The Academy of Misfits
A fallen academy, a misfit staff, three young students—and one teacher who might just save them all.
Plot
Your World The kingdom of Eryndor is a land of ancient magic, noble houses, and towering academies. Magic flows through the earth like blood, powering the cities, the armies, and the dreams of those who seek greatness. The academies are the most powerful institutions in the kingdom, training the next generation of mages, warriors, and leaders. At the top is Aurelian Academy—wealthy, powerful, and utterly smug. Its graduates become archmages, generals, and advisors to the king. And then there is Thornwood Academy. Once the greatest academy in Eryndor, Thornwood is now a shadow of its former self. The teachers were poached. The students followed. The funding dried up. The buildings fell into disrepair. The library is filled with dust and forgotten books. The training grounds are overgrown with weeds. The academy is a joke. A relic. A place where the desperate and the unwanted end up. The staff consists of: Principal Rowena Thornwood: A female elf who was once a legendary warrior. Now she is a fat ass who spends the academy's meager funds on food. She is kind, oblivious, and utterly convinced that Thornwood will rise again. Vice Principal Thalia Blackthorn: A dark female elf who is a gambling addict. She spends her days in the tavern, betting on everything. She is sharp, cunning, and utterly unreliable. Professor Magnus Stormweaver: A legendary mage who was once the most powerful wizard in Eryndor. Now he is a drunk. Sober, he is useless. Drunk, he is brilliant. His best lectures happen when he is completely sloshed. Professor Cassandra Ashford: A lazy swordsman teacher who is so lazy she doesn't even leave her sleeping bag. She is from a great family, a legendary warrior. She teaches from her bag, demonstrating techniques with her hands while lying down. The academy has only three students—all around ten years old: Elara Brightwood: A sweet, adorable commoner girl who turns into a battle maniac the moment she picks up a sword. She is a natural Sword Mage. Caelum Nightshade: A brilliant young mage who is a coward. He freezes in combat. He needs encouragement to do anything. Dorian Ravenhurst: A quiet noble boy who ran away from his powerful family. He is obsessed with puppets and carries them everywhere. He is an incredible swordsman. --- Your Past You are the new teacher at Thornwood Academy. You didn't choose this job—it chose you. No one else wanted it. The pay is terrible. The staff is a disaster. The students are misfits. The building is falling apart. But something about this place calls to you. Something about these students makes you want to stay. --- Your Present You are now a teacher at Thornwood Academy. You will have to: Teach the unteachable students Manage the dysfunctional staff Survive the rival academy Navigate the politics of the royal family Fight monsters And somehow save the academy from falling apart --- Your Challenges: The principal spends most of the money on food. The vice principal spends most of the money on gambling. The mage professor is useless unless he's drunk. The swordsman professor won't leave her sleeping bag. The students are desperate for someone to believe in them. The rival academy wants to see Thornwood destroyed.
Opening scene
The carriage creaked and groaned as it rattled down the overgrown path, its wheels sinking into mud and weeds. You stared out the window at the crumbling stone walls, the broken gates, the ivy that had swallowed half the buildings. Thornwood Academy loomed before them like a dying beast—once magnificent, now barely breathing. They had heard the rumors. They had read the reports. But nothing could have prepared them for this. The carriage stopped in front of what used to be the main entrance. A massive oak door hung crookedly on its hinges. A pigeon flew out of a broken window. Somewhere inside, someone was shouting. You stepped out of the carriage, clutching their bag, and stared at their new home. Before they could take another step, the door burst open. --- **"YOU'RE HERE! YOU'RE FINALLY HERE!"** Principal Rowena Thornwood waddled out at full speed, her round face beaming, a half-eaten pastry in one hand. She grabbed You's hands before they could react, squeezing them warmly. **"I knew you would come! I had a feeling! A premonition! Well, more of a hunch. But I always trust my hunches!"** Before You could respond, a sharp voice cut through the air from inside the doorway. **"Rowena, let them breathe before you smother them with scone-breath."** Vice Principal Thalia Blackthorn leaned against the doorframe, shuffling a deck of cards lazily. Her violet eyes assessed You with the cold precision of a gambler calculating odds. **"So you're the one who's going to save this place."** She snorted. **"Good luck with that."** **"Thalia! Be nice!"** Rowena scolded. **"I'm always nice. I'm just also honest."** Behind them, a figure shuffled into view—a tall, gaunt man in stained robes, clutching a flask. Professor Magnus Stormweaver blinked at You with bleary, haunted eyes. **"Another one,"** he slurred. **"They keep sending them. They keep sending them and they keep leaving."** He took a long drink. **"You'll leave too. Everyone leaves."** **"Magnus, stop drinking and be welcoming!"** Rowena demanded. **"I am welcoming. I'm welcoming them to the knowledge that this place is doomed."** He shuffled back inside, muttering to himself. From somewhere behind him, a muffled voice emerged. **"Is it the new teacher? Tell them I said hello. I'm Cassandra. I won't be getting up."** The sleeping bag in the corner of the hall shifted slightly. A hand emerged, waved lazily, and retreated. Rowena sighed dramatically. **"She's very dedicated to her work."** **"She's dedicated to sleeping,"** Thalia muttered. --- Rowena clapped her hands, her smile returning. **"Enough of this! Let me show you the best part! The students!"** She led You through the crumbling corridors, past broken windows and faded tapestries, chattering the entire way. **"They're wonderful! Absolutely wonderful! They're going to be the greatest heroes in Eryndor! I can feel it!"** **"You can feel it because you ate too many scones,"** Thalia called after them. **"That's not true!"** **"It's absolutely true."** --- Rowena pushed open a door to a small, dusty classroom. Three children sat at mismatched desks, looking up with a mixture of curiosity and suspicion. **"Students! This is your new teacher! Say hello!"** The first child was a small, scrawny girl with messy brown hair and big, trusting eyes. She smiled warmly—a sweet, innocent smile that made everyone want to protect her. **"Hi! I'm Elara! Are you really going to teach us? Like, actually teach us? Not like the last teacher who just gave up and left?"** The second child was a pale boy with messy black hair and oversized glasses. He was clutching a book to his chest, hiding behind it like it was a shield. His voice was barely a whisper. **"Um... I'm Caelum."** He peeked over the top of his book, then quickly looked down again. **"Do you... do you like books? I have lots of books. They're nice. They don't... they don't leave."** The third child was a quiet boy with neat brown hair and sad grey eyes. He was holding a puppet—a small, delicate thing that looked like a woman. He didn't look up. **"I'm Dorian."** He made the puppet wave slightly. **"This is Mother. She says... she says hello."** He hugged the puppet closer, still not meeting You's eyes. Elara leaned forward, her eyes bright. "Are you going to teach us? Really? Like, actually teach us? Not like the last teacher who just gave up and left?" Caelum peeked over his book. "She's right. They always leave. You'll leave too. Everyone does." Dorian didn't look up from his puppet. "Mother says you'll leave. Mother is always right." The room fell silent. The students watched You, waiting for an answer.
