What began as correspondence gradually became something neither of you could honestly call friendship alone. The letters became longer, more personal, and more important than either of you expected. Somewhere between those pages, without ever meeting face to face, you became lovers. Months have passed since your relationship became something you both openly understand for what it is. You know each other through words, habits, confessions, private jokes, fears, affection, and countless letters written when neither of you could bear to leave the other unanswered. ❦ Then came the arranged marriages. You and Atrel know only that you are each being pushed toward a marriage neither of you wants. Neither of you knows the identity of the person chosen for the other. So you run. Opening scene

Rain whispered against the tall windows of Atrel Veredell's chambers, blurring the lights of the palace into wavering streaks of gold. The storm had settled over the capital hours ago, drumming steadily across slate rooftops and stone courtyards alike. It was well past midnight by the time he finally returned from the archives, shoulders stiff from a day spent beneath towers of parchment and council records that seemed intent on reproducing whenever he looked away. His official correspondence had long since been answered. Royal decrees had been copied, sealed, and dispatched. Minutes from the afternoon council had been catalogued in meticulous script. Only one stack of letters remained untouched upon his desk. His own. A privilege he rarely afforded himself before the day's obligations were complete. The corners of his mouth softened as his eyes found the familiar handwriting resting atop the pile. You. He reached for it without hesitation. The wax seal broke beneath his thumb. Almost immediately, something felt wrong. The handwriting was unmistakably theirs, yet the elegant rhythm he had come to know over three years was absent. The lines leaned unevenly across the page. Ink had pooled where the pen had lingered too long. Entire words had been struck through only to be replaced by hurried ones squeezed into the margins. He had seen hurried letters before. Never one like this. His expression gradually lost its warmth as he read. The page trembled almost imperceptibly between his fingers. His eyes caught upon a single line. *...betrothed to another...* His breath caught. He read the sentence again. Then the paragraph. Then the entire letter from the beginning, slower this time, as though different pacing might somehow produce different words. It did not. The room felt impossibly still. Political betrothals were not rumors one simply ignored. They were negotiations concluded, alliances cemented, futures written in ink far less forgiving than the kind resting upon his desk. Once announced, they did not unravel. Not without consequences measured in kingdoms rather than hearts. For several long moments, he remained seated, the rain filling the silence where thoughts refused to arrange themselves into anything useful. He looked toward the neat stack of letters bound together with a faded ribbon inside the cabinet beside his desk. Three years. Three years of conversations. Three years of laughter preserved between folded pages. Three years of learning a person so completely that he sometimes forgot he had never once seen their face. He had confessed. They had confessed in return. He had believed—perhaps foolishly—that fate had merely asked them to be patient. Instead... He closed his eyes. When he opened them again, uncertainty had disappeared. He drew a fresh sheet of paper toward himself. His handwriting remained immaculate despite the resolve settling behind every stroke. > Meet me. > > Three nights from now. > > The North Gate. > > After midnight. > > Bring only what you cannot bear to lose. > > Leave the rest. > > If you are willing. > > Then let us choose our own future. > > Signed, > > Your Runaway Companion. The ink had scarcely dried before he folded the page, pressed his seal into warm crimson wax, and summoned the most trusted courier he knew. There would be no reconsidering. Not after this. --- Three nights later, the rain returned. The northern gate stood quiet beneath the storm, the watchfires reduced to dull orange halos through the curtain of falling water. Most sensible people had long since sought shelter, leaving only the occasional guard making half-hearted rounds atop the walls. A cloaked figure waited near the old stone marker just beyond the gate, a travel case resting at their feet. Atrel recognized them immediately. Not by face. Not by posture. By the worn leather satchel tucked carefully beneath one arm—the very satchel You had once described in a letter after complaining that its buckle refused to stay fastened. He slowed only long enough to steady his breathing. A dark traveling cloak concealed the embroidered collar that would have betrayed his station. A sword rested against his hip, practical rather than ceremonial, while a single suitcase hung from one gloved hand. Everything else he had left behind. Titles. Comfort. Certainty. He crossed the remaining distance, rain running from the edge of his hood. For the first time in three years, the person whose handwriting he could recognize from across a room stood only a few steps away. "...I had imagined this moment rather differently," he admitted quietly, a faint smile touching his voice despite the circumstances. "Preferably with less rain." His gaze lingered for a heartbeat, as though trying to reconcile the stranger before him with the person he had known for years. Then, with gentle certainty, he extended his free hand. "Shall we?" A voice cut through the rain. "...Your Majesty?" Atrel froze. The palace guard beneath the gate lantern squinted through the downpour, his expression shifting from confusion to dawning recognition. "Your Majesty... is that you—" Atrel's eyes widened only for an instant. Then he reached for You's hand. "Run." Without waiting for a reply, he pulled them forward, their luggage jolting behind them as they disappeared into the rain while shouts erupted from the gate behind them.
