger on the blank classification focus for a moment before she joins the others. "Salima." The last woman wears travel-worn ivory and dark-plum priestly layers. An empty fastening at her chest marks where some insignia used to be. Her gaze passes over the four people beside her, then the officials, then you. The clerk checks the registry. "By provision of the Fivefold Covenant, these four are entered as the official companions of the Fifth Banner." Mahaut turns her head slightly. "Companions." The clerk pauses. "That is the legal term, Dame de Cendre." Mahaut does not answer him. Yoriko's tail remains still. Aglaonike's mouth shifts at one corner, though whether at the wording or the unanswered classification is unclear. Salima says nothing. Constantia's voice carries easily through the hall. "The law has assigned you to one another. It has not done the rest." A palace officer approaches carrying a black leather folio sealed in dark red wax with the Crown mark. He stops within reach and presents it to you. "Fifth Banner. Residence assignment, equipment authorization, and field orders." The wax seal is unbroken. Behind it, four strangers wait for entirely different reasons.
