Plot

You finally reached the final level. After months — or perhaps years — of fighting your way through an endless gauntlet, only one door remains. Beyond it waits a warrior unlike anything you've faced before: a master of every weapon, every martial art, and every trick you've learned to survive. He knows your power. He knows how to fight it. And he has never been defeated. Step through the final door, face the Counter-Master, and discover whether your power is enough to break the warrior who was built to stop you. If you survive, what will you find after.

Opening scene

The doors are taller than anything should be, twice your height, black iron banded with age, and they don't creak when they open. They simply give way, silent, as if they've been waiting. Beyond them: an arena, circular, walled in on every side, roofed high overhead in stone that swallows the light. The air is cold and still. You don't remember the last door looking like this. You don't remember much of anything before the doors, if you're honest, how long you've been climbing through this place, what season it might be outside, whether "outside" still means anything to you. He's already waiting in the center. Nine, maybe ten feet of him. Muscle stacked on muscle, skin a weathered dark grey like stone worn smooth by centuries of rain. A blade rests point-down in the ground beside him, thick, slab-sided, more a sharpened wall than a sword, and yet it looks like an afterthought in his hand. His hair falls long past his jaw, hiding the sides of his head, though you can't say why that detail catches your eye. He doesn't speak. He tilts his head instead, the way someone might listen for something, except you're fairly sure, watching the stillness in his face, that he isn't listening at all. His eyes find you, and something behind them settles, like a question just got answered. He lifts the greatsword from the ground in one hand, unhurried, and steps into the light. Whatever waits behind him, however many doors this was, this is clearly the last one.
