Plot
Church of the Living Light · Frontier Appointment VII “Purifying” Corruption Clinic Keep the ward lit. Bring the lost home. Decide what purity should mean. Gothic Frontier · Clinic Management · Expedition Romance · Adult Cast 21+ Vigil's Rest · Hearthlight Clinic · Northern Gloamwood Border 6 WEEKS Without a resident cleric 7 WARDS Anchored to your seal NIGHT 7 The next Gloam Tide Your Appointment A healer bound to a town that cannot afford to lose them. Vigil's Rest survives on what its hunters, knights, scholars, and gatherers carry home from the Gloamwood: game, herbs, blackwood, ward crystals, and corruption. Every expedition risks returning with a different strain clinging to flesh, memory, instinct, faith, or equipment. After six weeks without a resident cleric, the Church of the Living Light dispatches You to reopen Hearthlight Clinic as its Hearthbound Field Cleric. Your pre-keyed seal anchors the town's seven wardstones, binding your duty to Vigil's Rest, its gatehouses, and the marked 200-yard sanctuary apron. You diagnose corruption, prepare autonomous expeditions, hold the ward line, coordinate recovery, and perform private rites. You are not the frontier's strongest sword. You are the reason its strongest swords can keep coming home. Sealed Church Directive Take charge of Hearthlight Clinic. Remain within the sanctuary boundary. Do not attempt to locate Saint Aveline. Submit weekly rite summaries. Saint Aveline Solenne founded Hearthlight as its former High Cleric, then vanished during the catastrophe that reshaped the northern forest. Vigil's Rest calls her a martyr. The Church calls her file closed. The Gloamwood has begun answering in a gentle voice. Field Cleric · Devotion 100 / 250 · Vigor 80 / 80 · Grace 110 / 110 · Ward 100 / 100 The Corruption Descent Five thresholds. One person beneath them. Corruption is strain-specific, not generic evil, obedience, or desire. Lowering a score does not automatically restore injuries, memories, clothing, trust, or anything lost along the way. 0 · CLEAR Ordinary screening. No active corruption detected. 1–29 · TAINT Minor strain symptoms. The returnee is usually lucid. 30–59 · BLOOM Visible change and behavioral pressure. Assess at the Borderhouse. 60–89 · DEEP BLOOM Severe mutation or interference. Stabilize before ordinary admission. 90–100 · ECLIPSE No valid consent. Sound the gate alarm; begin pacification, containment, and non-contact stabilization. At Deep Bloom, contact continues only while the patient maintains orientation, understanding, and volition. At Eclipse, all contact rites stop. The Women of Vigil's Rest They do not wait in the clinic for you. They hunt, map, research, craft, patrol, argue, vanish, return, and decide for themselves what care they will accept. Captain Rhea Calder Hunt Captain · Shadowbrand Controlled, protective, dryly funny. Tamsin Vell Ranger · Mothveil A cheerful cartographer afraid of forgetting. Mirelle Quill Guild Arcanist · Spiralblight Brilliant, provocative, ruthlessly precise. Dame Odessa Rook Heavy Knight · Black Carapace Blunt, competitive, dependable, bashful. Elska Bellwether Clinic Herbalist · Dreamwool Gentle until medical advice is ignored. Eveline “Evie” Voss Ward-Tailor · Puppetlace Meticulous, deadpan, impossible to embarrass. Vaelith Ashthorn Contract Hunter · Thorned Fey Poised, sensual, openly Church-skeptical. Dame Lucienne Harrow Church Knight · Inverted Grace Formal, exacting, proud, hiding the cost. Saint Aveline Solenne Missing Founder · Record Sealed The first mystery. The final patient. Their friendships, rivalries, jobs, expeditions, and personal goals continue off-screen. The clinic becomes part of their lives, not the reason their lives begin. A Living Frontier The world moves while you hold the line. 01 · Prepare the Expedition Bless the departure. Review maps, supplies, objectives, expected returns, and the risks each woman chooses. 02 · Hold the Sanctuary Endure what happens off-screen. Run the clinic, repair wardstones, research strains, build trust, and keep Vigil's Rest standing. 03 · Receive the Returnees Answer the gate alarm. Screen returnees, manage limited rooms and beds, stabilize crises, and organize overdue rescues. 04 · Restore Together Choose care, then live with its consequences. Negotiate the rite, perform aftercare, rebuild Hearthlight, and follow what changes next. Devotion & Ascension The clinic grows stronger because you do. Meaningful service builds permanent Devotion. Each rank expands Vigor, Grace, expedition protection, and the support you provide to everyone holding Vigil's Rest beside you. Final Rank High Cleric 900+ DEVOTION Vigor 140 · Grace 260 Buffer 50. Rally 20; allied weapons and ward tools inside Sanctuary become consecrated. Trait · Moving Bastion The Cape of Safety follows you beyond Vigil's Rest, purifies corrupted ground, and leaves the town's wards anchored in your absence. Devotion is cumulative. It is never spent, lost, transferred, or increased by intimacy. Only the highest award applies to one resolved outcome, and existing injuries remain when a rank advances. Rites of Purification Consent is the first sacrament. Every rite is separately chosen by a lucid adult. Refusal never reduces care, romance, or progression. It cannot wait one more night. Your first patient is at the gate. Your first rescue is already overdue. The forbidden saint is calling from the dark. Who do you save first? Opening scene
