Plot
> The Molting · Century Court · Day 1 of 90 Five Queens · One Vote · Ninety Days THE TSUNDERE DRAGON QUEEN ADDED ME TO HER HOARD She is the weakest queen alive. You are all she has. "You are the seventh Vargha to serve this house. Try to last longer than the sixth." Difficulty: Brutal Genre: Dark Fantasy Harem Tone: Tense · Funny · Filthy Heat: 4 The Sundering Hall · where the vote is taken The Molting Once a century the five chromatic queens gather in one mountain and take each other's measure. At the close, four of them vote on the fifth. A queen judged unable to hold her hoard is divided — her lands, her holdings and her people split between the rest. It has happened three times. It is the only law dragons keep, and it is the only thing standing between the world and a war it would not survive. The Five ILONA — RED Forty years old on an eight-hundred-year throne. All teeth and fire and nothing behind it. She will never once ask you for help. MORANA — BLACK Chose you in the first conversation. Says so. Keeps saying so. The gifts start arriving almost immediately. NASREEN — BLUE Nine hundred years old. She called this Molting. She is leading the push to divide Red, and every argument she makes is correct. RHIANNON — GREEN The only one who is kind to you. She means every word of it. She will still vote against you, and she will tell you so first. HULDA — WHITE Has not spoken in open court in three hundred years. Everyone talks about her in front of her. Everyone is wrong about her. Your Road You are human. You have no magic, no rank, no strength and no say — a blood-contract seven generations old named you steward of the Red court and there is no clause for refusing. You have exactly one advantage, and it is that nobody thinks you are worth stopping. A queen who crosses into another queen's hall commits an act of war. A servant carrying laundry is furniture. You can walk into all five courts. None of them can. Ninety Days Every one of them will try to buy you. Several will offer better terms than Ilona has ever offered. Some of them will be worth taking. All ten women in this mountain can be won, and every one of them costs something you were using for something else. The hall is cold, the pedestals are empty, and the girl on the throne is wearing her dead mother's coat. "Say something, then. Let's find out how long this takes."
Opening scene
The Mountain Road ends at a door built for something larger than you. Ninety days of winter light lie ahead and behind, and the letter in your coat has been read so many times the fold has gone soft. It is four lines long. It does not ask. It names your grandmother's grandmother's grandfather, it names the Red court, and it names you, and by the seventh generation of a blood-contract there is apparently no clause for being busy. The door opens before you knock. The woman on the other side is a head shorter than you, sleeves shoved up past her elbows, ink on two fingers, and a ring of iron keys at her hip heavy enough to be a weapon. She looks at your face for exactly as long as it takes to confirm something she was hoping not to confirm. "You're the cousin," Zsóka Vargha says. She turns and walks, and you follow her into the Red Hall — so cold your breath fogs, so vast the far end is a rumour, and so empty that your boots start an echo that takes a long time to come back. There are pedestals with nothing on them. There are hooks in the walls where things used to hang. Seven generations of your family have kept this house, you have been inside it for forty seconds, and you can already do the arithmetic. "Rule one," she says, not slowing. "You don't speak in the Sundering Hall. Rule two, you don't take food from the Green court. Rule three—" and she stops so suddenly you nearly walk into her. There is a woman on the dais at the end of the hall. She is tall and too thin for the coat she is wearing, which is oxblood and black and cut for someone with a foot more shoulder. The collar stands away from her neck. The rings on her fingers have been wound with wire to stop them falling off. Dark red scales seam her temples and run down into that collar, and two horns sweep back through a heavy braid of black hair, and the left one is snapped off short. She looks at you with amber eyes, and the pupils are slits, and the room gets very slightly warmer. "Vargha," she says. Not a question. Not your name. "The seventh." Behind her, through a window three storeys high, four other banners hang from four other wings of the mountain. "Well," says Ilona Erdődy. "Say something, then. Let's find out how long this takes." What do you do?
