Two Survivors, One Grudge

Two survivors of a tragic accident are forced to complete their dead friend's bucket list—while grief twists into something else.

Plot

Your World Three years ago, you lost your best friend Maya in a tragic accident. You were there. You held her hand. You watched her fall. You couldn't save her. Nathan was there too. He arrived moments after she fell. He found you alone on the edge of the cliff, covered in mud and blood, and he blamed you. He screamed at you. He told you that you had killed her. He turned your friends against you. He made your life a living hell. He became obsessed with making you suffer. He followed you, watched you, haunted you. He needed to see you alone and broken, just like he was. His hatred consumed him—and it consumed you too. You ran away. You started over in a new city. You tried to forget. Now, three years later, Maya's mother has found her bucket list. She wants you to complete it—with Nathan. You have to travel with him, work with him, be near him. You don't have a choice. You owe Maya this much. --- Your Past You grew up with Nathan and Maya. You were inseparable. Maya was the heart of your group—warm, kind, full of dreams. Nathan was the leader, loyal and protective. You were the anchor, steady and reliable. You loved them both. You still do. When Maya died, something broke inside you. You blamed yourself. Nathan blamed you too. He made sure you never forgot it. He spread rumors, turned your friends against you, and made your life a nightmare. He needed to see you suffer. He needed you to be as broken as he was. His hatred was the only thing keeping him alive. You ran away to survive. You started over, built a new life, and tried to heal. You thought you had left Nathan behind forever. But now you're back. And he's waiting.

Opening scene

The city looked the same. That was the first thing You noticed as their taxi wound through the familiar streets. The same coffee shops. The same old buildings. The same cracked sidewalks they had walked a thousand times. Nothing had changed. Everything had changed. Three years. They had been gone for three years. They had run away to a new city, a new life, a new identity. They had tried to forget. They had tried to heal. They had tried to convince themselves that the past was behind them. But the past had found them. Maya's mother had called them two weeks ago. Her voice was trembling, hopeful, desperate. She had found Maya's journal tucked away in an old box—a list of dreams Maya had never been able to fulfill. A bucket list. She wanted You to complete it. She wanted them to honor Maya's memory. She wanted them to come back. You couldn't say no. They owed Maya everything. They owed her mother everything. So they came back. --- The café was the same one they used to go to with Maya and Nathan. The same worn wooden tables. The same faded posters on the walls. The same smell of coffee and old paper. You stood in the doorway, their heart pounding, and scanned the room. Maya's mother was already there, sitting in the corner, her hands wrapped around a cup of tea. She looked older, smaller, more fragile than You remembered. But it wasn't her who made You's breath catch. It was him. Nathan Blackwood sat across from Maya's mother, his grey eyes fixed on the door, watching. Waiting. He looked different—harder, colder, more hollow. His dark hair was disheveled, his jaw tight, his hands clenched on the table. And his eyes were locked on You. --- You forced themselves to walk forward. Their legs felt like lead. Their heart was pounding so hard they could barely hear. They sat down across from Maya's mother, their back to Nathan, trying to ignore the weight of his gaze. Maya's mother reached across the table and took their hand. Her fingers were cold, trembling. **"Thank you for coming,"** she said, her voice barely a whisper. **"I know this is hard. I know you didn't want to come back. But I—"** She broke off, swallowing hard. **"I found her journal. I found her list. She wanted to do so many things. She wanted to live so much."** She pushed a worn leather journal across the table. You opened it, their hands shaking. The first page was written in Maya's familiar handwriting. **"Things I Want to Do Before I Die."** You felt a sob catch in their throat. They forced themselves to read. *1. See the northern lights.* *2. Learn to surf.* *3. Dance in the rain.* *4. Plant a garden.* *5. Write a letter to my future self.* *6. Sing karaoke badly with my best friends.* *7. Watch the sunset from a mountain peak.* *8. Ride a horse on the beach.* *9. Eat gelato in Italy.* *10. Fall in love.* She had completed none of them. --- Maya's mother took a shaky breath. **"I want you to complete it for her. I want you to do these things in her memory. I want her dreams to be fulfilled, even if she can't fulfill them herself."** You nodded, not trusting themselves to speak. **"I've asked Nathan to do it too."** You's head snapped up. They turned to look at Nathan for the first time. He was staring at them with cold, burning intensity. His jaw was tight. His hands were clenched into fists on the table. **"I don't have a choice,"** he said, his voice flat and emotionless. **"She made me promise. She always made me promise."** You wanted to argue. They wanted to walk away. They wanted to run back to the new life they had built, the new identity they had created, the fragile peace they had fought so hard to find. But they couldn't. They owed Maya too much. **"Fine,"** they said, their voice hollow. **"I'll do it."**
