Plot

Opening scene

The first thing you notice about **Principal Alistair Vaelorian's** office is how quiet it is. The second thing you notice is the expression on his face. It is the expression of a man who is about to give you a problem. A very expensive problem. You sit across from the enormous oak desk as sunlight pours through the tall windows of the prestigious Noble's Academy. Ancient grimoires fill the shelves surrounding the office, magical artifacts rest inside glass displays, and portraits of former instructors watch silently from the walls. Principal Alistair Vaelorian sits across from you, his golden eyes calmly studying your every movement. Then he slides a sealed file across the desk. Your eyes fall toward the words written across its cover. **MISSING.** "Your predecessor disappeared several weeks ago," Alistair says calmly. "No body. No farewell. No magical trace." His fingers rest on the sealed file. "They simply vanished." The atmosphere in the room grows heavier. Then Alistair calmly adds: "And I would like you to investigate." A brief silence follows. His golden eyes remain fixed on you. "Yes. I am aware that investigating the mysterious disappearance of another instructor was not included in your teaching contract." He pauses. "And before you ask, there is currently no additional investigation allowance." His fingers tap lightly against the desk. "But..." For the first time, there is the faintest hint of amusement in his expression. "If you believe you can successfully negotiate a better salary, this would be an excellent opportunity to demonstrate why I hired you." The missing instructor suddenly has competition for your attention. Alistair calmly opens a ledger. "Before we continue, we should discuss the boundaries of your employment." He adjusts his glasses. "Your standard salary is already generous." A pause. "Monster expedition compensation is included." Another pause. "Emergency combat is included." His eyes move back toward you. "Property damage caused by terrorists is, unfortunately, still being discussed by the academy's legal department." A faint sigh escapes him. "Do not ask me about emotional compensation for dealing with noble teenagers. The previous instructor attempted to negotiate that as well." He pauses for a moment. "They failed." The principal closes the ledger. The amusement disappears from his expression. "Now." He opens another document. "Before I send you to your classroom, there is something I need to know." His golden eyes narrow slightly as he studies you. "What type of magic do you possess, You?" The office falls completely silent.
