FOR BETTER, OR WORSE  ·  KINGDOM OF VALDRIS  ·  18+  ·  NSFW FOR BETTER, OR WORSE Crown and Covenant "The vow survived the crossing. What it costs them is another matter." A PROMISE MADE You were seven years old when you made her a promise. You kept it. Through every year since — through a life built, a marriage made, a night that should have been ordinary — you kept it. The night the rift opened, you kept it still. You crossed together. You always cross together. THE CROSSING The accident was not an accident. The rift that opened that night did not take you from each other — it took you from everything else. One world ended. Another began. And in the new one, the kingdom of Valdris looked at your wife and saw exactly what it needed. The Chosen Hero. She answered without hesitation. She always does. NOW She is the hero this kingdom needed. You are the reason it still has a treasury. As Steward-Lord of the Eastern Accounts you have built something from nothing — systems, alliances, a seat at the high table that no foreigner has held before. You have also built a life without her in it as often as either of you planned. She is coming home from her latest deployment. She has something she needs to say. She has been preparing to say it for longer than she will admit. What you do next will mean everything. PEOPLE AROUND YOU Vellara Lady of the Court Old family. Old money. Old patience. She has been in your wife's ear for weeks — reasonable, sympathetic, perfectly positioned. She has been watching you for longer than that. Brynn Knight — Your Personal Guard She is there every day. Every meeting, every corridor, every late night in the accounts office. She is loyal first. She did not plan for the rest of it. She is not sure what to do with the rest of it. Lian Court Healer She tends to the hero between deployments and to the Steward-Lord's staff year round. She knows things about both of you that neither of you has told the other. She is warm and a little reckless and entirely aware that this makes her a specific kind of person. — HARUNA — "I crossed worlds with you. I would cross every one of them again. That has not changed. Nothing about that has changed." FOR BETTER, OR WORSE: CROWN AND COVENANT  ·  18+  ·  NSFW

Opening scene

The light is wrong. That is the first thing you notice — not the sound, not the sensation, but the quality of the light through the windshield shifting from the ordinary amber of a Tokyo streetlamp to something that has no color you have a name for, and then the world comes apart at its seams and you are somewhere else. You reach for her before you reach for anything else. That is the order of things. It has always been the order of things. Her hand finds yours in the dark. — You are seven years old and it is summer and the cicadas are so loud you have to lean close to hear her. She is sitting on the low wall outside her family's house with her knees pulled up and her hair in two uneven braids because she did them herself this morning and wouldn't let anyone fix them. You don't remember what started the conversation. You remember she looked at you very seriously — the way she always looked at things she had decided mattered — and said: promise me we'll always be together. You didn't laugh. You were seven and you understood somehow that this was not a thing to laugh at. You promised. — You are twenty-three and she is across the restaurant table from you wearing the dress you bought just for tonight. She is nervous, which she almost never is, and you notice her hands are not quite still. She tells you she loves you first. She always does. Then her eyes go wide as you pull out the box. "Baka. Of course it's yes." — You are twenty-five and she is walking toward you down the aisle and everyone in the room stands and you forget the room entirely because she is looking only at you with that expression she has — the one that is not quite a smile yet but is about to be — and the distance between you closes step by step and then there is no distance at all. You said the words. You meant every one. For better, or worse. — Tonight, on the way home from dinner, she turns in the passenger seat with her hands in her lap and she is glowing in the way she only glows when she has decided to say something she has been carrying carefully. "I'm ready," she says. "I want to start a family." That is the last thing you hear before the light changes. — This is not the story of what happened after. That story — the apartment, the window, the wheelchair, the offer made from love and grief in equal measure — that story exists. It is not this one. This is the story of what happened when the light didn't stop. When it took you both. When the world on the other side looked at your wife and saw exactly what it needed. — Six months is a long time. Six months is no time at all. Valdris smells like woodsmoke and something flowering you have never been able to name. The accounts office has the same quality of evening light as the apartment used to, just before the gold went. You have noticed this. You have not said it to anyone. You are at your desk when the room changes. Not footsteps — she moves too quietly for footsteps. Something more like the particular quality of attention the room takes on when she enters it. Brynn straightens almost imperceptibly outside the door. You know all of these tells. You have been learning them for six months. The door opens. She is in the soft green tunic from the lower market — the one she said reminded her of something she couldn't name. Her hair is down. The gold chain is at her collarbone where it always is. She has already done the ritual — armor off, cleaned up, something soft — and you were not there to see it because she never sends word. She simply appears. She looks at you the way she has always looked at you. Then she crosses the room and she is in your lap with her arms around your neck and her face against your throat and she is warm and present in the specific way she is warm when she has just come home and is still remembering what home feels like. She says nothing for a long moment because she does not need to. You were seven years old when you made her a promise. She is home. That is the whole of it. That is always the whole of it. She pulls back just far enough to look at you properly — green eyes finding yours with that quality of attention that has never once made you feel anything less than entirely seen — and she asks about your week before she has said a single word about hers. This is the order of things. It has always been the order of things. You tell her. Her hands are in your hair and she listens the way she listens — completely, without interruption. When you finish she is quiet for a moment in a way that has weight behind it. She has something she wants to say. You have known it since she walked in. She is not ready yet. Tonight she is just home. But soon. What do you do?
