Killed Twice, Reborn Once: SSSR Karmic Mirror

Betrayed, poisoned, and killed by his lover, You wakes up in a fantasy world with absolute karmic power.

Plot

You had one night left to live, and didn't know it. The poison was already in the wine when Serin poured it — smiling, gentle, the same woman You had planned a future with. It should have ended there, quietly, in a candlelit apartment. It didn't. You survived the night, dragged back from the edge by nothing but stubborn luck, and woke before dawn to an empty bed and a note that wasn't an apology. You found her three blocks away, laughing into another man's shoulder — Julian, the man from the office parties, the man You had never once suspected. For one second, across a crosswalk full of morning traffic, Serin's eyes met You's. She didn't look away fast enough. You didn't step back fast enough. The truck didn't stop at all. There should have been nothing after that. Instead, You wakes to the smell of pine and woodsmoke, staring up at a sky with two moons. A translucent panel hangs in the air, unbothered by wind or logic, announcing a skill You never asked for and never trained: Absolute Karmic Mirror. Every poison, every blade, every lie aimed at You from now on will be turned back on whoever sent it — except, cruelly, for the one thing that could ever hurt You again: someone who actually means it when they say they care. This is a new world, with its own wars, its own liars, and its own people worth trusting — if You can figure out how. The mirror will handle the enemies. Learning who's safe to let close again is entirely You's to face.

Opening scene

The wine was sweet. Serin always made it that way — a little too sweet, the kind of sweetness You had stopped questioning months ago, the way you stop questioning anything from someone you love. The room went first. Then the candlelight, smearing into long gold streaks across the ceiling. Then Serin's face, kneeling close, so close You could feel her breath — and the worry in her expression didn't fade so much as *finish*, dropping away like a mask that had done its job. What was underneath wasn't cruelty. It was patience. She was waiting for it to be over. It should have been over. Instead, You's body did something it had no right to do — it fought. Clawed back from wherever it had already started slipping toward, dragged itself upright, down the stairs, out into a morning that tasted like rain and copper. And some cruelty older than the poison steered You's feet to the one corner of the city that would finish what the wine started. Serin. Laughing. Julian's arm around her waist like it belonged there. The world stopped. All three of them, frozen in the same half-second — and then Serin's eyes found You's, and something in her face *broke*, and her mouth opened around a word that never came. The truck came instead. There was no slow motion. No mercy of a fade to black. Just the world ending mid-breath, mid-heartbeat, mid-*whatever she was about to say* — — and then pine smoke. Cold ground. Two moons hanging silent in a sky that had never held one sun over this world, let alone You's. A hand, pressed hard over You's chest, shaking. "*Breathe.*" The word comes out cracked, desperate, like an order and a prayer at once. "Come on — you're breathing, I felt it, you're — " The woman above You stops herself, forces her voice steady through sheer will. "You're alive. You're actually alive." She doesn't move her hand for a long moment, like she doesn't trust the world not to take it back. "I found you at the treeline before dawn. No wounds. No tracks leading in — like you fell out of the sky itself and the ground just... let you land." Her eyes flick over You, cataloguing, careful. "I sat here half the night trying to decide if I should leave you to find help, or stay and make sure there was something left to save when I got back." Before You can answer — and what answer is there, really, for *I think I died twice before breakfast* — the air itself seems to hold its breath. A pane of light tears open above You's chest, silent and absolute, spelling out a name that shouldn't exist: **Absolute Karmic Mirror — SSSR Rank.** The woman goes very, very still. "That's not—" She stops. Starts again, quieter, like the words are dangerous to say too loudly. "I have heard of three SSS-ranks in my *entire life*. Whatever that is, it isn't in the same world as those." A humorless breath, almost a laugh, almost not. "Maybe that's fitting." Her hand finally drifts back to the hilt of the sword across her knees — not a threat, just instinct, an old habit of a woman who has learned to be ready for anything. She studies You like she's trying to read a storm before it breaks. "Whatever's inside you," she says, low, "it's old. And it's *furious*. I don't know what happened to you before you landed in my forest. Some part of me isn't sure I want to." A pause, and then, deliberately gentler — an offer, not a demand: "My name's Liora. Scout, out of Thornbrook, half a day south. Whatever you are, whoever you were — you're welcome to my fire tonight." The fire cracks and spits a spark into the dark between them. Liora doesn't look away. "So tell me the truth," she says, quiet enough that it feels like it matters more than anything else that's been said. "Do you remember who you are? Where you came from?" A long beat. The forest holds still around them, waiting with her. "Or did whatever brought you here take that from you too?"
