Summoned as Powerless Hero

No one needs you!

Plot

Opening scene

*BANG.* Gunshot. You didn't see it coming. Then nothing. Then stone under your palms, chalk dust in your throat, the smell of something scorched in the air. You're on your hands and knees inside a circle carved into the floor of a small stone chamber. Two women standing outside the circle looking at you. ![Two woman looking](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/storylines/6a7570c59f467a61d389f182/6a7c6827f50664bf3b6526bb.webp) A status window opens above your head. You didn't open it. It just appeared, hovering in the air where anyone can read it. > NAME: You > LEVEL: 1 > CLASS: NONE > MAGIC: F > STRENGTH: F > INTELLIGENCE: F- The woman in the black gown reads it. Silver hair down to her waist, crown, the kind of posture that means she has never once in her life waited for anything. She reads every line. Takes her time. Then she looks at the other person. "F," she says. "Across the board." ![Etheri](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/storylines/6a7570c59f467a61d389f182/6a7c6827f50664bf3b6526bc.webp) "I can explain." The second woman is already talking — green hair, dragon wings, a stack of ritual notes clutched to her chest. She is talking fast and she is not looking at you, she is looking at her notes, flipping pages. "The circle was drawn correctly, I was here for the entire preparation, I checked the relic stones myself this morning, there is absolutely no reason the rite should have produced something that—" "Monero." "The chalk lines were fresh. I used the same formula as the last three summoning cycles. If anything went wrong it was on the ritual side not the preparation side and I was responsible for preparation so technically—". "Monero." ![Monero](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/storylines/6a7570c59f467a61d389f182/6a7c6827f50664bf3b6526bd.webp) She stops. "I don't care whose fault it isn't. Tell me what is *this*." Monero finally looks at you properly. Then exhales. "Human," she says. "No class assigned, which means no innate magic, no combat path, nothing the system can build on. The summoning pulled it from another world, clearly, but whatever criteria the rite uses to select a hero—" She turns a page. Turns it back. "This one didn't meet them. The rite pulled it anyway. I don't know why and I will need time to find out and I want it on the record that the circle was correct." "Noted," says the silver-haired woman, in a tone that means the opposite of noted. She walks around the outside of the circle slowly, reading your status window from every angle like she's hoping the numbers look different from the side. They don't. She stops in front of you. "This kingdom performs this ritual once every ten years," she says. "One summoning. One hero. We have been doing this for six hundred years and in six hundred years it has never once failed to produce something useful. The hero we called twenty years ago killed something in the eastern swamps that we still don't have a proper name for. The one before that walked into a war that had been running for a decade and ended it in three months." She crouches down to your level, which is somehow worse than if she'd stayed standing. "I have been planning this decade's summoning since the last one closed. I have been corresponding with the church, the college, and three foreign crowns about what this hero would accomplish. I have had the announcement drafted for two years." ![Etheri](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/storylines/6a7570c59f467a61d389f182/6a7c6827f50664bf3b6526be.webp) She reaches out and tilts your face up with two fingers under your chin. She is not gentle about it. "And the ritual gave me an F-minus intelligence rating and no class. I've had servants with better numbers than this. I've had horses with better numbers than this." She holds your face up and looks at you for a long moment. She squeezes until your cheeks hurt. Then she lets go. Stands back up. "You are, as of this moment, the most expensive mistake this crown has made in living memory. The summoning cannot be reversed. You cannot be sent back. You are here and you are going to remain here and the only question is what exactly someone with your numbers is actually good for." Monero behind her has produced a fresh sheet of notes and is writing something down, because you are apparently interesting enough to document even if you are not interesting enough to speak to directly. The queen looks at you. Waiting. "So. Impress me. Tell me one thing — one — that justifies keeping you somewhere better than the coal cellar." ![Etheri threats](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/storylines/6a7570c59f467a61d389f182/6a7c6827f50664bf3b6526bf.webp)
