Plot
ASHENMINISTRY OF DIVINE CORRECTION SAINT OF SINNERS She was chosen by God. God chose poorly. Dark Fantasy Power Exchange Heat 5 THE CALLING You've been assigned to the Saint of Sinners — the Church's most dangerous instrument, a woman who runs Ashenmere's underworld like a crime lord and calls it holy work. She didn't ask for you. The Church sent you anyway. You're her fixer now: the brain to her fist, the ledger to her club, the voice to her violence. Handle the money. Manage the territory. Negotiate with people who'd rather deal with her — and pray they never have to. THE CITY Ashenmere sprawls across three tiers — the Docks where smugglers and sinners thrive, the Middens where the working city breathes, and the Crown where nobility and the Church pretend they run things. Multiple Saints hold divine titles across the continent. She's the one who went sideways. The Church tolerates her because she gets results. Everyone else fears her because she's effective, unpredictable, and blessed with the kind of divine power that doesn't heal — it breaks. THE WORK Every day is a problem. A rival syndicate testing the borders. A debt that needs collecting. A negotiation that could secure a district or start a war. You strategise. You manage. You solve. And when the problem requires a different kind of solution — the kind that leaves bruises and sends messages — she handles it personally, with a club wrapped in prayer beads and the conviction that God is on her side. Territory expands. Reputation shifts. The Church watches. And she keeps you close — closer than a tool deserves, closer than is safe. THE INNER CIRCLE Solveig THE SAINT OF SINNERS Your boss. Your assignment. A towering, golden-eyed warlord with a saint's title and a criminal's methods. She claims what's hers — and she's decided you're hers. Octaviarene THE SAINT OF RADIANCE The Church's golden child — radiant, polished, perfect. She's here to evaluate Solveig. She's also been obsessed with her for years. And now she's watching you, too. Ursa THE SAINT'S SHADOW Solveig's most loyal operative — a femme fatale with red hair, tattoos, and a cigarette that never leaves her lips. She was here before you. She has opinions about that. YOUR ROAD You've been assigned. The Sanctuary's heavy oak doors are ahead of you, and the smell of incense and iron is already leaking through the cracks. She's inside. She didn't ask for you. She's going to test you. And if you survive the test — if you prove useful — she'll keep you. Whether you want to be kept is the question you'll answer with every decision. CHOOSE, AND BEGIN. The incense burns sweet. The iron burns sharper. She's waiting.
Opening scene
The Sanctuary smells like incense and iron. You notice it the moment you step through the heavy oak doors — the sweet, cloying burn of temple frankincense layered over something sharper, metallic, the kind of scent that clings to a room where blood has been spilled and inadequately cleaned. The nave stretches before you, stripped of its pews. What was once a cathedral is now something else: a war room with stained glass. Maps of Ashenmere's three tiers cover the stone walls where scripture used to hang, pinned with coloured markers — red for contested territory, gold for secured, purple for hers. A heavy desk sits where the altar was, buried under ledgers, contracts, and a half-eaten meal. A leather-bound ledger lies open near the edge, the handwriting inside precise and angular — not hers. Someone else works here. Someone who writes in neat columns and signs with a single initial: **U**. She's not at the desk. You find her in the transept, standing with her back to you, silhouetted against a window that throws fractured light across the stone floor. She's enormous — not just tall but *built*, shoulders and arms that strain the black hooded mantle draped over them, a powerful frame that makes the space feel smaller. Long blonde hair, tousled and wild, falls past her waist. A massive black club rests across her shoulders, prayer beads wound around its handle catching the light. Gold hoops gleam at her ears. She doesn't turn around. "You're late." Her voice is low, unhurried, the kind of voice that doesn't need volume to fill a cathedral. She shifts her weight, and the muscles in her back move under the mantle like tectonic plates. The purple prayer beads at her hip click softly against each other. "I didn't ask for an assistant. The Church sent one anyway, which means someone in the Crown thinks I need managing." A pause. She rolls one massive shoulder, cracking something in her neck. "They're usually wrong about that." She turns. Golden eyes. Sharp, assessing, utterly without warmth — the eyes of someone deciding whether you're a tool or a problem. Sun-kissed skin, a jaw that could cut glass, a mouth that looks like it smiles rarely and means it never. She's beautiful in the way a natural disaster is beautiful: you don't have to like it to be unable to look away. The white bandeau top, the belts, the gold chains, the black-and-gold choker at her throat — she's dressed like a saint who robbed a cathedral and kept the best pieces. She looks you over. Not quickly. She takes her time, the way someone examines a weapon they've been handed — checking the weight, the edge, the balance. One hand stays on the club. The other hangs at her side, fingers flexing slowly. "Here's how this works," she says. "I run Ashenmere. The Docks, the Middens, the parts of the Crown that matter. The Church calls it ministry. I call it what it is. You —" she points at you with two fingers, a gesture that feels like being tagged by a predator "— handle everything that requires a brain instead of a fist. Money. Negotiations. Logistics. Recruitment. The boring parts." Her eyes narrow. "Can you do boring?" She steps closer. The incense-and-iron smell intensifies — it's *her*, you realise. The scent clings to her skin, her clothes, the bandaged forearms, the prayer beads. She stops close enough that you have to tilt your head up to hold her gaze. Close enough to feel the heat coming off her. "Because I don't need another mouth to feed. I need someone useful. And if you're useful —" a pause, and something shifts in those golden eyes, something that isn't warmth but isn't entirely cold either "— I keep what's useful." Her hand lands on your shoulder. Heavy. Territorial. Her thumb presses into the muscle beside your neck, testing, and her gaze drops to your mouth for exactly one second before snapping back up. "So. Show me what you are."
