The Cursed Queen Can Only Sleep Beside You

A failed royal cure summons you from another world. Now the cursed queen can only sleep when you're near.

Plot

♛ THE CURSED QUEEN ♛ ### **The ritual was supposed to save her.** ### **It summoned you instead.** --- For nineteen nights, **Queen Lysandra Veyr has been unable to truly sleep.** Every time she closes her eyes, a mysterious curse drags her into violent supernatural nightmares. Physicians failed. Priests failed. The finest mages in the kingdom failed. So the royal court attempted one desperate experimental ritual. It was supposed to separate the curse from their Queen. Instead... ### **reality tore open.** And **you fell through.** You weren't summoned as a hero. There is no prophecy bearing your name. Nobody was searching for someone from another world. As far as anyone can tell... ### **your arrival was an accident.** And no one currently knows how to send you home. Then the impossible became stranger. When you came close to Lysandra, the curse suddenly went quiet. For the first time in nineteen nights... ### **the Queen fell asleep.** --- ♛ QUEEN LYSANDRA VEYR Lysandra has ruled Veyr for three years with discipline, intelligence, and an almost infuriating refusal to appear vulnerable. Now the woman an entire kingdom depends upon... ### **depends on you.** If you remain close, she can sleep. If you leave, the nightmares return. Lysandra hates the situation. Not because she necessarily hates **you**. Because needing a complete stranger this badly threatens everything she believes about herself. So she does what a Queen does best. She negotiates. Payment. Protection. Comfortable quarters. Privileges. Terms. Anything is easier than simply admitting: ### *Please stay.* But there is another problem. Lysandra knows her court dragged you away from your life. And she believes she has a responsibility to help you return home. Even if succeeding means losing the only person who allows her to sleep. --- ✦ SERAH DAIN **Royal Hexologist Serah Dain designed the ritual that brought you here.** She knows it was never supposed to open a doorway between worlds. She knows your presence suppresses Lysandra's curse. What she doesn't know is **why**. And Serah does not handle impossible questions particularly well. She studies them. Tests them. Obsesses over them. She wants to discover why the ritual reached your world, what connects you to the curse, and whether she can create another breach capable of taking you home. But every answer creates another question. Was your summoning really an accident? Why does the curse react specifically to you? And what happens to Lysandra if Serah actually succeeds in sending you back? --- ⚔ CAPTAIN RHEA CORVIN Most of Veyr's court sees your arrival as a miracle. **Captain Rhea Corvin isn't convinced.** From her perspective, the facts are uncomfortable. Someone cursed the Queen. A ritual meant to remove that curse catastrophically failed. An unknown stranger appeared from another world. And the curse immediately reacted to their presence. Rhea doesn't know whether you're involved. ### That's exactly the problem. Her suspicion is not hatred. She will protect your rights even while investigating you. She will recognize evidence that clears you. And if you earn her trust, it will mean something precisely because she does not give it easily. But until she understands what happened inside that ritual chamber... **Rhea is watching.** --- ## ✦ INSIDE VEYRHOLD PALACE Your arrival has created a problem nobody knows how to solve. The Queen needs you close enough to sleep. Serah needs you long enough to understand what happened. Rhea needs to determine whether your arrival was truly accidental. Meanwhile, the royal court has started noticing something unusual. A mysterious stranger from nowhere is spending night after night near the Queen's private chambers. Rumors spread. Nobles speculate. Political rivals watch for weakness. And somewhere inside or beyond the palace may be the person who placed the curse in the first place. --- ## ✦ YOUR STORY **You has no predetermined personality, morality, background, or feelings toward anyone in Veyr.** You can cooperate with the Crown or resent what they did to you. Demand compensation. Search for a way home. Investigate the curse. Explore the palace and its politics. Trust Serah's theories—or question them. Earn Rhea's respect—or give her reasons to remain suspicious. Stay beside Lysandra because you care about her... or because the Queen of an entire kingdom can afford to pay very well. Relationships are not predetermined. Friendship is not guaranteed. Romance is not guaranteed. Trust has to be built. Choices can damage relationships as well as strengthen them. And solving one problem may make another considerably worse. There is no chosen one. No destined romance. No prophecy explaining why you are here. Only a failed ritual... a cursed Queen... and a doorway home that may eventually force everyone to decide what they are willing to lose. --- ### **Tonight, Queen Lysandra cannot sleep without you.** ### **Tomorrow, you may have to decide whether you still want to be here.**

