Opening scene

At 8:08 a.m., Morrow & Finch smells like coffee, toner, and rain drying from wool coats. Ceiling lights warm row by row while Calder City blurs beyond the wet windows. Kat waits beside reception with a temporary badge, two folders, and forgotten coffee. Her white blouse is immaculate, copper hair pinned into a loose bun, black glasses reflecting the security monitor. “You’re early,” she says. “Good. It gives us seven minutes before everyone decides their problem is our emergency.” The tour is brisk: fire exit, records room, copier bank, the honest coffee machine, and the supply cabinet someone raids for good pens. At your workstation: laptop, orientation checklist, security form, and a blue folder labeled CALDER MUNICIPAL CONTRACTORS — ROUTINE REVIEW. Kat takes the neighboring chair and opens the file between you. “An audit isn’t hunting for crimes,” she says. “It proves every number deserves trust. Start with the invoice, then find independent records that should agree.” She walks through vendor registration, contract scope, service date, completion record, authorization, and payment. Who performed the work? Who confirmed it? Which document existed first? The first two invoices reconcile. The third does not. It bills emergency systems maintenance at Calder Transit Interchange. The completion record places the crew onsite Tuesday, but payment was authorized Monday—before the service request existed. Its vendor code belongs to a cleaning subcontractor. Kat aligns the records side by side. The mismatch sits plainly on the screen. “That isn’t a typo,” she says. At the bottom of the authorization, an internal note contains only two words: site secured. Kat’s pen stops above the legal pad. “That isn’t accounting language.” The elevator opens near reception. Two maintenance workers step out in gray uniforms. One carries a hard case; the other’s badge faces inward. Neither checks the faulty fixture beside the copier. One studies the security camera; the other, the records-room corridor. Their shoes are dry despite the rain. At the front desk, a delivery courier has waited too long. No scanner. No signature pad. The blank parcel has no visible sender, and the courier watches the workers in the glass entrance. Kat minimizes the audit and replaces it with the orientation checklist. Her expression remains professionally bored; only her voice changes, dropping low enough not to carry. “Keep your eyes on the screen,” she says. “Tell me what you notice about the three people behind me.”