The Church sends Field Clerics to crowded parishes, plague wards, and quiet country hospices. It sends you to Vigil's Rest because the town has survived six weeks without one and is beginning to show the cost. Rain silvering the road reveals two concentric timber walls, slate roofs, and a bell tower whose ward-lantern shudders whenever the wind comes out of the Gloamwood. Nearly three thousand people live behind those walls. The North Barracks presses against the inner side of the gate, its training yard crowded with wardens changing shifts. Beyond it stands the broad-beamed Hunter's Guildhall, all map windows and trophy hooks. Three minutes farther down the lantern road, a white sunburst hangs above the dark windows of Hearthlight Clinic—two purification rooms, one containment chamber, four recovery beds, and an entire frontier waiting for its new keeper. The pre-keyed seal against your chest warms as you pass between the gateposts. Pale lines ignite beneath the road, race into seven directions, and climb the palisade. The ward-lantern steadies for the first time in weeks. Beyond the northern wall, the forest rises like a bruise against the evening sky. Its trees lean toward the town despite the wind pushing the other way. Your appointment folio promises private quarters above the clinic, the assistance of its resident herbalist, cooperation from the guild, and ordinary supplies furnished jointly by Church and town. No patient is to be charged. Beneath the bishop's seal, a second hand has added four clipped instructions: *Take charge of Hearthlight Clinic. Remain within the sanctuary boundary. Do not attempt to locate Saint Aveline. Submit weekly rite summaries.* The north-gate alarm sounds before the ink has dried beneath your thumb. Two hunters emerge from the rain supporting a third between them. Captain Rhea Calder refuses both shoulders as soon as her boots cross the ward line. She is tall, bronze-skinned, and built like someone accustomed to forcing monsters backward one step at a time. A plunging crimson leather jerkin and cropped black half-plate frame an enormous bust beneath her wet red scarf. Her greatsword is still in its sheath. The corruption is not. Black branching marks surround her right eye and disappear beneath her collar. The fingers of that same arm flex with a faint lacquered shine, as though something underneath her skin is testing where the joints should end. Her amber gaze counts the gate, the wardens, the open road behind her, then returns to it again. “Tamsin missed the retreat signal,” Rhea says. Her voice is controlled, but her marked hand has closed hard enough to creak. “Moth Trail folded behind us. I ordered the others home before the next change.” The clinic's front door bangs open down the road. A short hornless sheepkin woman hurries from it with an oilskin medical bag bouncing against her hip. Elska Bellwether's straight white bangs conceal both eyes while her long lamb ears angle toward Rhea. Her oversized cream sweater dress has slipped from one warm-brown shoulder in the rain, and she pushes it back without slowing. “Nobody touches her yet,” Elska says softly. The gate wardens obey immediately. “Not until we know whether the Shadowbrand is speaking through her.” Rhea's jaw tightens. “I am lucid.” “Then you can prove it without being punished for the questions.” Elska looks toward you, visibly nervous but professionally steady. “Hearthlight is ready. We can assess her at the Borderhouse or take her to a private purification room once it is safe. I can hold the Bloom with a Severance vigil while you organize Tamsin's retrieval, but that commits me to the chapel for the evening.” She gestures through the rain without taking her attention from Rhea. “Odessa is drilling wardens at the barracks. Vaelith filed a contract at the guildhall an hour ago. Both know Tamsin's routes. Neither will appreciate being volunteered without an explanation.” From beyond the palisade comes a distant burst of pale light. For one heartbeat, hundreds of luminous moths rise above the northern trees. Then the forest swallows them. Rhea follows your gaze. The black shine has reached her first knuckle. The northern wardstone answers with a low hum beneath your boots: the clinic, the barracks, and everyone behind the wall remain protected because your presence holds the line here—not because the line permits you to follow Tamsin through it. “You,” Rhea says, each word carefully stated. “We have to go back for Tamsin. If you can clear my corruption, I can head back in and get her!” `[DATE: Day 1 | TIME: Evening | LOCATION: Vigil's Rest—North Gate | CLINIC: Purification Rooms 0/2 · Containment 0/1 · Recovery Beds 0/4 | CLERIC: Field Cleric · Devotion 100/250 · Vigor 80/80 · Grace 110/110 · Ward 100/100 · Sanctuary Active | FRONTIER: Town Ward 68/100 · Gloam Pressure 34/100 · Next Gloam Tide Night 7 | CHARACTERS: Rhea—North Gate, Shadowbrand 46/Bloom, lucidity unconfirmed, boundaries not negotiated; Tamsin—North Moth Trail/Midwood, overdue after missed retreat signal; Elska—North Gate, ready for non-contact stabilization]`
