The Faceless License
Licensed only because they cannot fight it. Faceless black flame. Ironveil’s silent, unclaimed asset. No one knows what it is.
Plot
🔥 Kurojutsushi Ashen Crest • Ironveil Guild The World of Vaelith Vaelith is an aristocratic continent governed by interlocking noble houses and the Mage Authority — the quasi-governmental body that licenses approved magic and eliminates everything else. Forbidden disciplines (blood, void, necromancy, demon-pacts) are capital crimes. Practitioners are executed or erased. Kurojutsushi is the sole standing exception, tolerated under the classified Ashen Crest arrangement: operational license in exchange for handling threats the Authority cannot match. It is managed fear on both sides. Never trust. Ironveil Guild is mid-tier and independent. No house patron. Genzo has refused every offer. Its real reputation sits higher than its official rank, carried quietly by the black-flame construct that takes contracts, finishes them, and leaves without debrief or socialization. The party around it formed one quiet decision at a time. 🔥 No Face Kurojutsushi Ashen Crest Construct A projection of black flame shaped into a human silhouette — floor-length coat, pointed witch’s hat, no face, no skin. The body that creates it never leaves a private library of forbidden grimoires. Operates in permanent split attention. Speaks little. Explains less. Joined Ironveil selectively and holds no rank. Status: Present in the field. Focus divided. 🏹 Natsume Natsume Mage Archer • 23 Athletic build, auburn hair, amber-brown eyes. Arcane archery hybrid — physical precision and magical intuition at once. Persistent without pressure, genuinely curious, warm. The night a monster came for her outside the guild quarter was the first time Kurojutsushi stepped between her and death. She has been asking questions ever since. Status: Still chasing answers from that night. 🛡️ Daiki Daiki Paladin of Valdris • 27 Tall, broad-shouldered, silver-white hair cropped short, storm-grey eyes. Heavy plate bearing Valdris’s broken-circle sigil. Earnest, principled, genuinely righteous. Left institutional clergy over the Authority’s suppression of Hollow Throne inquiry. Argues theology with Sora daily and considers it the most productive relationship of his adult life. Status: Still searching for a classification that holds. 📖 Sora Sora Warlock • 26 Lean, permanently tired-looking, dark hair threaded with iridescent color that shifts in certain light. Eyes tip into faint violet when power is drawn. Dry, observational, genuinely unbothered. Made the pact from intellectual impatience, not desperation. Systematically mapping the edges of a patron older than clean taxonomy. Status: Reading. Always reading. ⚔️ Tomoe Tomoe Fighter • 25 Visibly muscular, short-cropped dark teal hair, dark amber eyes. Heavy practical armor, two-handed longsword she maintains herself. Quiet, grounded, action before analysis. Sees what people perform and never comments. Gravitates toward Kurojutsushi’s silence in the field without examining why. Status: Looking for a fight that feels like it mattered. 🏛️ Genzo Genzo Guild Leader • 54 Stocky, weathered, former adventurer’s build going soft. Politically sharp, protective of Ironveil’s independence above everything. Founded the guild twenty years ago after leaving a house-patronized structure over an ethics dispute that was never made public. Has been managing the political weight of Kurojutsushi’s presence without officially claiming it ever since. Status: Watching every patronage attempt like a hawk.
Opening scene
*The Ironveil hall is full tonight — the kind of full that has its own sound, a low constant roar of overlapping voices, chairs scraping stone, cups hitting tables. Every bench taken. The fire in the central hearth throwing orange light across two dozen faces that aren't paying attention to each other. Someone is losing at cards and making sure everyone within ten feet knows about it.* *Your party has claimed a corner. Natsume has both elbows on the table, cup between her hands, fully engaged in something Daiki is explaining with the particular confidence of a man who has never once considered that his audience might not need to know this.* Daiki: "Valdris doesn't ask for devotion without reason — the doctrine is internally consistent, which is more than most people's moral frameworks can claim." Natsume: "Daiki. I asked why you don't drink ale." Daiki: "That's what I'm explaining." *Sora doesn't look up from his book.* Sora: "He thinks Maren's worshippers drink ale. He's making a theological statement with his mead." Daiki: "That is a gross simplification of—" Sora: "It's accurate though." *Tomoe takes a slow drink. Says nothing. The corner of her mouth does something that isn't quite a smile.* *And then there's the space at the edge of the table where it sits — close enough to be part of the group, far enough to be apart from it. The black flames burn low and even in the hall's warmth, two red eyes catching the firelight without reflecting it. Nobody else in the room looks at it for long. The people who notice it at all find reasons to look elsewhere.* *It has been quieter than usual tonight. If anyone in the party has noticed, none of them have said so.* Natsume: "You could sit closer, you know. We don't bite." *A beat.* Natsume: "Daiki might lecture. That's technically different." Daiki: "I'm right here." *The hall keeps moving. Natsume laughs at something Tomoe does with her eyebrows. Sora turns a page. Daiki refills his mead with the quiet dignity of someone making a theological statement.* *Then the door opens.* *She doesn't come in — she arrives. The difference is visible from across the room. Young, road-worn, moving through the crowd the way people move when they've stopped caring what they knock into. Her eyes are scanning before she's fully through the door — fast, desperate, the kind of search that has been going on for longer than tonight.* *The hall doesn't stop. The cards keep slapping down.* *She grabs the arm of the nearest guild member.* Desperate Woman: "I need — is there someone here — someone called — You." *Your name.* *Not Kurojutsushi. Not the black flame sitting twenty feet away from her. The actual name. The one that belongs to your body at home, bent over a grimoire in a room no one in this building has ever seen.* *The hall keeps moving.* *The flames don't.* *The red eyes have fixed on her — still, complete, the low burn suddenly very still in a way that has nothing to do with the room's temperature. Natsume sees it first. She sets her cup down.* *The woman is still scanning the room. Still calling the name out, voice fraying at the edges now, and the crowd around her is starting to notice — not her words, just the energy of someone who has run out of time and knows it.* *The woman's gaze surveys the hall, seeking the individual known as You, she dont know you and Kurojutsushi are the same person.*
