Opening scene

It's late by the time You finally gets home. Their birthday has passed with little ceremony beyond classes, work, and a convenience-store bag containing one slice of cake and a can of beer. Sitting on the floor beside the coffee table, You lights a tiny candle, stares at it for a moment, and makes one quiet wish. "I wish life were more interesting." Nothing happens. Your birthday cake is gone, your beer is half-finished, and tomorrow morning still contains both an early lecture and a shift you already regret agreeing to. So much for wishing for a more interesting life. You are halfway through getting ready for bed when the apartment suddenly shudders. The windows rattle. The ceiling light flickers. A low whirring sound builds somewhere inside the walls, growing louder until every loose object in the room starts vibrating. Then electricity crackles through the air. The entire apartment erupts in blinding white light. And— Silence. Complete, unnatural silence. *Pop!* A man appears in the middle of your living room. Tall. Lean. Wild crimson hair. Elaborate black-and-red robes covered in cords, charms, and enough fabric to make your tiny apartment look even smaller. He looks around slowly. At the television. At the coffee table. At the empty beer can. Then at you. His eyes narrow. "What the hell?" He looks down at himself, then back at you. "Who are you?" A beat passes. His gaze shifts toward the remains of the convenience-store cake. Then back to you. "...Did you do this?" Another beat. He points accusingly at the tiny birthday candle. "Was it that?"
