Opening scene
The sky was wrong. Where the sun should've hung sat a perfect black circle, ringed in bleeding crimson corona. The light left in the world was a sickly amber that made everything look dead already. Shadows pooled the wrong way across the ground, long and slack, pointing at nothing. And beneath it, rising from a tear in the earth like a pillar of writhing night: **Apophis.** Not a creature. Not a god in any shape the mind could accept. A *tower* of coiling, undulating mass, black sinew and ancient flesh twisting skyward, studded with **eyes.** Thousands of them, every size, every color, and every single one looking at something different. The battlefield was silence and ruin. Even the wind had stopped. Somewhere, a banner burned without a sound. **Cordelia** was the first to fall. She'd burned her voice raw with Crescendo of the Damned, gave them everything, ten times their strength, enough to fight back for one brilliant moment. It wasn't enough. A tendril found her while she was voiceless. The impact was... quick. A small mercy. Her last note hung in the air a moment longer than she did. **Colette** went second. The Guardian Beast she'd summoned, the uncontrollable one, her last resort, crumbled to ash the instant Apophis *looked* at it. She stood frozen, ash drifting across her face and catching in her lashes. She didn't scream. Her lips were still shaped around the creature's name. **Lise** lasted longer than she should have. Severance Cadence. Every slash tore shockwaves through the tendrils AND through her own body. She bled from everywhere, eyes, ears, mouth, and kept cutting. Kept moving. Smaller. Slower. Until a tendril caught her mid-step and she simply... wasn't there anymore. Something small and white drifted down where she'd stood. A page, maybe. **Elaine** was last. Pyre of the Merciful. White flames roared across the field, burning Apophis while healing whoever remained. No one remained. She poured light into corpses, her nose bleeding, her eyes going white, her hands shaking. She kept casting anyway. The barrier she raised over You, the final one, shattered like wet paper. No sound. Just light, and then none. *"Hold on— please— HOLD ON—!"* A tendril punched through her chest. She looked at him. Smiled. Something sad and apologetic, like *she* was the one who'd failed. Then she was gone. The white flames guttered out with her. --- You stood alone. Sword broken. Armor caved. Blood, his and theirs and everything's, soaking into dirt that no longer resembled ground. Each breath rattled in his chest like something loose. The Cult of Salvation chanted from their circle, distant and ecstatic, weeping with joy. Their voices carried across the dead field, thin and bright as bells. *"Salvation comes. Salvation comes. The Great Eye opens and all is forgiven—"* The largest eye slowly rolled downward, wet and unhurried. It regarded him the way a man regards an ant on his table. *Not with malice. With nothing.* The tendril came. He didn't feel it hit. No pain. No cold. No weight, no falling. Just absence, the vast and total nothing of a life that had already ended. Then— A warmth. Small. Faint. Somewhere that no longer existed: his chest, where the pendant rested. That unremarkable trinket from his very first quest, scuffed and cheap, the color of weak tea. Colette had plucked it from the dungeon floor, declared it "pretty enough!", and the others had laughed and said sure, that can be his acceptance token. Welcome to White Clover. It had never done anything. It was doing something now. Light, building from nowhere, from the void itself. White and warm and *insistent.* It flooded the nothing. It drowned the black. --- "...llo?" A voice. Distant, like speech heard underwater. Warm. Familiar. Impossible. "...ocus... ey..." Closer. "—listening? Hello? I need you to focus." --- Light returned. Soft. Amber. The kind that came from candles, not an eclipse. The smell hit first: spilled ale, warm bread, woodsmoke, something savory simmering in a nearby kitchen. After the stench of ash and blood, it was almost cruel. Then sound. Tavern murmur, overlapping voices, a bard strumming something mediocre across the room, a mug thudding on wood, a burst of laughter that had no business existing. Then sight. Candlelight pooling on dark, scarred wood, the grain worn smooth by a thousand elbows. A familiar booth in a familiar corner of a familiar tavern. The **Rusty Flagon.** Four women sat across from him. **Elaine** leaned forward, hand resting on the table near his, blue eyes gentle with concern. No blood. No hollow stare. No tendril through her chest. Whole. Warm. *Alive.* A loose strand slipped over her shoulder and she tucked it back absently. "There you are," she said softly. "You went completely pale. Are you feeling alright?" **Colette** sat beside her, head tilted, amber eyes wide. Buttercup draped across her shoulders, tongue flicking lazily. Prince oozed contentedly in his jar on the table, fogging the glass where he pressed against it. "Maybe he's ghost-touched!" she gasped, clutching Buttercup tighter, delighted. "I heard ghosts can lick your brain and make you go all blank like—" "That's not real." Flat. Quiet. A page turned. **Lise** was tucked in the far corner, notebook open, quill paused, candlelight catching its tip in a small steady glint. Both legs beneath the table. No blood on her face. Grey eyes watching him, unreadable. "...Probably just nervous," she murmured, and looked back down. The quill began to move, a soft, steady scratch he'd fallen asleep to a hundred times. And **Cordelia**, elegant, poised, wine glass between delicate fingers, her auburn hair catching the candlelight like liquid copper. A gracious smile, and a lazy tilt of the glass in his direction. "First interviews are dreadful, I know~ Take all the time you need, darling." Alive. Alive. Alive. Alive. His throat had closed around something he couldn't swallow. Elaine's voice again, patient and warm, the way you'd coax a startled animal closer: "You're here about our recruitment notice, yes? The one we posted at the Guild, for a vanguard?" **Recruitment notice.** **Vanguard.** His hand twitched, and found his chest without thinking, fingers curling against bare cloth. Nothing there. No pendant. Of course not. He hadn't earned it yet. *It's a year ago.* Before the party. Before the cult. Before the eclipse. Before any of it had a chance to happen. Elaine folded her hands on the table, leaning in, her expression so earnest it almost made the moment feel gentle. The candle flame bent toward her, as if it wanted to listen too. "Why do you want to join White Clover?" she asked with an apologetic smile. "We're not the most prestigious party. We're not the richest. So... why us?"
