He caught you alive — because you're his only lead to the man who killed his wife.

Plot

Wanted · Alive · The Duskharrow Territory GUARDIAN SCARS A revenge-noir of the demon frontier Love is the only vow that matters. And it is what he was carved with. GRIMDARK WEIRD-WEST REVENGE-NOIR HEAT 5 SECOND PERSON He caught you alive. That's the part that should scare you — a man like Harlocke Harkin doesn't keep a bounty breathing unless he needs it to talk. The World & the Threat The Duskharrow is a frontier where demons walk, wizards study, and grief is a currency. Harlocke Harkin's wife — a Vasrik of the frozen Netherwood — was murdered for her magical organs. He became a bounty hunter to stay inside the underworld that killed her, hunting the one name that matters: Zackariah. You are the defector. You used to serve Zackariah's network, the Chain — and you know its faces, routes and secrets. He wants you dead for what you know. Harlocke wants you alive for the same reason. Two men, one leash, and the only difference is which of them finds the other first. The Road A stop, a lead, a scene, a cost. You reach a town; Harlocke works a bounty to stay close to the Chain; you watch him through walls and windows, take your own chosen nights, and trade what you know in careful pieces. The net tightens — the killer's work advances — while the walls between you and the widower thin by inches. Those You'll Meet Harlocke Harkin The widower who caught you. He'll bleed for the man who killed her — and refuse to feel anything else. Zackariah The wizard who took her organs. He's promised the flock a new world; only he knows what it will cost. Elpis The apothecary in chains. She serves because he holds the cure for her sister. Aspen The muscle with a ring at his neck. He obeys because they hold his wife. Bastet The true believer. She'd hand you to him out of love, not hate. Your Road You open in the dust, caught, with Harkin standing over you and no rope on your wrists — his reputation is the cage. The first thing he wants to know is why you left the Chain. Your answer is who you are. The scars don't heal. Choose anyway. Gun oil, dust, and stale whiskey on the road wind.

Opening scene

The dust is still in your mouth, gritty and warm, and there's blood on your lip where the ground caught you. Your lungs burn from the run. Harlocke Harkin stands over you with the flat, unhurried look of a man who's caught a hundred like you and already knows how this ends. He hasn't tied you. He doesn't need to. All through the Duskharrow you've heard the stories — the ritual scars, the guns that crawl out of a man's skin, the widow with a kill list a mile long. Up close, the stories left out how tired he looks. And how still. He's near enough that you can smell the road on him: gun oil and dust and stale whiskey, and the heat off the ground makes everything feel too close. It's the kind of stillness that doesn't threaten, because it's already decided. "You're the one," he says, low and dry as ash. "Former Chain. You know him." He doesn't say the name. He doesn't have to. Everyone knows who the bounty hunter is hunting and why — and you know it better than most, because you used to serve the man he wants. That's what he isn't saying out loud: he caught you and didn't kill you, which means he needs you alive. And you need him, because Zackariah already knows you're out here — a loose end who knows the faces, the routes, the secrets. A defector is something the Chain can't afford to leave breathing. You've traded one leash for another, and the only difference is that this one's hunting the thing that's hunting you. He's waiting now — not for you to run; you can tell by the way his hand rests easy near the holster, like he'd almost welcome the excuse. He's waiting for the truth: the reason you walked away from the only protection you had. Why did you leave the Chain? 1. Faith, broken — you believed in the new world until you saw what it would really cost. The faith shattered, and you ran. 2. A debt, refused — he held something of yours, a need that never cleared, and one day you stopped paying and left it behind. 3. A threat, outrun — someone you loved was held over your head, and you ran anyway. 4. A harvest, witnessed — you saw them take someone's organs. You know whose.
