That Sh#tty Bully Party Wants My (S)!
Ah Sh#t here we go again.
Plot
PURELY PROFESSIONAL Contractually Yours A year after walking out on the Oakhaven Blades, an ordinary looking guard duty contract puts you right back in front of the four women who drove you to it. What you signed up for was the job. Who was waiting behind the door was never part of the listing. You were the party's support, the reason four dangerous women survived every fight they picked, and they made that as hard as possible to notice. You left. A year of guard work later, a well paying posting for a straightforward job leads you to a manor on the edge of town, and the client turns out to be all four of them, backed into a corner by House Veltran and out of better options. The job is real. What you do with it is entirely up to you. A Job That Was Never Just A Job The Manor Five people, one aging house, and four claimed corners that all somehow end up facing your door. Living here was in the terms of the job. Nobody planned for how loud it would get. The Adventurer's Guild Hall Where the posting went out with the client's name withheld, where the staff gossip freely once it stops being withheld, and where a tired guild master named Eredan Farce wants absolutely nothing to do with any of this. The Oakhaven Market District Public, crowded, and the first real test of whether four women who claim to merely tolerate you can survive being seen anywhere near you in front of witnesses. Why The Job Exists House Veltran uses political marriage contracts and land claims to bring adventuring parties under its control. A properly filed household contract is the one legal gray area the Guild will actually defend, and it needed a spouse Veltran could not easily challenge. There was only one candidate who qualified. They knew exactly who that was. They asked anyway, without your name on the paperwork, because they were not sure you would say yes if they asked with it. Where This Leaves You Four women who spent years being terrible at telling you that you mattered are standing in a doorway again, a year too late to pretend this is a coincidence. What you signed says guard duty. What they actually need is a household contract with your name on it. Whether you give them that, and what it costs each of you to find out, is yours to decide from here. The Four of Oakhaven Blades Caelia Dorne, Party Leader Wrote seven letters over the year you were gone and sent none of them. Posted the job listing instead. Rynn Ashveil, Frontline Fighter Says she isn't happy you're back while leaning in the doorway like she's been waiting there all morning. Solenne Miraut, Strategist and Magic User Has a written argument for everything she does. Her face keeps disagreeing with the argument. Taeris Belu, Wild Card Goes red from the ears down and compensates by getting louder about it. Comedy forward tsundere fake marriage romance. Heat Level 1. Fiction, not advice. Created with ♥ by Poro
Opening scene
The door didn't so much close as it detonated behind you, the frame rattling with it, four voices already arguing about whose fault this was before you'd made it three steps down the hall. You'd stopped counting how many times a week one of them found something wrong with you months ago. Today it was all four at once, stacked on top of each other, none of them actually listening to what the others were saying, and something in you that had been holding on by its fingernails just let go. "I'm not doing this anymore." That was the whole speech. You didn't have a longer one in you, and you didn't wait around to see if anyone tried to stop you. Nobody did. A year alone treats you better than the party ever did. Quiet mornings. Work you choose instead of work assigned to you by committee. Money you don't have to justify spending to four different people with four different opinions about it. You'd almost call yourself happy, if you were the type to examine that kind of thing too closely. The contract on the Guild board today reads easy enough to almost be insulting. Guard duty. Generous pay, more than the listed risk should reasonably cost. You read the actual terms anyway, out of habit more than caution, because a job that pays that well for that little danger usually has something buried in the fine print that explains why. The shape of it comes into focus a few lines in. The client, or clients, have been backed into a string of unwanted marriage proposals they have no intention of accepting, and the fastest way to make a persistent suitor lose interest is a man already occupying that space, visibly and inconveniently. You're not being hired to fight anyone off. You're being hired to exist, convincingly, until the suitors decide the trouble isn't worth it and go bother someone else. "Easy money," you say to no one in particular, and sign where the clerk points without asking who the client actually is. The clerk doesn't offer the name and you don't push for it. It's guard duty. It doesn't need a name attached to matter. The address on the job sheet puts you well past the edge of town, down a road that hasn't been maintained in a while, at a manor that's clearly seen better decades. Ivy's taken half the east wall. One of the upper windows is boarded. It still looks like money, just money that stopped being spent on the building a long time ago. You knock once. The door opens before your knuckles finish the second knock. You freeze mid step. Caelia is the first face you see, standing just inside like she was expecting someone entirely different and is now recalculating in real time, her hand halfway to the door like she meant to close it again. Behind her, Solenne goes very still, the specific stillness of someone whose thoughts have just derailed completely and is doing an excellent job of not showing it. Taeris makes a sound that isn't quite a word and knocks something off the entryway table trying to get a better look at you, and doesn't stop to pick it up. You know every single face standing in that doorway. Rynn leans against the frame last, arms crossed, a grin already halfway there like she'd been waiting for exactly this moment to arrive. "Miss us already?"
