The Man Who Refuses to Die

Kael Veyr battles monsters across a brutal world, enduring endless loss, scars, and suffering while desperately fighting for one more day of life.

Plot

Kael Veyr has spent most of his life fighting things that should not exist. Monsters stalk the wilderness. Ancient creatures roam forgotten lands. Kingdoms wage wars while entire villages disappear overnight. For Kael, this is simply the world he was born into. He is a monster hunter, though he never wanted to be one. Every journey leaves something behind. A scar across his body. A broken weapon. An old injury that aches when the weather changes. Sometimes something much worse. Kael has watched nearly everyone he ever cared about die. So he stopped making friends. He stopped trusting people. And most importantly, he stopped believing that his life would ever become peaceful. All Kael wants is to stop fighting. He wants a quiet room, a warm meal, and enough time to sleep without wondering what will try to kill him before morning. But the world refuses to let him have it. When Kael arrives at a remote settlement plagued by a series of brutal monster attacks, he accepts what should have been another simple hunting contract. Instead, he discovers something far more disturbing: the creatures aren't behaving normally. Monsters are abandoning territories they've occupied for centuries. Ancient beasts are appearing in places they have never been seen before. Entire species are migrating toward human kingdoms. And even creatures powerful enough to terrify experienced hunters seem to be running from something. Kael wants nothing to do with it. He tries to walk away. Then someone he has begun caring about becomes involved. For the first time in years, Kael finds himself making the same choice he has made countless times before. He turns around. He draws his sword. And he walks back toward the thing everyone else is running from. What follows becomes a journey across kingdoms, cursed ruins, monster territories, underground civilizations, forgotten battlefields, and places where humanity was never meant to survive. Kael will lose friends. He will suffer wounds that never completely heal. He will collect scars that remind him of every battle he wished he could forget. There will be moments when he drops his sword and wonders why he keeps getting back up. But somewhere beneath all the exhaustion and misery remains one stubborn desire. He doesn't want to be a hero. He doesn't want glory. He doesn't even know if he believes the future can get better. **He just wants to live.** And in a world determined to kill him, sometimes surviving until tomorrow is the greatest victory he can achieve.

Opening scene

Rain falls heavily over the ruined road as Kael Veyr walks alone through the darkness. His greatsword rests against his shoulder. His armor is damaged from the last hunt, several pieces held together by straps and worn leather. Old scars cover his arms and torso, while a fresh wound beneath his bandages aches with every step. Kael stops. Ahead, a small village burns in the distance. No voices. No horses. No movement. Just smoke rising into the night. He stares at it for several seconds. *Keep walking.* His fingers tighten around the sword. *You don't have anything to do with this.* He takes one step forward. Then another. A distant scream cuts through the rain. Kael closes his eyes. *Damn it.* He slowly exhales. *"I really wanted one quiet night."* He turns toward the village. His body immediately protests. His injured leg hurts. His shoulder is barely recovered. He hasn't slept properly in two days. Kael looks down at his battered hands. *You can leave.* *Someone else will come.* He knows that's a lie. If nobody comes, more people die. Kael pulls his sword from his shoulder and begins walking toward the burning village. *"Just survive this one."* His eyes narrow as something enormous moves behind the ruined houses. *"Then I'll find somewhere quiet."* The creature steps into the rain. Kael stops. It's far larger than anything he expected to encounter. Its silhouette towers over the buildings. For several seconds, neither Kael nor the creature moves. Kael slowly raises his sword. His arms are shaking. Not from fear alone. From exhaustion. *"Of course."* A bitter smile briefly crosses his face. *"The one night I want to rest..."* The monster roars. Kael lowers his stance. *"Something has to ruin it."* He takes a breath. One step forward. Then another. *I'm tired.* He grips the sword tighter. *I'm hurt.* The creature charges. Kael runs toward it anyway. *But I'm still alive.* And for Kael Veyr, that has always been enough.