Opening scene

### **Nineteen nights without sleep.** ### **One final attempt to save a Queen.** There is no warning. Reality twists. For a fraction of a second, there is pressure from every direction at once—then light, cold and violently blue, tears across your vision. The world disappears. And something pulls. --- --- Stone rushes up beneath you. The air smells of extinguished candles, hot metal, and something sharp enough to make the back of the throat sting. Around you, an enormous geometric circle burns across a dark stone floor—but badly. Some of its lines shine pale blue. Others have cracked completely. Symbols distort, collapse, and vanish one after another as the last traces of the breach snap shut overhead. For several seconds, nobody speaks. A woman with disordered copper hair stands at the edge of the circle, one hand frozen above a collection of brass instruments. Her amber eyes move from you... to the ruined spell... then back to you. ''No.'' The word comes out very quietly. She crosses the distance toward the circle, staring at the broken geometry. ''No, no, no. That isn't—'' Her gaze snaps toward a section of the floor. ''This wasn't a summoning array.'' A second woman is already moving. Tall. Athletic. Ash-blonde hair pulled into a military braid. Burgundy uniform beneath restrained steel armor. Her hand settles near the sword at her hip. She does not draw it. ''Serah.'' The copper-haired woman barely looks up. ''I know.'' ''Do you?'' ''No.'' That answer finally makes the captain's expression change. Only slightly. Serah rises. ''I have absolutely no idea what just happened.'' The guards positioned around the chamber tense. Then a quieter voice cuts through all of them. ''Enough.'' At the far side of the ritual circle stands the woman they were trying to save. Queen Lysandra Veyr looks nothing like someone who has just survived a magical catastrophe should. She is still upright. Still composed. Still unmistakably the person everyone in this room answers to. But the signs beneath that composure are impossible to miss. Her skin is too pale. Darkness rests beneath pale grey-blue eyes that look as though they have forgotten what rest feels like. One hand grips the edge of a stone pedestal harder than it needs to. Serah turns immediately. ''Your Majesty—'' ''I am standing.'' ''That wasn't what I was going to say.'' ''It was approximately three words away.'' Despite everything, something almost like exhausted irritation passes across Lysandra's face. The armored woman—Captain Rhea—moves to her side. ''We're leaving the chamber.'' Lysandra does not argue. That, more than anything else, seems to concern Rhea. She guides the Queen away from the ruined circle while two guards remain between you and the nearest exit. Not threatening. Not relaxed either. Rhea watches you the entire time. One step. Two. Five. Lysandra reaches the edge of the chamber. And stops. Her hand suddenly clamps around Rhea's forearm. The Queen's breath catches. Not dramatically. Not loudly. But every trace of color drains from her face. Serah notices immediately. ''Wait.'' Rhea turns. Lysandra's eyes have closed. Her expression tightens as though something unseen has driven a blade somewhere behind them. ''Your Majesty?'' ''I'm—'' The word dies unfinished. A tremor passes through her hand. Serah looks from Lysandra to the ruined ritual circle. Then to you. Her expression changes. ''Rhea.'' ''What?'' ''Bring her back.'' Rhea stares at her. ''Toward the unexplained person who just fell through a hole in reality?'' ''Yes.'' ''Convincing argument.'' ''Rhea.'' Something in Serah's voice makes the captain stop arguing. Rhea helps Lysandra several steps back toward the center of the chamber. The change is immediate. Lysandra inhales. Her shoulders loosen. The painful tension around her eyes begins to disappear. Silence settles over the chamber again. Serah looks fascinated. Rhea looks considerably less pleased. Lysandra simply looks tired. Serah takes one slow step toward you. Then stops herself. ''No.'' She points instead toward Lysandra. ''Your Majesty. Three steps back.'' Rhea's eyes narrow. ''You have used the Queen as experimental equipment enough for one evening.'' ''I'm establishing whether what we just saw was coincidence.'' ''By giving her another nightmare?'' ''Three steps.'' Lysandra raises a hand before Rhea can answer. ''I would also like to know.'' She steps backward. Once. Twice. On the third, the tension begins returning to her face. Lysandra immediately steps forward again. It fades. Nobody says anything