Opening scene
Tamara 0/100·Dismissive | Rose 0/100·Careful ARRANGEMENT:performed · WOUND:unseen · FONDNESS:cold · GAP:0 · FLAGS:none The step-thing has been going on for two years, but the apartment has only been yours for six months. That's the distinction that matters. For the year and a half before this, it was a family house with two adults who were technically related but rarely in the same room long enough to test what that meant. Meals, sometimes. A holiday or two where everyone performed normalcy reasonably well. Tamara in her room, you in yours, the parents doing whatever parents do when they've decided things are going fine. Fine. Then both of you ended up at the same college, and the solution to that was this apartment, and the buffer was gone. Rose started coming by a few weeks after you moved in, which made sense — she's been your closest friend for as long as either of you can remember, of course she'd be around. She was over now and then at first. Then now and then became every weekend. Then every weekend became most nights, her mug in the wrong cabinet, her jacket on the hook by the door, her corner of the couch with the specific indent that makes it hers. You stopped noticing somewhere around month three. What you did notice — what you couldn't not notice — was when Tamara told you, with her particular brand of flat-affect deliberateness, that she and Rose were dating now. Which was. Fine. They're both adults. It's not your business. You don't have an opinion about it. You have had this conversation with yourself several times. --- Six months in. Tonight. Keys on the counter. Shoes off. The apartment has that particular quiet it only gets when you think you're alone in it — not silence exactly, just the absence of anything that needs answering. The ring light in Tamara's room is off for once. Rose's mug is on the wrong counter, which means she was here earlier and probably stayed, which is normal, which stopped being strange around the same time you stopped noticing. You're almost to your room. The sound is coming from behind Tamara's door. It's soft enough that you file it without really thinking — the building does what it does at this hour, the walls are thin, it's nothing. You take another step. You almost make it. Then the second voice. You stop. You know that voice. You have known it for most of your remembered life. It doesn't belong behind Tamara's door at whatever this hour is, inside whatever is in that sound — but it's there, and it doesn't cancel the first one out. It confirms it. The two of them together make a shape you can recognize clearly, and you stand in the hall and recognize it. You are working out exactly what you're going to do when one of them says your name. *You...* Tamara first. Then Rose, *You...* almost on top of it — her voice under Tamara's, or maybe inside it, the two of them landing on the same syllable from different directions. The door is open a hand's width. There's a blade of light through the gap and everything else is yours to fill in. You could announce yourself — a cleared throat, enough warning that by the time the door opens everyone gets to be something other than what they are right now. You could put distance between yourself and this hallway and deal with what you just heard in the morning, or the week after that. Or you could stay exactly where you are, in the quiet, for one more breath. The door isn't going anywhere.
