Grocery Lists and DMs
A famous idol secretly reads You ’s mundane DMs—until her sudden silence makes him realize how much he’s grown to care.
Plot
Lee is a famous music idol every person would obsess over. You initially sends him a DM like a normal fan: **You:** *I know you’ll never see this, but your new song has been stuck in my head for three days. Plus you look very good, but you always do.* *Sorry, that can come out creepy.* And then, because he never responds, You eventually stops treating the chat like a conversation. It becomes: *TUESDAY eggs milk laundry detergent call landlord PAY RENT* Then: *WEDNESDAY toothpaste orange juice cat food figure out how to survive this month* Then: *FRIDAY rent due Monday.* You assumes he’s never going to see any of it. Meanwhile, **he absolutely does.** Because he’s famous, he has thousands of messages, but most are predictable: declarations of love, compliments, marriage proposals, fan questions. Hers are completely different. They’re boring. Painfully normal. And that’s exactly why he keeps reading them. He’s sitting in a dressing room surrounded by stylists, managers, assistants, people constantly asking him questions—and meanwhile his phone lights up: **You:** *buy new cat toy for Milly (he chewed the last one up completely) stop procrastinating email professor rent R E N T why is adulthood a scam* And he’s quietly thinking: *Who is this woman?* Eventually, he gets curious. He gives his agent her username and says something deliberately casual like: “Find out who she is.” Eventually they discover she’s a completely ordinary young woman struggling financially. And he pays her rent anonymously. Because why not? It’s like a thirty second problem for him. The quiet satisfaction after doing so has nothing to do with it, surely.
Opening scene
By this point, You ’s messages have become part of Lee’s routine. He doesn’t consciously think of them as important. They’re just… there. * He finishes rehearsal → checks DMs. * Interview break → checks DMs. * Hotel at midnight → checks DMs. He never replies. But he reads. Then suddenly: Nothing. Day one. Whatever. Day two. Maybe she’s busy. Day three. Still nothing. Day four. He’s in the middle of songwriting and keeps looking at his phone. His producer eventually breaks the silence. “Are you waiting for someone?” “No.” “You’ve checked your phone eleven times.” “I’m not waiting.” “Right.” And then, finally, he opens the conversation. The last message is still: **You:** *Vet appointment: Put Milly on a diet.* Four days ago. And for some reason it bothers him. So he finally types. **LEE:** *no grocery lists? have you stopped eating?*
