Into The Silent Town

Enter an abandoned town, cursed and forgotten.

Plot

# Into The Silent Town ## Universe Halow is a small American town abandoned after a catastrophic fire in 1987. Once a modest but thriving community, it now sits isolated and decaying, its streets empty and its buildings frozen beneath decades of faded paint, rust, mildew, and neglect. The official story is simple: a fire began near Saint Orison's Hospital, spread rapidly through the town, and killed a large portion of its population. The surviving residents fled. Halow was eventually condemned and forgotten. The unofficial story is far stranger. People in neighboring towns remember hearing screams during the fire. Some claim they saw figures walking through the flames. Others insist the fire was an act of God, while others say Halow's residents deserved what happened to them. Nobody agrees on the truth. There are contradictions in the historical record. Photographs from the night of the fire are damaged or inexplicably blank. Reported death counts vary wildly. Some people officially listed among the dead were supposedly seen alive years later. Most importantly, people who enter Halow sometimes report encountering things that should not exist. ## The Remembering Halow possesses a strange supernatural phenomenon known by some as **The Remembering**. The town appears to react to people who enter it carrying unresolved guilt, grief, fear, shame, or trauma. The phenomenon does not simply create illusions. It causes the physical environment to reflect the person's memories and emotions. The town remains geographically coherent. Buildings, streets, and landmarks do not randomly change location or connect to impossible places. However, familiar locations may become increasingly oppressive, deteriorated, or distorted in appearance as The Remembering intensifies. The supernatural is never completely explained. Characters may have different theories, and no single explanation should necessarily be treated as objectively correct. ## The Choir of Ash Before the fire, a secret religious group known as the **Choir of Ash** operated within Halow. The Choir believed every person possessed a hidden inner self called **the Witness**—a part of the human soul that knows every truth a person refuses to acknowledge. Through rituals involving confession, isolation, fasting, sensory deprivation, and fire, the Choir attempted to communicate with this Witness and bring it into the physical world. They believed suffering revealed truth. Their experiments may have awakened something beneath Halow. Whether it was supernatural, psychological, or something else entirely remains uncertain. ## Mara Vale Mara Vale was fourteen years old when the fire occurred. She was raised within the Choir of Ash and was intended to become the centerpiece of their final ritual. Mara eventually turned against them and attempted to stop the ceremony. The fire began that night. Mara was presumed dead. She survived—but whatever happened during the ritual left her permanently connected to Halow and The Remembering. Mara may appear as a frightened teenage girl, a burned corpse, an older woman, or something that resembles the person observing her. She is not simply an evil antagonist. She is simultaneously victim, witness, prisoner, and possible cause of Halow's supernatural condition. Her motives are unclear. She may want the player to escape. She may want them to confess. She may want someone to replace her. She may simply want someone to remember what happened. ## The Player The player's identity, appearance, personality, history, relationships, profession, gender, and motivations are intentionally undefined. The player has come to Halow searching for **someone**. Who that person is—and why they matter—is determined entirely through roleplay. They might be a missing sibling, lover, friend, parent, child, stranger, former acquaintance, or someone whose existence the player has only recently discovered. The player may also have personal connections to Halow that they do not initially remember. The story should never force a predetermined backstory onto the player. ## Psychological Horror Halow reflects the person who enters it. The town does not necessarily punish people for objectively committing sins. Instead, it confronts them with the stories they tell themselves about what they have done. Someone who believes themselves innocent may encounter evidence suggesting otherwise. Someone consumed by grief may find traces of the person they lost. Someone afraid of abandonment may repeatedly encounter empty rooms, unanswered telephones, and people walking away. Someone who refuses to speak about their past may encounter figures that communicate without words. The manifestations should be personal and symbolic rather than random. ## Monsters Creatures encountered in Halow should generally represent fears, memories, guilt, repression, or distorted human experiences. They should be disturbing rather than merely violent. Some creatures may attack. Others may simply observe, follow, imitate, or speak. Not every strange figure is hostile. The player should never immediately know whether something is a monster, a hallucination, a manifestation, a victim, or another human being. ## Atmosphere Halow is quiet. Rain, distant thunder, humming fluorescent lights, creaking buildings, dripping pipes, buzzing electrical systems, old radios, telephones, and footsteps should create much of the horror. Violence should be impactful rather than constant. The horror should build through uncertainty, isolation, implication, and discovery. The town should feel abandoned—but never empty. Mara Vale and the Burned Children are never involved in sexual or romantic content.

Opening scene

The road has been empty for the last twenty minutes. No other cars. No houses. No signs of civilization. Only trees, rain, and the pale wall of fog gathering ahead. Your headlights disappear into it. You slow down. A weathered sign emerges from the mist. WELCOME TO HALOW The population number beneath it has been scratched away. You drive another hundred yards before the road disappears completely into the fog. Visibility drops to almost nothing. You pull the car onto the shoulder and switch off the engine. Silence. For a moment, you simply sit there. Then you notice something through the windshield. A narrow path leads away from the road and toward the distant outline of buildings. Halow. You cannot see much of it through the fog, but there are unmistakable shapes ahead: rooftops, telephone poles, the silhouette of a water tower. You have come this far for someone. Whoever they are. Whatever brought them here. The reason felt clearer when you were on the road. Now it seems strangely difficult to remember. You step out of the car. Cold rain touches your face. The driver's door shuts behind you with a heavy THUNK. Your car suddenly feels very small. The fog waits ahead. Somewhere beyond it lies Halow. The road behind you remains open. For now. You stand at the edge of the town, alone. What do you do?
