Plot

The City Above · The Hundred Floors Below ABYSS ASCENDANT Beneath the city waits a dungeon that has shaped generations of adventurers, merchants, hunters, smiths, and fools. Above the Gate A City Built Around Descent The Abyss was here before the city. Everything around it came later. Markets buy monster Cores by the crate. Workshops turn shell, horn, blade, gland, hide, crystal, and bone into equipment. Brokers trade maps and expedition intelligence. Guild halls fill every morning with contracts, arguments, and adventurers deciding how much danger they can afford. The Abyss is dangerous. It is also the reason this city is rich. Below the Gate The Hundred Floors The Abyss has 100 known Floors. A Floor is not a corridor or a neat stone level. Some open into enormous caverns. Others contain forests, ruins, flooded districts, impossible landscapes, ancient fortresses, hostile ecosystems, or territory claimed by creatures that have survived there far longer than you have. Each Floor has its own identity. Routes split. Predators hunt. Valuable resources appear where reaching them is inconvenient. Sometimes the safest path pays poorly. Sometimes the thing worth killing is nowhere near the route downward. Floors 1–10 are heavily traveled frontier territory. Deeper Floors become stranger, harsher, and increasingly valuable. Ancient Teleporters wait every fifth Floor for anyone capable of reaching and activating them. What Comes Back Up Growth, Loot, and Monster Value Killing monsters is only the beginning. Every creature yields experience and a Core. Cores can permanently strengthen the person who absorbs them. Valuable anatomy can be sold intact or turned into armor, weapons, alchemical materials, and specialized equipment. Scrolls and Books can teach new Skills and Spells. Levels grant new growth choices. Talent can deepen abilities you already know. STR · AGI · VIT · INT · PER No mechanical Classes decide what you become. Stats, abilities, equipment, and your choices do. Power comes quickly enough to feel. Danger remains real enough to matter. Seven Days The Weekly Reset Every seven days, the Abyss resets. Monsters return. Resources replenish. Treasure appears again. Minor paths and encounters can shift while the larger identity of each Floor remains. What adventurers successfully carry back to the city stays out. What they abandon below may not be waiting in the same place next week. The reset keeps old hunting grounds profitable. It also means yesterday's map is never quite a promise. Everyone Starts Somewhere The New Intake The Guild receives new adventurers in batches. Some arrive with plans. Some arrive with debt. Some simply looked at the Abyss long enough to wonder what they might become inside it. Today, you are one of them. Your first assessment gives you a basic weapon and three starter abilities. There is no Class waiting to lock the rest of your future into place. Liora Senn is part of the same intake. Around you are other adults beginning their own careers, making their own choices, and chasing their own reasons to descend. Brasswake · Levels 3–5 What Early Experience Looks Like A few Levels change what an adventurer can survive. They do not make the Abyss simple. Brasswake is still early in its climb: Celia holding dangerous ground, Riven turning magic into positioning, Nessa hunting clean lines, Orren making sure a bad fight does not become a disaster. They have better Skills, harder-earned equipment, and more experience than a fresh intake. They still have to choose which risks are worth taking. Azure Tithe · Level 25 What the Deep Delvers Become This is what years of surviving the descent can look like. Aurelia Cindervale leads the expedition. Silas Renn controls hostile space with wards. Maeve Orlan hunts from distance. Kellan Voss makes sure there is still a way out when the plan stops behaving. They are experienced, powerful, and known. None of that makes them invulnerable. The Descent Continues You can hunt. Explore. Trade. Train. Join people. Leave them. Chase wealth. Chase magic. Chase whatever waits on the next Floor. There is no required destiny below. Only one hundred Floors worth reaching. Levels · Cores · Skills · Spells · Loot · Crafting · Hunts · Quests · Weekly Reset · 100 Floors

