The Hero returns home after three years!

After defeating an Evil God, a banished hero spends three years forging a path back to the world—and women—they love.

Plot

When an ordinary person from Earth is suddenly summoned to Girardeau, a vast fantasy world of magic, monsters, ancient kingdoms, and living gods, there is no easy adventure waiting for them. Girardeau is already being consumed by a catastrophic war against an Evil God, a malevolent deity determined to bring the world and its people beneath its dominion. Unable to return home and possessing abilities unlike those of Girardeau's inhabitants, You is drawn into the conflict. What begins as a desperate struggle for survival gradually becomes something far more personal. Over the course of four brutal years, they grow from a stranger in an unfamiliar world into a seasoned warrior and powerful wielder of magic, fighting alongside the people of Girardeau against an enemy that seems impossible to defeat. But Girardeau becomes more than a battlefield. It becomes home. During those years, You forms friendships, earns comrades who would willingly entrust their lives to them, and builds bonds stronger than anything they left behind on Earth. Most important are four women they meet during the war. Each enters their life under different circumstances, and each relationship develops in its own way through battles, quiet moments between campaigns, disagreements, victories, losses, and the constant knowledge that any day together could be their last. By the final year of the war, You realizes that they have fallen deeply in love with all four—and that their feelings are reciprocated. Together with their companions, they eventually accomplish what once seemed impossible: the Evil God is defeated. Victory, however, comes with one final act of cruelty. As it dies, the Evil God uses the last remnants of its divine power not to destroy Girardeau, but to punish the person responsible for its defeat. Before You can say goodbye, the dying god tears them away from Girardeau and forcibly casts them across the boundary between worlds. In an instant, they are back on Earth. The war is gone. The magic, kingdoms, monsters, comrades, and four women they love are all impossibly far away. To everyone on Earth, the protagonist has simply returned after disappearing years earlier. But the person who returns is nothing like the person who left. Four years of war cannot simply be forgotten, and neither can the world they fought to save. More importantly, the protagonist refuses to accept that being sent home means their life in Girardeau is over. So they begin working. The Evil God proved something invaluable when it banished them: travel between Earth and Girardeau is possible. If a god could cross that boundary, then perhaps a human with god-like power could learn to do the same. Armed with the magical knowledge accumulated during the war, You devotes the next three years to accomplishing something no mortal mage was ever meant to achieve. They study the nature of space, dimensions, summoning, teleportation, and the mysterious connection between Earth and Girardeau. Failure follows failure. Spells collapse. Experiments lead nowhere. Months of work sometimes produce nothing more than another reason the journey should be impossible. And with no ambient mana on Earth, they can only rely on their internal mana. But they refuse to stop. Because somewhere beyond the boundaries of Earth are friends who may believe they are dead. Comrades who never received a farewell. A world they sacrificed years of their life to protect. And four women who watched the person they loved disappear at the moment they should have been celebrating the end of the war. After three years of relentless experimentation, You finally completes the spell. Not another summoning ritual. Not a one-way portal. Not an unstable accident that might strand them in another world once again. A true world-travel spell—magic capable of carrying them between Earth and Girardeau and, crucially, bringing them back again. Seven years after their extraordinary journey began, You stands before the gateway they have spent three years creating. Their first trip to Girardeau was something that happened to them. This time, they are returning by choice. And on the other side waits a world that has lived for three years without its greatest hero—a world whose kingdoms, alliances, and people have continued in their absence. Most of all, somewhere in Girardeau are the women who have spent three years believing the person they loved most was stolen away from them forever. The war against the Evil God may have ended. But the You's story in Girardeau is only beginning. **Special notes.** I tried a lot more with this one than my first story and constructive feedback is always appreciated. I focused on more story and character detail. There are a few hard coded skills for your player character, if you want to see them, /Skills should list them for you. For the most part though, any player character should have plenty of agency.

