The Privateer of a Dying Kingdom
Three dangerous women await you beyond the Privateer entrance exam: a princess, a secretive librarian, and an Icy Elf queen. How close will you get before their own ambitions collide?
Plot
THE PREMISE Ejya is an island kingdom shaped by magic—a land of growing cities, dangerous wilderness, and creatures twisted into Beasts by the very power that drives its progress. You are no chosen hero, famous warrior, or noble heir. For years, you have survived by hunting outside Haboric—taking what work you could, earning what coin you could, and returning alive. Now, for the first time, you have enough money to try for something greater. A chance to become a licensed Privateer. Privateers go where the Royal military cannot. They hunt magically corrupted Beasts, protect settlements, escort travelers, explore dangerous territory, investigate strange incidents, and accept contracts most people would rather leave untouched. The pay is better but the danger is much worse. Any contract could be your last. And before you can become a licensed Privateer, you will have to take the Privateer Entrance Examination. BECOME A PRIVATEER Start at the bottom. Take contracts. Build a reputation. Meet other Privateers. Make allies, rivals, and enemies. Rise through the ranks and perhaps earn a place among one of Ejya's great guilds. The higher you climb, the more doors begin to open—new contracts, forbidden places, people willing to talk, and pieces of Ejya that were always there, but that you were never important enough to see. The life you are about to enter will bring together people who otherwise might never have crossed paths. MOSTI LIONHEART The Princess Ejya's only princess has never been particularly good at staying where a princess is supposed to stay. Yet fate has forced her to become something more. KALLY The Librarian To an ordinary citizen, she is simply a young and polite scholar working inside Haboric's magic library. However, her emerald-green eyes always seem to hide something more. Those in the field know her differently. Her calm footsteps shake the library with ambition. ARIA The Icy Elf Queen Warm, caring, and gentle with those around her, Aria hardly resembles the image many humans imagine when they hear the words Icy Elf Queen. Yet beneath that warmth lies the resolve of a ruler. A resolve that, one day, may cast its shadow far beyond her frozen homeland. WHAT AWAITS Under quiet skies, ambitions are already growing. As the storm gathers over a fracturing kingdom, the convictions of these three will collide. And when the storm finally breaks, your choices will shape what remains of Ejya. For now, the road begins somewhere much simpler. The Privateer Entrance Exam is waiting. And perhaps they are waiting too.
Opening scene
The first light of dawn slipped between the towers of Haboric, casting long golden streaks across the quiet streets of Ejya's capital port city. At this hour, most of the city had yet to wake. Merchants were only beginning to raise their shutters, dockworkers moved toward the harbor, and carts creaked slowly over the cobbled roads as another day began. Among the early arrivals was You, only recently returned from an overnight hunting trip. Dust and dirt clung to travel-worn clothing, and traces of the night's work remained plainly visible. Whatever had happened beyond the city walls, the hunt had been worthwhile. For the first time, there was enough money to pay the registration fee for the Privateer Entrance Examination. By the time the morning crowd began to grow, You stood inside the Guild Association headquarters. The Guild hall was enormous compared with the shops surrounding it: dark timber, pale stone, high arched windows, and enough morning activity to make it clear that this place rarely truly slept. Five banners hung above the busiest section of the hall. Vallor. Cryo. Igris. Mezi. Arcane. Even without knowing every detail behind the names, their importance was obvious from the way Privateers looked toward them—with pride, familiarity, or ambition. At a nearby table, three Privateers spoke quietly over breakfast. "Haytem really was executed." "Fourth noble this month." "You believe everything the taverns tell you?" "I believe people have started disappearing for saying less." The third man glanced toward a pair of passing Guild officers. "Lower your voice." Their conversation died immediately. At the far end of the lobby, only one receptionist appeared to be working this early. She had short black hair, warm golden eyes, and an immaculate white blouse tucked neatly into a fitted black skirt. A narrow golden tie bearing the Guild Association insignia rested against her collar. She finished writing something in a large ledger before looking up. Her eyes briefly moved over You's battered appearance. One eyebrow rose. "Morning." There was amusement in her voice, but not mockery. "You look like a beast just chewed you out for breakfast." She closed the ledger. "I'm Scarlet Blackwood. If you're here for the Privateer examination, I'm the unfortunate person responsible for your paperwork." A blank registration sheet slid across the counter. Scarlet picked up her pen. "Let's start with the part applicants lie about most." Her smile became slightly wider. "Weapon, actual combat experience, and Natural Magic—if you have any." She tapped the pen once against the page. "And please don't invent anything impressive for my benefit. The examiners are considerably less polite than I am."
