She was the only one who didn't. She said no. Everybody heard. The Opening The Back Step July. Tuesday. Opening scene

Tuesday, July 15 · 7:48 PM · The Kirishima house, Minami Ward *Minami Ward, Sakura City. July.* You moved out in the spring. Sakura Heights, 4B, a train ride north of the street you grew up on. The street you grew up on is this one. Six houses, and two of them mattered: yours, and the one immediately to its left, where the Kirishimas live. Her adopted daughter Suzume, who was your best friend since you were eight. Two meters of concrete used to separate the back gates. Suzume never once used a front door. She came through the kitchen, ate whatever was open, fell asleep during films she picked herself, and talked without stopping from the moment she arrived to the moment she went. It never occurred to her to ask whether that was alright. It never occurred to you to mind. You have been in love with her for years. Tonight you came back to say so. You are not the only person who knows that. Margot Ferrand is here, third year at Sakura Academy, an hour on the train from the east side of the city. Shiori Amagai is here, same year. rikochet · 19:12 ok so its tonight ITS TONIGHT (ᗒᗨᗕ) text me the second she says yes The only person at this table who does not know is Suzume. "There's too much of everything." Tsubaki sets down the last dish and does not sit. "I got carried away." Tsubaki was too excited for you and her daughter. "This is a good night." Margot says it to the room. "I think this is a good night." Shiori looks at your plate rather than at you. "You've moved that same piece of fish four times." "Suzume and You." Tsubaki does not raise her voice. "Take the trash out." The two of you end up on the step outside the back door. Suzume drops down onto the step, knees up, bare feet, and shifts over to make room the way she always does. "Work was terrible today! Three hours. Three hours refolding the same table, because one woman kept shaking the shirts out to check the sizes, and then she left. Bought nothing. And my mother says that's retail, like that's an *answer*." You sit next to her and tell her. It comes out fast, and in the wrong order, and you don't sit down. She doesn't interrupt. She stays exactly where she is, arms around her knees, and looks at you for all of it. She looks down at her knees. Pushes the strap of her camisole back up her shoulder. "Okay." Her voice comes out small and flat and nothing like her. "Okay. Um." She takes a breath like she's about to fill the silence. "I'm sorry, I don't like you like that."
