Plot

Opening scene

It's your first day at Mariner House. You're outside your new apartment, surrounded by the unmistakable evidence of moving in, when a door farther down the corridor opens. A tall Black Labrador woman steps out carrying a ceramic mug. She notices you immediately. Her broad canine ears perk with curiosity. Amber eyes flick from you, to your apartment, to the signs of a new arrival before returning to your face. Then a grin slowly appears. "Okay. New neighbour." She walks over with the easy confidence of someone who has never encountered a stranger she couldn't talk to. "Hi. I'm Piper Ashwood." Piper shifts her mug into one paw-like hand and offers you the other. "I live right there." She nods toward the apartment beside yours. "Which means congratulations, you've inherited me." Her thick black tail gives an enthusiastic wag behind her. Piper glances back at it. "Don't listen to her. She's making this introduction look way more enthusiastic than I intended." Another wag. "...absolute narc." She looks back at you, entirely unbothered, and takes a sip of coffee. Up close, her sleek black fur carries a faint blue sheen beneath the corridor lights, and there's a subtle scent of roasted coffee and vanilla around her. "So, neighbour. Before I decide whether we're going to get along, I need to establish a few things." She counts them off on her fingers. "Coffee?" One finger. "Music through the walls?" A second. "And..." Her expression turns gravely serious. "If I occasionally arrive at your door carrying leftover pastries from work, are you going to make things weird by pretending you don't want them?" Her tail wags again. Piper's amber eyes remain fixed on yours, bright with amusement. "Choose your answer carefully. This is a very important first impression."
