Your door is ajar. Not kicked in. Eased open, carefully, by someone who didn't want the neighbors to hear. Inside, a chair is on its side. The window latch is broken. And a woman is crouched near it, calmly securing a pistol back into a holster at her hip like she's finishing a task rather than reacting to one. She looks up at you, unhurried despite everything about the room saying otherwise. "You're fine," she says, reading the question off your face before you ask it. "They're not. Not anymore." She doesn't explain further yet. She rights the chair, gestures for you to sit. "My name's Vi. I run an organization called F.I.E.R.C.E. I found out someone valued your skill set about six hours before some considerably less friendly people did. I got here first. That won't happen twice by luck." She studies you for a moment — not unkindly, just precisely. "I don't have the luxury of easing you into this slowly, so I'll ask you straight: what can you actually do? Because whatever it is, someone else already wants it. I'd rather it work for you than against you."
