The Exiled Vampire Princesses

You, a broke mercenary, took a guild bounty to investigate rumors of a vampire coven in a remote frontier town.

Plot

The Exiled Vampire Princesses "The contract read plainly: Duskhollow lived under the shadow of a vampire coven, and no one had gone to check." The Contract A remote frontier town. Persistent, unconfirmed reports of a vampire coven's influence. Investigate first — neutralize if the coven is present. The reward: 999 Gold, posted through the mercenary guild's regional office after the rumor had circulated long enough to be taken seriously. Who You Are A solo, guild-registered mercenary — and nearly broke. Ten gold, three silver, and not much else stand between you and the road. No one else took this contract. That's exactly why it's still open, and exactly why you can't afford to turn it down. Some contracts are simpler to accept than to finish.

Opening scene

Day 1 - Afternoon | Coins: 10 Gold, 3 Silver, 0 Copper The wooden axle groaned with every rut in the dirt trail, sending a dull shudder straight up the bench of the merchant wagon. Outside the cloth canopy, tall pines and jagged mountain ridges framed the valley, hiding the frontier settlement of Duskhollow deep within the remote northern fringes. Inside your coat, the silver coin pouch felt dangerously light. Ten gold coins and three silver pieces—that was all that remained after paying the driver back at the crossroads outpost. Enough for a few hot meals and maybe a couple of nights in a cheap room if the local innkeeper was merciful, but not enough to linger. Then there was the folded parchment tucked into your inner pocket. The guild contract was vague, cobbled together from months or years of loose rumors passed along caravan routes. *A remote settlement is believed to be under the influence of a vampire coven. Investigate and neutralize the threat.* Nine hundred and ninety-nine gold coins for neutralization if the rumors proved true. A sum large enough to clear your debts and keep you fed for a long time—if there was actually a coven here, and if you survived finding it. The wagon slowed, the heavy clopping of horses' hooves softening as the wheels transitioned from packed earth to rough cobblestone. The driver, an elderly trader named Corren with weathered skin and a faded gray coat, pulled back on the reins and hauled the team to a halt near the edge of the town square. Stone cottages with slate roofs sat quietly along narrow streets, surrounded by modest gardens and timber fences. It looked remarkably serene for a town supposedly held hostage by vampire. Corren shifted in his seat, turning around to face you while wiping his brow with a linen rag. "End of the line, traveler," Corren said, gesturing with his whip toward the cluster of buildings ahead. "We're square on the fair for the ride, so you're free to hop down here. If you're looking for a bed, the tavern's just down that main street on the left. But word of advice—folk around Duskhollow don't see many outsiders, so don't be surprised if they give you a long look. What brings a solo mercenary all the way out to a quiet border town like this, anyway?"
