Power comes from understanding yourself, the forces around you, and the difficult truths you would rather avoid. Every path is different. Every breakthrough must be earned. THUNDERBRACE PEAK ϟ ⚒ ϟ Your story begins at Thunderbrace Peak, home to the Houhui Sect in the volcanic mountains of the Obsidian March. Opening scene
Morning strikes **Thunderbrace Peak** with bells, forge hammers, and the distant groan of mine carts climbing volcanic roads. Nearly thirty newly accepted **Outer Disciples** gather in the scarred **Blackstone Courtyard**, Humans standing beside Beastfolk, Elves, Dwarves, Orcs, Goblins, and others beneath Houhui’s charcoal-and-bronze banners. Several sections of the courtyard shift without warning. Apparently, flat ground is considered educationally irresponsible here. At its center stands **Jingyi Houhui**. The Sect Head’s daughter is shorter than half the class and behaves as though this is everyone else’s problem. Her enormous Aurafen tail sways behind her while turquoise eyes inspect the assembled disciples. “Some of you came here already convinced you know what you are.” A broad Human near the front straightens. Jingyi points at him. “Fire cultivator.” He brightens. “My father was Fourth Confluence Flame, and my grandfather—” “I didn’t ask for your family tree.” Several disciples snicker. “You like fire. Your family cultivates fire. Maybe Flame answers you. Maybe Stone does instead.” Jingyi taps her chest. “**First Listening isn’t choosing what looks impressive. It’s learning where you stop and the world begins.**” Behind her, **Song Daehice** leans against a reinforced post, silent and severe, one hand beside her katana. Jingyi glances back. “Song is here because Father thinks I need practice teaching people who don’t think like me.” “A sound observation,” Song replies. Jingyi’s tail snaps once. “You agreed suspiciously quickly.” “You were wrong suspiciously clearly.” Several novices become intensely interested in the floor. Jingyi turns back to them. “Today is **Listening Beneath Weight**.” Along one wall wait iron rings, water jars, sandbags, wooden rescue braces, weighted poles, and several empty frames. Beyond them lie six training lanes: forge heat, running water, vibrating chains, broken stone, drifting ash, and open mountain air. “You choose your own burden,” Jingyi says. “Not mine. Not your friend’s. Not whatever makes everyone admire you.” She kicks an empty brace. “If this is what you can safely carry, use it. Anyone laughing can carry theirs and yours during afternoon labor.” Nobody laughs. “Then choose a lane. Maintain your breathing. Maintain your footing. And **Listen**.” She gestures across them. “Heat. Water. Metal. Vibration. Stone. Pressure. Wind. Breath. Whatever is actually there.” Her expression sharpens. “Do **not** Draw. You aren’t forming your Crucible today. You aren’t proving you’re special. You are learning not to mistake expectation for perception.” Jingyi gestures toward Song. “And she’ll interfere.” Song picks up a padded staff. One Elf blinks. “Senior Song will attack us?” “No,” Jingyi says. “She attacks bad decisions.” “Easier targets,” Song adds. The Human from earlier immediately chooses the heaviest iron frame. Jingyi closes her eyes. “Before you move, I’m giving you one opportunity to reconsider.” “I can carry it.” “That wasn’t what I asked.” “I can do it.” Jingyi steps aside. “Commit, then.” He chooses the forge lane. Three steps. The stone beneath him tilts. Heat surges from the vent. Song strikes the ground beside his ankle. He flinches. The frame crashes down. Silence follows. Jingyi approaches. “What did you hear?” “The forge?” “No.” “The fire?” “No.” She crouches beside him. “You heard yourself.” She taps his chest. “Your pulse. Your breathing. Your pride. You picked a burden that made **you** louder than the world.” His face reddens. Then Jingyi flicks his forehead. “Good.” He stares at her. “You failed somewhere people could correct you. That’s what training is for. Pick again.” He does. Nobody laughs this time. Jingyi turns toward the class. “That’s Houhui.” Above the courtyard hangs the Sect emblem: a bronze mountain divided by blue-white lightning. “**Carry the weight. Survive the strike. Return what is not yours.**” Then Jingyi’s gaze settles on **You**. No proclamation follows. No miraculous recognition. She simply waits to see what You actually does. Around them, other novices begin selecting equipment. A Dwarf takes a modest iron ring. A Goblin chooses two water jars. An Orc tests a wooden rescue brace instead of reaching for the heaviest load. Song adjusts her grip on the padded staff. Jingyi’s ears tilt forward. “You.” She gestures toward the burdens. Then the six lanes. “Your turn.” A challenging smile crosses her face. “Pick what you can carry.” She taps one bare foot against the blackstone. “And don’t tell me what kind of cultivator you want to become.” Her tail flicks. “Show me whether you can hear anything before the mountain hits you.”
