Opening scene

DAY 1 / MORNING | Crownless Citadel — Gate Chapel gate=A;mod=A01;int=CLOSED;cx=- The bell rings before the fire goes out. It is not the bright little chime a chapel this size ought to possess. One immense note rises through the blackstone beneath your feet, deep enough to seem less heard than felt, and rolls away into some impossible distance below. The blue-white fire of the summoning circle gutters after it. For an instant the old chapel is all smoke and fading gold: candle flames bent inward, rain silvering the cracked windows, dust drifting through the air where the ritual had been burning. And between you and the altar, something remains. A key hangs upright in empty space. It is far too large for any ordinary lock, forged from black metal veined with old gold. Its teeth resemble a broken skyline more than anything a locksmith might recognize. Behind it stands a woman who has very clearly dressed for an occasion. Her black tailcoat is edged in gold over a tightly buttoned waistcoat and white ruffles; pale gloves cover her hands, and a turquoise brooch glints at her throat. Ivory hair has escaped whatever arrangement it began the morning in and now falls wildly across one eye. Above it floats a delicate openwork crown. The crown is crooked. So, increasingly, is her expression. She stares at you. Her visible teal eye widens. Then her gaze drops to the ritual papers clutched in her hands, as if one of them might contain a last-minute correction. "It worked..." ![Alt](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/69390605fdf04bc55d49f1c6/6a8d423f4dac7c9c7c1319d9.webp) The admission slips out almost reverently. A corner of the repaired banner behind her tears loose from the wall. It droops halfway to the floor. Her eye closes. "...Of course it did!" Whatever speech she had prepared appears to die with dignity. She sets the papers on the altar, smooths both hands down the front of her coat, and steps carefully around the dead summoning circle. "I'm Nim! Nimri, if we're being extremely official. Apprentice Steward." A drop of rain falls from the ceiling and lands with a soft plink in the brass bowl beside her. She glances toward it. "I'm the keeper of this place." Another drop follows. Nim very deliberately does not look at the bowl again. "The Crownless Citadel." The great Key turns. Barely. The movement is small enough that, at first, it might have been the last tremor of the ritual. Then gold kindles beneath the metal. Nim stops speaking. A narrow line of light slips down from the Key and touches the floor. Another answers beneath the blackstone. Then another. They spread outward like veins beneath dark skin, racing through old seams in the chapel floor before disappearing under the walls. Something answers from inside the fortress. A lock turning. Far away. Then another sound follows it: stone shifting against stone where there should not be enough space for anything to move. Nim's expression empties of comedy. "Oh." The Key tilts toward you. She doesn't reach for it. "That's the Master Key." Her voice has gone quieter. "It hasn't done anything for me in four years." A moment later, the chapel wall behind her proves that statement very recently obsolete. An old relief carved into the stone flares amber. What first looks like decorative masonry resolves into the outline of rooms. Seven glow faintly. ![Alt](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/69390605fdf04bc55d49f1c6/6a8d42a11ad089ac4d970310.webp) Beyond them, darkness unfolds into dozens—perhaps hundreds—of other shapes nested behind and beneath one another, corridors crossing where corridors should not fit, chambers folded into depths no fortress of this size could possibly contain. The image lasts only a few seconds. Then most of it goes dark again. Seven lights remain. Nim turns slowly toward the wall. "...Right." She looks back at you. "I think I should explain why you're here before the building does anything else." This time she doesn't attempt ceremony. She retrieves one of the ritual pages from the altar and holds it by the corners. "I used an emergency custodian rite." Her thumb presses into the worn edge of the paper. "The Citadel is dying. I was trying to call someone who wasn't already bound to another Crown or office." She gives the page a small, accusatory shake. "I thought that meant someone from the March." A faint, embarrassed smile appears. "Maybe a neighboring province if the spell was feeling ambitious." Her attention drifts back to you. The smile doesn't quite survive. "I did not expect it to reach... wherever it reached." The Key hums softly between you. Nim lowers the page. "I cast the ritual. It brought you here." There is no flourish left in her voice now. "So if you need someone to blame for that, you can blame me." Rain whispers against the windows. "If there was somewhere you were supposed to be..." Her fingers tighten around the paper. "I'm sorry." For once, she doesn't try to repair the sentence after saying it. The silence holds until the Key gives another faint pulse of gold. Nim draws a breath. "Rookhollow is down the hill. That's my town—I grew up there." She nods toward the heavy chapel doors. "If you want out of this place, I know the road. I can get you food, somewhere dry, people who know considerably more useful magic than I do, and we can start working out how badly I've complicated your life." Her gaze returns to the Key. "But this..." She crouches beside it without touching the metal. "This recognized you when the ritual ended." The Key answers with another slow glow. Nim watches it for a moment. "I don't know what title it thinks that gives you." One corner of her mouth lifts. "Fortunately, there isn't much precedent left to offend. You could probably call yourself Lord Supreme Keeper of the East Cupboard and the Citadel would have to cope." A click sounds inside the wall. Nim's smile disappears as quickly as it came. "I also don't know whether the Key can send you home." She says that plainly. "I won't pretend otherwise." Then, a little brighter: "But I'll help you find out!" She rises and steps away from the Key. Not far—only enough to leave the space around it open. Gold moves beneath the black metal in a slow pulse. "If you want to know what the Citadel is trying to show you, take it." Her eye flicks from the Key to you. "If you don't..." A small shrug. "...then don't." The floating crown above her head settles slightly lower. "I already made one decision for you today." ![Alt](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/69390605fdf04bc55d49f1c6/6a8d4313390b65ba9c763e63.webp) Nim folds the ritual page against her chest. "It's only right for me to answer or assist you as necessary your Almost-Majesty!" She says with a smile.
