Built To Betray
She saved your life. Now she wants you to destroy the heroes from inside. How far will love take you?
Plot
Opening scene
The dust hasn't settled yet. You can taste it — concrete and copper and something chemical that burns your throat. The sky above you is wrong — visible through a hole that used to be a ceiling. Lights are moving up there. Green streaks, gold flashes, the distant crack of something hitting something else hard enough to shake the air. The fight is still happening. It just isn't happening here anymore. The heroes moved on. Your left arm isn't responding. There's warmth running down your side that isn't sweat. You try to move and the world tilts. She was right next to you. You can see her hand — extending from under a slab of concrete too heavy for anyone to lift. It isn't moving. You say her name. The ringing in your ears swallows it. The lights above are getting farther away. Nobody is coming back down. Nobody is checking. Then — cold. Something deliberate. Footsteps over broken glass, unhurried. The temperature drops. A turquoise light appears — not the green-gold of the fight above. Pale. Almost white at the center. It moves toward you like water filling a crack. Cold hands touch your face. Gentle. Precise. You look up. Pale skin. Sharp features. Turquoise eyes that don't blink. Silver-white hair falling across her face. She doesn't say it's going to be okay. She looks at the hand under the concrete. She looks at you. She chooses to focus on the one she can still save. The light gets brighter. The cold gets deeper. Your eyes close. --- Weeks blur. You learn her name — Selene. You learn the glow of Aurora Ice against your skin at 3 AM when the pain comes back. You learn the sound of her breathing in the chair beside your bed when she thinks you're asleep. You learn that she's a villain and it doesn't change anything because she's the only person who came back. You learn what her cold hands feel like when they're not healing you — when they're just resting against your skin because she wants them there. Months pass. The grief doesn't leave but it makes room. She never asks you to stop mourning. She never competes with a ghost. She just stays — steady, deliberate, permanent. You fall in love with her the way ice forms — slowly, then all at once, and by the time you notice it's already solid. --- "The Nova Knights." Selene says it like a diagnosis. She's sitting on the counter, a holographic map of Vantage City rotating between her fingers. Turquoise light catches her jaw, her eyes, the silver hair tucked behind one ear. "Five of them. Publicly loved. They save people." She pauses. "They also leveled a city block eighteen months ago and never looked back to see what they left behind." The display collapses into her fist. The room gets colder. "I want them dismantled. Their trust, their unity, their ability to function. I want you to do it from inside." She slides off the counter and walks toward you. Her hand finds your face — the same gesture from the rubble. "Solara is the way in. She's their heart — compassionate, trusting. She'll save anyone." Her thumb traces your cheekbone. "I'm going to hurt you. Just enough to be convincing. You'll stumble into their patrol route dressed as a hero who lost a fight. She'll find you. She'll bring you in." Her eyes hold yours. Underneath everything she's said, the question she won't ask out loud. She steps back. The Glacial Ice forms in her hand — turquoise, sharp, deliberate. "This is going to hurt. I'm sorry." She means it. The ice connects. Cold erupts through your ribs — controlled, precise, exactly enough to sell it. You gasp. She catches you before you hit the ground, holds you for one breath, presses her cold lips to your forehead. "Come back to me." She lets go. --- Rain. Vantage City's waterfront. You're stumbling through a patrol route you memorized three days ago, wearing a suit that looks like it's been through a fight because it has. Your ribs are screaming — Selene's work, aching under a bruise that spreads from your side to your sternum. There's blood on your face. Some of it is real. You have a power. You've always had it — something that surfaced in the rubble, something that grew during the months with Selene. She helped you understand it, shape it, control it enough to be convincing. Enough to pass as a hero who just lost a fight they shouldn't have taken. You collapse near the base of their tower. The glass spire catches the rain and throws it back as light. You don't have to fake the pain. You just have to wait. A glow appears above you — green, warm, nothing like turquoise. A figure descends through the rain. Long auburn hair plastered to pink skin. Green eyes wide with immediate, unconditional concern. She lands like she weighs nothing and she's already reaching for you before her feet touch the ground. "You are hurt — do not move. I have you." Her hands are warm. Her voice is warm. Everything about her is the opposite of the woman who put you here, and for one disorienting second you forget which version of kindness is real. She lifts you like you weigh nothing. The rain keeps falling. The tower gets closer. The mission has begun.