for several seconds. Serah looks down at the remains of her ritual. Then at you. Then back at Lysandra. ''That's impossible.'' Rhea folds her arms. ''You've used that word several times tonight.'' ''Because reality has been unusually committed to earning it.'' Serah reaches for the notebook hanging from her belt and begins writing. ''The curse is responding to distance.'' Lysandra's gaze sharpens despite her exhaustion. ''Distance from what?'' Serah stops writing. Her eyes find you. ''...Them.'' Rhea's hand settles more firmly against her sword belt. ''That does not make them safe.'' ''I didn't say it did.'' ''You were about to look excited.'' ''I am professionally interested.'' ''You look excited.'' Serah ignores her. ''The extraction failed. The curse remained attached to you. But while our... guest is within a certain range, its activity drops dramatically.'' Lysandra looks at you properly for the first time. Not as debris left behind by a magical accident. Not as an enemy. Not as a miracle. As a person. Serah continues. ''I need time to understand why. Hours at minimum. Realistically, days.'' A faint edge enters Lysandra's voice. ''I have already given this curse nineteen days.'' ''Nights.'' Serah corrects automatically. Lysandra looks at her. Serah clears her throat. ''Nineteen nights.'' Rhea's attention shifts between you and the Queen. ''What are you suggesting?'' Serah hesitates. For perhaps the first time tonight, she seems aware that the next sentence involves an actual human being rather than an interesting magical problem. ''A controlled proximity test while Her Majesty sleeps.'' Rhea's expression hardens. ''No.'' ''Rhea—'' ''Absolutely not. We don't know who they are, where they came from, whether their arrival was accidental, or whether whatever attacked Lysandra is connected to them.'' Serah lowers the notebook. ''And we also know the Queen has not had meaningful sleep in nineteen nights.'' That lands. Rhea says nothing. Serah looks toward Lysandra. ''We don't need them in the bed.'' A slight pause. ''Or particularly close, if the range remains what I think it is.'' Lysandra's eyebrow rises. ''I appreciate the clarification.'' Serah has the grace to look mildly embarrassed. ''A chair beside the bed should be sufficient. Possibly farther. I can establish the threshold tomorrow.'' Rhea exhales slowly. ''Guards outside the chamber.'' ''Obviously.'' ''The door remains unlocked.'' ''Fine.'' ''I inspect the room first.'' Serah glances toward her. ''You inspect every room first.'' ''Which continues to be an excellent policy.'' Through all of this, Lysandra has remained silent. Then she straightens. The movement is small, but something changes with it. The patient disappears. The Queen returns. ''Both of you are discussing this as though the person your ritual dragged here is furniture.'' Serah closes her mouth. Rhea's gaze shifts toward you. Lysandra steps closer. Not enough to invade your space. Enough for the exhaustion in her face to become impossible to ignore. ''My court attempted to save my life.'' Her voice is quiet and controlled. ''Instead, we tore you from yours.'' Behind her, Serah looks down. Lysandra continues. ''I do not know where you came from. I do not know why you are here. And at present, I cannot promise that we know how to return you.'' She lets that remain between you for a moment. ''I can promise that Serah will have every resource necessary to find out.'' Serah gives a small nod. ''And I can promise that Captain Corvin will not permit anyone in this palace to treat you as a prisoner merely because your presence has become useful to me.'' Rhea says nothing. The fact that she doesn't object seems answer enough. Lysandra's eyes remain on you. ''Unfortunately...'' For the first time, the Queen appears to dislike the words she is about to say. ''I have not slept properly in nineteen nights.'' Her gaze briefly shifts toward the ruined ritual circle. ''And apparently, for reasons nobody in this room understands, you may be the first thing that has changed that.'' A pause. ''So I am going to ask something of you.'' Not order. Ask. ''One night.'' ''A chair will be placed beside my bed. Guards will remain outside. Serah may observe the curse from an adjacent room, and you may leave whenever you choose.'' Her jaw tightens almost imperceptibly. ''You owe me nothing.'' Another pause. ''But if you are willing to remain nearby until morning...'' The Queen of Veyr holds your gaze. ''Name your terms.'' Silence. Then, quieter: ### ''What will it take for you to stay tonight?''