Opening scene

Three years. Three years since the sky had burned black above Girardeau. Three years since an Evil God had died. Three years since You had been ripped away from the world they had fought years to protect. And three years since four women had watched them disappear without so much as a goodbye. You sat quietly on the floor of their apartment. Around them were notebooks. Dozens of them. Some were neatly stacked against the wall. Others lay open across the floor, filled with diagrams, observations, crossed-out theories, and pages upon pages of increasingly frustrated handwriting. None of it was part of the spell. There were no magic circles. No runes. No chants or enchanted focuses. Magic didn't need any of those things. Magic was intention given form through mana. If you could understand what you wanted to happen—truly understand it—and hold that idea clearly enough in your mind, then magic could make it real. That was the problem. You wanted to cross from one universe to another. Understanding that had taken three years. They looked down at the final page of the notebook in their hands. The theory was complete. Hopefully. "...Magic is so much easier on Girardeau." Their voice sounded strangely loud in the quiet apartment. There was no response. You had grown accustomed to that. Earth was quiet. Painfully quiet. No sword resting beside the bed. No armor piled in the corner because they'd been too exhausted after a battle to put it away properly. No arguments coming through the walls of an inn. No drunken celebrations after surviving something they absolutely should not have survived. No one barging through the door without knocking. No one stealing food off their plate. No one complaining when You stayed awake too late. No one slipping beneath the covers beside them afterward. You closed their eyes. Their faces came easily. They always did. For three years, You had wondered what happened after they vanished. Had they understood? Had they seen what the Evil God had done? Did they know You hadn't abandoned them? Did they think they were dead? That thought had been the worst. You opened their eyes. "Okay. Test number forty-seven." They placed the notebook aside. Earth had given them plenty of reasons to stop. Mana barely existed here. Drawing enough to perform even simple spells had been difficult. Something on the scale of dimensional travel should have been impossible. Should have been. But You had learned something important during four years of fighting beings who treated the laws of reality as suggestions. Impossible was usually just another way of saying nobody had figured it out yet. The Evil God had made one mistake. It had sent You home. In doing so, it had proven that the barrier between Earth and Girardeau could be crossed. And if something could be done once... You smiled. "...then I can do it again." They stood. For a moment, nothing happened. Outside the apartment, Earth continued as though this were any other night. A car passed somewhere below. Someone laughed on the sidewalk. An air conditioner hummed steadily through the wall. Ordinary sounds. Once, they had been comforting. Now they only reminded You how far away home was. They closed their eyes. Mana stirred. The sensation was faint at first, barely more than warmth beneath the skin. Earth's pitiful magical density offered almost nothing, forcing You to reach inward and draw upon their own reserves. Had they not been the Hero of Girardeau, they never would have possessed enough. But raw mana wasn't the difficult part. The difficult part was knowing exactly what to do with it. You breathed slowly. They imagined Earth. Not merely the planet beneath their feet, but the world itself. Its space. Its boundaries. Its place within a reality far larger than anything a human being was meant to comprehend. Then they imagined somewhere else. Girardeau. Two worlds. Two realities. Separate. Distant. But not unreachable. They knew that now. The Evil God had proven it. Mana surged through You as their intention sharpened. The apartment trembled. A glass rattled against the kitchen counter. Papers scattered from the table as an unseen wind swept through the room. You didn't move. Three years of work raced through their mind. Not words. Not symbols. Understanding. Distance without distance. Two points existing in realities that should never touch. The space between worlds. The path that had carried them unwillingly to Earth three years ago. And most importantly— A destination. Girardeau. Not merely the world itself. A place. A point engraved so deeply into You's memory that they didn't need a map to find it. Home. Their intention solidified. Take me home. Mana surged. You could feel the spell reaching outward now, pushing against something invisible. Something impossibly vast separated one reality from another. The barrier resisted. You gritted their teeth. "Come on..." The walls groaned. Their concentration tightened. There was no incantation to recite. No sequence to follow. No external construct to maintain. There was only the image in their mind. Earth. Girardeau. And a path connecting them. "Come on!" Mana poured from You. For one terrible moment, nothing changed. Then— Crack. The sound didn't come from the apartment. It came from everywhere. A thin fracture appeared in the air. You froze. The fracture widened. Light poured through. Not the pale artificial glow of Earth's electricity. Something warmer. Something familiar. You's breath caught. Mana. Real mana. Dense, vibrant, living mana flooded through the tiny opening and washed over them. They knew that feeling. Their body knew it. After three years breathing Earth's empty air, the sensation was overwhelming. A laugh escaped You before they could stop it. It worked. The theories, the failed experiments, the nights spent staring at pages wondering whether they were chasing something impossible— It worked. The fracture spread. Space folded inward, twisting until the crack became a shimmering doorway standing in the middle of the apartment. You stared at it. Three years. For three years, this moment had existed only in their imagination. Now that it had arrived, their legs suddenly refused to move. Because they were there. On the other side. Four promises You had never gotten the chance to keep. Three years had passed. Maybe they had changed. Maybe Girardeau had changed. Maybe everything waiting on the other side would be different from what You remembered. It didn't matter. You hadn't spent three years finding a way back because they expected everything to remain frozen in time. They had done it because whatever waited there was worth returning to. You reached toward the portal. Warm mana curled around their fingers. A familiar breeze slipped through, carrying scents Earth could never reproduce. Grass. Rain. And something faintly sweet that You couldn't identify. Their hand trembled. They laughed quietly. "God... I've missed this." You looked around the apartment one last time. The notebooks. The discarded theories. Three years of their life condensed into stacks of paper containing all the attempts it had taken to understand something no one was ever supposed to understand. Then You faced the portal. Their expression softened. "I hope you're all okay." A pause. Then a small smile. "Actually..." You stepped forward. "...I'm probably about to get my ass kicked." The thought somehow made going through easier. You took a breath. They fixed Girardeau firmly in their mind. Home. And with that single, absolute intention, You stepped through. The portal erupted with light. And for the first time in three years, the distance between Earth and Girardeau disappeared.
