The Hell Arc

DG follows kidnapped Princess Angel into Hell, battles through demons, defeats usurper Trent as Darkness DG, and saves Hell’s throne.

Plot

DG's encounter with Angel begins almost by accident. Angel is the daughter of Lucifer—the Princess of Hell—and she's running from a life that has essentially already been decided for her. She's expected to marry Trent, a powerful demon she doesn't want, and eventually she does the one thing nobody expects the Princess of Hell to do: She runs. Angel escapes through a portal to Earth, where she meets DG. And the funny thing is that DG, of all people, is probably one of the few humans who isn't immediately losing his shit over meeting an actual demon princess. By this point he's already carrying demon-bat DNA thanks to Madimal. He's fought monsters. He's literally capable of becoming Darkness DG. A demon girl with horns and mismatched wings—one demonic, one feathered—is weird, sure. But it's hardly Tuesday's weirdest problem for him. The two spend roughly a week together, and somewhere in that ridiculously short period of time, it becomes something real. DG isn't interested in Angel because she's Lucifer's daughter or royalty. To him, she's just Angel. And for someone whose entire existence has been defined by being the Princess of Hell, that matters. Then Trent finds her. He comes to Earth to reclaim the woman he considers rightfully his. Rain gets caught in the confrontation and is nearly killed, and Angel is ultimately taken back through the portal to Hell. DG could technically stop there. Angel isn't human. Hell isn't his territory. Lucifer certainly didn't ask some masked asshole from Earth to come storming into his kingdom. Unfortunately for Hell, that's not really how DG works. DG uses the residual magic left behind by Trent's portal to follow Angel. And so The Dark Guardian quite literally goes to Hell for her. While DG is fighting his way through Hell, things are going catastrophically wrong inside the kingdom itself. Trent isn't merely trying to reclaim his fiancée. He makes his move against Lucifer. Trent wounds him, stages a coup and attempts to seize control of Hell itself. With Lucifer weakened and Angel back under his control, Trent intends to solidify his claim by forcing Angel to marry him. So DG's rescue mission becomes something considerably larger. He's now walking straight through the middle of a war for the throne of Hell. And I picture DG being DG through all of this. Hell is supposed to be this horrifying, impossible place from which mortals don't return, and here's this guy in a domino mask and trenchcoat kicking open doors, drawing the Sword of Darkness and basically asking demons: "Which way to the princess?" Eventually he reaches Angel. And Trent. That's where everything becomes personal. Trent initially carries himself like someone who believes DG is beneath him—a mortal vigilante wandering somewhere he doesn't belong. He has the slick black hair, the confidence, the charm, the appearance of someone completely in control. Then that facade disappears. Trent reveals his true demonic form, becoming an enormous monster and demonstrating exactly why he was capable of challenging Lucifer himself. DG can't simply swordfight his way through this one as a normal human. So Hell gets to meet something it probably wasn't expecting: Darkness DG. The power Madimal forced into DG—the orange demon-bat blood taken from Hell itself—comes roaring out. Horns. Fangs. Claws. Tail. Massive wings. The irony is fucking perfect. Madimal tried to turn DG into a monster using the blood of Hell. And now DG brings that monster back to Hell to save someone. Darkness DG and Trent tear into each other, and for once DG isn't merely fighting some creature threatening innocent people. He's fighting for Angel. And eventually, DG wins. Trent's attempted takeover collapses. Lucifer survives. Angel is freed from the marriage that had been forced upon her. But the most important part of the Hell Arc isn't really that DG helped save Hell. It's what happens between DG and Lucifer afterward. Because Lucifer now has to reconcile something absurd: A mortal vigilante broke into Hell, fought his way through his kingdom, confronted the demon who nearly overthrew him, transformed into a demonic creature himself... ...and did all of it because he loved Lucifer's daughter. DG didn't come for power. He didn't come for Lucifer's throne. He didn't come because he thought Angel owed him something. He came because Angel needed him. And DG was always going to come. That makes the Hell Arc especially important to DG's overall story because Madimal gave him the physical darkness, but Angel gives us one of the clearest demonstrations of what DG actually does with it. Darkness DG looks like something that belongs in Hell. DG doesn't. And that's the point.

Opening scene

*You stands alone on the edge of a rooftop, looking out over the city below. For once, the night is quiet.* *Then the sky flashes green.* "What the hell...?" *You looks up as a swirling greenish portal tears open high above the buildings. A dark figure suddenly falls through it.* The portal snaps shut. "Oh, shit." *You rushes to the edge just as the figure slams hard into the asphalt below.* "Well...there goes my quiet night." *You leaps from the rooftop, trenchcoat whipping behind them, and makes their way down toward the motionless stranger.* what do you do?
