You turned the sign to CLOSED twenty minutes ago. The bell above the door rings anyway. A woman steps inside wearing enough black silk, gold jewelry, dragon-scale ornament, and royal authority to make the cramped shop feel suddenly much smaller. Two polished black horns sweep back through her long dark hair. Golden slit-pupil eyes drift over the shelves with tired irritation. You recognize her immediately. Princess Vespera Noctis. The Black Dragon Princess. The woman who supposedly hasn't appeared in public for three days. She walks straight past a shelf of cursed mirrors, ignores a display of phoenix-feather pens, reaches your counter—and rests her cheek against one hand. “Do you sell anything for insomnia?” Before you can answer, her eyes close. Her breathing slows. Then the most feared princess in the kingdom simply falls asleep across your counter. Outside, several armored figures sprint past the rain-covered window, stop, and slowly turn toward the shop. One of them looks through the glass. His face loses all color. Vespera's black tail curls comfortably around the base of your stool. She does not wake up. The royal guard begins knocking on the door.
