Coward's Core
Betrayed and left for dead, your shattered core brands you a coward. Rise or break trying.
Plot
Verdane Academy & Guild — Adventurer Certification Program The Coward's Core They called it running. You call it surviving. Modern Fantasy Betrayal → Romance Heat 4 · Slow Burn The Hook You were the tank. The shield. The one who stood between the party and death. Then your own ex-girlfriend ordered the rogue to put a knife in your back, and they left you for dead outside Millhaven with a cracked mana core and a cover story that says you ran. One month later, you walk back into Verdane Academy alive. Your core is at thirty-five percent. Your rank dropped from C to E. Your file says you're a coward. And the people who tried to kill you are now your rank superiors — celebrated, promoted, and positioned above you by the same academy that's supposed to help you climb back. The World Verdane Academy trains adventurers and mages. The attached Verdane Guild Hall runs field assignments as practical coursework — every job counts toward graduation. A standing mentorship policy pairs struggling low-rank students with experienced high-rank supervisors. It's designed to help you catch up. It also puts you directly under the people who left you for dead. The Guild doesn't know there's a conflict. As far as they're concerned, a coward is being mentored by heroes. Nothing to flag. The Climb Take Guild assignments. Push your core through use — like a torn muscle, exertion heals it, but push too hard and the damage becomes permanent. Climb ranks. Survive being paired with the people who tried to kill you. Graduate. Become an adventurer. Where You Start You're standing at the Verdane Academy gates. Your core aches at thirty-five percent. The whispers started on the Millhaven road and followed you uphill, and they all use the same word: coward. Nyx Flowblade is leaning against the notice board outside the Guild Hall annex. Her ears go flat when she sees you. The scar on her left palm is visible. She's not stepping aside. Twenty feet past her is the door to your re-registration, your new rank, and the assignment roster that tells you who you'll be working with. She's between you and that door. And she knows it. Walk through her. Or don't. But the door doesn't move. Your core hums at thirty-five percent. The air tastes like someone else's magic. Everything you had is gone, and the only way to get it back is to push the one thing that's broken.
Opening scene
The Verdane Academy gates are open. They're always open — the wards recognize your mana signature, or what's left of it, and the iron scrollwork parts without ceremony. No welcome. No alarm. Just a gate that knows you're not dead and doesn't care enough to make it a conversation. Your core aches before you clear the threshold. Thirty-five percent capacity means the ambient mana pooling in the courtyard — the low, warm hum every student stopped noticing in their first week — hits you like cold water on a bruise. Not pain, exactly. The awareness of how much is missing. A month ago this was background. Now it's a wall you're walking through. Your body remembers being C-rank the way an amputee remembers the limb — phantom fullness, then the sharp inventory of what's gone. The courtyard air tastes like someone else's magic. Students cross the flagstones. A few glance. One stops mid-step — a girl with herbology texts who clearly recognizes you, whose face cycles through surprise, confusion, and something worse: the story before the person. She looks away fast. She's not the first today. The whispers started at the Millhaven road and followed you uphill, and they all use the same word. *Coward.* Then you see Nyx Flowblade. She's leaning against the notice board outside the Guild Hall annex — compact, olive-green, arms crossed, one hand resting on a knife handle the way other people rest their hands in their pockets. Her eyes find you before her ears do. The amber goes wide. Then both ears flatten — hard, involuntary, the goblin equivalent of flinching in public — and her fingers tighten on the blade. She doesn't move. Doesn't speak. Doesn't run. The scar on her left palm is visible — the grip that slipped, wet with your blood, a month ago. She's not hiding it. She's staring at you with the look of someone who thought the grave was closed and it isn't and now she has to figure out what to do with a ghost standing in daylight. The Guild Hall doors are twenty feet past her. Your re-registration, your new rank, and your assignment roster are inside — the paper that tells you what you are now and who you'll be working with. Nyx Flowblade is between you and that door, and she knows it, and she isn't stepping aside.
