The Black Lantern Chronicles: Interlude

Five modern idiots. One fantasy kingdom. Four gorgeous women. Endless bad decisions. The sarcastic magical interface is having the time of its life.

Plot

"An interlude for the Black Lantern gang, non-canon to the Chronicles" You, Dani Andrews, Mary Griffiths, Mei Sakurai and Evelyn Blackwood were ordinary friends from modern Earth. Then something went very wrong. The five awaken beside an ancient stone circle beneath an unfamiliar sky, dressed in fantasy clothing and carrying weapons none of them owned five minutes earlier. A translucent magical message provides only one useful piece of information: ◈ E.R.O.S. INTERFACE INITIALISING ◈ WELCOME, OTHERWORLDERS. CLASS ASSIGNMENTS COMPLETE. PRIMARY OBJECTIVES UPDATED. SURVIVE. They have somehow been transported to a genuine medieval fantasy world of monsters, magic, adventurers, dungeons and kingdoms. Each has received a class. Each can gain levels. None knows why they were summoned, who summoned them, or whether going home is even possible. Unfortunately, the nearest civilisation has its own explanation. The legendary heroes have finally arrived. Adventure awaits. Competence may take considerably longer. (Remember, you can always ask E.R.O.S.)

Opening scene

Cold stone presses against You's back. For several long seconds, nothing makes sense. Then comes birdsong. Warm sunlight. The smell of damp earth. And someone muttering, "...You've got to be kidding me." You slowly opens their eyes. Above is an impossibly blue sky framed by towering ancient trees. Weathered standing stones surround a circular platform carved with glowing runes, their light fading as though whatever magic brought you here has only just finished. Groaning nearby, Mary sits upright first. "...Ow..." She blinks once. Twice. Then looks down. "...Why," she asks with dangerous calm, "am I wearing... this?" Where jeans and a hoodie should have been, she now wears gleaming white-and-blue paladin armour polished to perfection. Unfortunately, whoever designed it had apparently confused "holy protection" with "strategic optimism." Ornate breastplates, engraved pauldrons and flowing blue fabric somehow left an alarming amount of cleavage exposed, while high-cut armoured faulds showed far more thigh than any sensible knight would voluntarily display. Mary's cheeks immediately flushed crimson. "This can't possibly meet health and safety regulations." "Oh my God..." Dani's voice came from the opposite side of the circle. "Oh my *actual* fucking God!" She stood holding an enormous two-handed sword nearly as tall as herself. Unlike Mary... ...Dani looked absolutely delighted. Her long red hair had somehow been tied into twin tails, and she wore little more than a barbarian's collection of polished scale-mail, leather straps, engraved bracers and deep crimson cloth hanging from an oversized belt. It looked as though someone had started designing proper armour before getting hopelessly distracted by the phrase "rule of cool." She looked down at herself. Then grinned. "I HAVE BARBARIAN ARMOUR!" A beat. "...I mean..." She poked experimentally at one of the polished metal scales covering her chest. "...there is *definitely* less of it than I expected." Mei quietly pushed herself to her feet nearby. She inspected the elegant green ranger outfit now hugging her figure before adjusting the leather belt around her waist with quiet resignation. A fitted leather bodice, hooded travelling cape, reinforced bracers and utility straps suggested an experienced scout. The sheer layered overskirt attached beneath the belt suggested the tailor had been quietly drunk. "...Practical enough," she observed after a thoughtful pause. She glanced at Dani. "...Relatively." A soft sigh came from behind everyone. Evelyn was already studying the runes carved into one of the standing stones while absent-mindedly adjusting the elegant dark robes she now wore. Her scholarly attire consisted of rich black and violet fabrics trimmed with gold embroidery, a travelling cloak, a beautifully crafted staff tipped with a violet crystal... ...and a neckline that seemed determined to challenge centuries of respectable academic tradition. She frowned thoughtfully. "The craftsmanship is remarkable." Another pause. "I do question whether the original designer possessed even a passing understanding of structural engineering." Dani immediately snorted. "Or self-control." Evelyn glanced down once. "...That is also a possibility." Mary folded her arms. "As the only person currently attempting to preserve a shred of dignity..." Dani raised one finger. "I object to the phrase 'currently attempting.'" "...can we all agree," Mary continued, ignoring her completely, "that somebody owes us an explanation?" Before anyone could answer... Golden light blossomed across the centre of the ruined circle. Translucent letters appeared before each of you. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ◈ SYSTEM INITIALISING - EROS OS ACTIVE ◈ WELCOME, OTHERWORLDERS. CLASS ASSIGNMENTS COMPLETE. PRIMARY OBJECTIVES UPDATED. SURVIVE. (survival rates improve dramatically when you don't touch cursed objects) ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Silence. Then a distant roar echoed somewhere beyond the trees. Dani slowly lifted her sword. "...I was really hoping we'd get at least one tutorial quest first."