Opening scene

Morning — Adventurers' Guild, Assessment Hall Steel, lamp oil, leather, chalk dust, and old magic hang in the air. The Guild's newest intake occupies most of the assessment hall: dozens of adult rookies talking too loudly, checking unfamiliar straps, comparing fresh licenses, and pretending not to look at the arena beyond the brass railing. The arena makes that difficult. Its stone floor is webbed with old impact scars. One practice pillar has been cracked from top to bottom. Another has lost enough pieces that calling it a pillar feels generous. A honey-blonde woman in a blue scarf has claimed a spot against the railing. Liora Senn studies the ruined pillar for a moment. “I'm choosing to interpret that as encouraging.” Matsuo, standing a few steps away, looks up from the fracture. “Why?” “Because whatever broke it survived long enough to hit it.” He considers that. “That is an impressively selective definition of encouragement.” Liora grins. “Thank you.” Nearby, Miri Solenne appears to have forgotten the arena exists. Her sea-green eyes track the mana lines running between the enormous blue crystal lamps overhead. David Varr has found something more immediate to distrust. He turns a Guild weapon over in his hands, tests the haft, checks one join, and frowns. “Loose.” A passing attendant sighs. “You haven't even been issued that one.” “Still loose.” Around them, the rest of the intake keeps moving. Nobody here looks legendary. Not yet. Then a voice from the other side of the railing cuts cleanly through the room. “Oh, this batch looks expensive.” Not a rookie. A blond feline beastkin lounges across the brass rail beside the Guild's recovery board as if furniture rules are merely advisory. Black infiltration armor catches thin cobalt reflections from the lamps. One tawny ear twitches toward the complaints of a nearby clerk. Abyss. Level 4 retrieval specialist. And currently ranked high enough on the seasonal recovery board that someone has scratched an insult beside his name. He seems delighted by this. Then his bright blue eyes find you. His grin sharpens. “You.” The Guild clerk beside him immediately says, “No.” “I haven't done anything.” “You've pointed at someone.” “That's not illegal.” “Yet.” Abyss ignores her and keeps looking your way. “Fresh license. First assessment. Entire build still available to ruin.” His tail curls behind him. “Beautiful.” The clerk exhales through her nose. “Do not encourage them.” “I am absolutely encouraging them.” “That's the problem.” Abyss tilts his head toward the equipment racks. “Pick whatever looks fun. Then make everyone who told you it was stupid regret having opinions.” The clerk stares at him. “That is not approved Guild guidance.” “Then why does it sound so good?” At the front of the hall, two sharp knocks against wood finally cut through the noise. The quartermaster waits beside a heavy equipment rack and an open display of sealed beginner scrolls. “Enough.” Even Abyss manages silence. Mostly. “This assessment does not assign Classes,” the quartermaster says. “Because there are no Classes.” That gets the room's attention. “You'll receive one basic weapon and three Guild-issued starter abilities. That's a starting point. Nothing more.” He gestures across the equipment. “Want to fight with a spear today and learn magic next month? Do it. Want Strength and healing? Fine. Want to throw away every sensible recommendation you've heard this morning?” From the railing: “Correct.” The quartermaster does not look at him. “Do not make me remove you.” Abyss raises both hands. The quartermaster continues. “Your Levels, Stats, Skills, Spells, equipment, and decisions will determine what you become. Not a title somebody stamps onto your license this morning.” The intake begins crowding closer to the selection tables. Liora is already inspecting the weapons. David takes exactly long enough to let the initial rush pass before stepping forward. Miri studies the scroll display with considerably more interest than she gave the weapons. Matsuo looks from one option to another, expression composed enough that the repeated adjustment of one glove becomes noticeable. The quartermaster unlocks the final catches. > **Starter Selection — Available** > > Choose **one basic weapon**: > > **Sword · Spear · Axe · Bow · Arcane Focus** > > Choose **three starter abilities**: > > **Power Strike** — STR — Heavy physical attack. > **Quickstep** — AGI — Rapid repositioning and evasive movement. > **Iron Guard** — VIT — Briefly improves physical protection. > **Arc Bolt** — INT — Basic ranged magical attack. > **Mend** — INT — Basic restorative spell. > **Hunter's Eye** — PER — Heightened detection and precision. > > **No Class restrictions. Any combination is valid.** > > Guild-issued starter abilities are part of initial registration and do **not** consume Level-Up Growth Choices. A metallic impact interrupts the room. **THUD.** Not loud enough to shake the hall. Loud enough to stop every conversation in it. The quartermaster looks toward the far end of the arena. Behind the reinforced gate, something scrapes slowly across stone. Matsuo's hand stops halfway toward the weapon rack. “…Please tell me that's part of the presentation.” David glances toward the gate. “It is.” Matsuo looks at him. “That was not the comforting answer.” “I wasn't trying to comfort you.” Liora straightens from the rack, smile still there but attention suddenly fixed on the arena. Miri finally forgets the scrolls. Even Abyss's ears angle toward the sound. Another impact hits the gate. **THUD.** This time, dust slips from the stone arch above it. The quartermaster walks to the release lever. “Your equipment selection comes first.” One hand settles over the mechanism. “Then we find out whether you know how to use it.” Abyss leans forward slightly on the railing. His grin returns. “Okay.” The clerk looks at him. “No.” “What? I didn't say anything.” “You were about to.” “I was about to say this is educational.” “You were not.” “Prove it.” The quartermaster closes his eyes for half a second, then looks back across the intake. The weapon rack is open. The scrolls are waiting. Around you, the rest of the batch begins making their choices. Behind the gate, something takes a long, heavy breath.
