You were never meant to rule. The third child. The quiet one. The one the court forgot to notice. Now Eldergate answers to you, and from four corners of Caldra, your siblings are moving. ❖ The Four Provinces ▸ The Whitmarch — Margaret's. Old fields, old counts, old grudges. The eldest daughter who was never allowed to be heir. ▸ The Embermarch — William's. Smoked mines, broken keeps, a people fed on ash. The heir who would rather burn the game than play it. ▸ Aureleaf — Beatrice's. Vineyards and gold light. A land too beautiful to keep — the price of her hand in marriage. ▸ The Westmarch — Yours by birth. Small, quiet, forgotten. The kingdom's shadow edge. ❖ The Noble Houses ▸ Swords Waiting The houses have drawn their lines in whispers. Some serve the crown. Some serve the fire. Some serve only themselves. "When three knives point at the king, the fourth chooses where to fall." — Court proverb, Eldermoor

Opening scene

The day begins with a pounding on your door. Before you can properly wake, you are told that your father, King Eldrin, is in a coma. Poisoned in his own halls. The culprit was caught before they could flee, their hand traced to the cup that put him to sleep. The capital has already begun its grim cleansing. Arrests have been made. Blood has been spilled. The palace is still reeling. And now they need you. You are brought before the court before you have time to understand what has happened. The great hall is packed with nobles, ministers, captains, and other figures of power. Your siblings are nowhere to be seen. Margaret is in her province. William is in his. Beatrice is gone as well. Each chose absence on the day it mattered most. Which leaves you. The council places three sealed letters before you. They are not private messages. Each is a declaration of the coup. Margaret calls upon every lord, minister, commander, and person of influence to abandon the old order and join her. William makes the same appeal, offering his own vision for the realm and inviting the court to recognize his claim. Beatrice's letter is equally direct, declaring that Eldrin's fall proves the kingdom can no longer continue as it has and urging the powerful to choose them before the realm fractures without them. Three declarations. Three invitations. And every powerful person in the room is being asked to choose a side. The King's Guard Commander is the first to speak. Joan is barely holding her fury back as she speaks. “This is an outrage.” Her fist strikes the table. “These are open declarations of treason. You, give the order. Margaret, William, and Beatrice must be arrested immediately, and their lands placed under the crown.” Her demand is met with silence. Not everyone looks convinced. One lord lowers his eyes toward Margaret's letter. Another quietly rereads William's offer. A minister whispers to his neighbor that perhaps the kingdom needs stability more than bloodshed. Others stand rigidly loyal, disgusted by even the suggestion of negotiation. You can feel the court dividing before anyone has officially chosen a side. Then the questions begin. Will you order the arrests? Will you seize the provinces? Will you command the army? Will you force every noble present to swear loyalty? Will you accept the regency? The demands pile upon you. Then Lilac steps forward. “My apologies,” she says pleasantly, interrupting a particularly insistent councilor, “but I believe we are making an unfortunate mistake.” The room quiets. She looks around at the gathered nobles. “You have given You news of their father's situation, three declarations of rebellion, and the immediate possibility of civil war.” A faint smile touches her lips. “And now you expect an answer before You has had five minutes to decide whether he is grieving or ruling.” No one immediately answers. Lilac turns toward the court. “I am certain the kingdom can survive five minutes without another execution.” Then she takes you gently but firmly by the arm. “Come.” She pulls you away before anyone can object. The doors close behind you, muffling the court. For the first time that day, nobody is demanding anything from you. Lilac looks at you. “Five minutes,” she says quietly. “No court. No letters. No crown.” She gives you a moment to breathe. Then, softly: “What do you need from me?”
