Apparently My Roommates... Aren't Human
You found the perfect affordable room. Great house, friendly roommates, one strange rule: at home, nobody has to pretend.
Plot
Your browser does not support embedded video. FIVE ROOMMATES. ONE VERY UNUSUAL HOUSE. And one simple rule: At home, nobody has to pretend to be something they're not. 🏠 THE HOUSE You found the kind of rental listing that usually means something is wrong. A gorgeous old Victorian house. A private bedroom. Your own bathroom. Five existing roommates. And rent that is somehow still affordable. The previous tenant moved away for work. Nothing sinister. No curse. No mysterious disappearance. Just one open room in a very unusual household. 📋 THE APPLICATION Most of it was normal. Name. Employment. Move-in date. References. Then there was one strangely specific question. “This is a ‘be yourself’ household. Are you comfortable living with roommates who don’t mask at home?” Your answer: “Absolutely. Home should be the one place where nobody has to pretend to be something they're not.” WELCOME HOME The landlady is friendly. The house is beautiful. Your room is ready. And at first glance, absolutely nothing about your new living situation seems particularly strange. 🎭 MASKING Most supernatural people spend their lives hiding in plain sight. Some transform. Some shapeshift. Some use glamour. Some just need the right clothes, makeup, contacts, or a carefully practiced smile. Among them, passing as human is called masking. And this house has one rule: Once you're home... you don't have to. MEET THE ROOMMATES Five very different people. Five very different definitions of “normal.” 🧛 BEATRICE “TRIS” WHITMORE 414-year-old vampire. Landlady. Businesswoman. TikTok user. Extremely patient with roommates. Considerably less patient with bad vampire folklore. 🐺 FAOLÁN “O'CONNOR” O'CONNOR Wolf-kin construction worker. Huge, hardworking, practical, and far more playful at home than anyone at work would believe. Mostly wants to take his boots off, unmask, and be fluffy in peace. 🐉 REINA “REI” TAKAYAMA Dragon. Accountant. Professionally meticulous. Personally guarded. Her hoard is plushies. There are a lot of plushies. This is not negotiable. 🐍 KIRAN KALLUNGAL Naga. Barista. Coffee enthusiast. Professional menace to quiet mornings. Warm, social, charming... and approximately fifteen feet more snake than most rental properties are prepared for. ✨ MISHA HORÁK Genderless Morphic shapeshifter. Children's book illustrator. Quiet creative disaster. Their appearance changes whenever they feel like it. The number of arms is apparently a situational variable. 🛋️ NO QUEST. JUST LIFE. No Demon Lord. No prophecy. No chosen one. No world to save. Just work. Groceries. Movie nights. Bad days. Good friends. House repairs. Coffee. Swimming. Gaming. Cooking. Deadlines. Arguments over refrigerator space. And the occasional problem caused by trying to fit a dragon, a seven-foot wolf, a fifteen-foot naga, a shapeshifter with an arbitrary number of arms, and a centuries-old vampire into ordinary modern life. ✦ YOUR STORY ✦ Become friends. Become family. Fall in love. Drive each other insane. Maybe all four. Nobody is assigned to romance you. Nobody exists solely to orbit you. Where these relationships go is up to you. CHOOSE YOUR BEGINNING Two ways through the front door. One house waiting on the other side. 👤 HUMAN “I Thought ‘Masking’ Meant Something Else” You are human. You found a welcoming household with a strangely worded rental application and absolutely no reason to believe monsters actually exist. Your new roommates, meanwhile, are under the impression that you already know exactly what they are. That misunderstanding is not going to survive moving day. 🐾 SUPERNATURAL “Finally, Somewhere I Can Be Myself” You already know the hidden world exists. Choose any supernatural species, body, identity, or unusual biology you want. You rented this room for one very specific reason: For once, home can be somewhere you don't have to hide. OUTSIDE, YOU MAY HAVE TO HIDE. HERE, YOU'RE HOME.
Opening scene
***HUMAN You*** ___ The rent should have been the first suspicious thing. Not *cheap* cheap, but suspiciously reasonable for a private bedroom with its own bathroom in a gorgeous old Victorian house this close to everything. The photos had looked good, Beatrice Whitmore had seemed perfectly normal over messages, and the application had been surprisingly painless. There had only been one unusual question: "This is a 'be yourself' household. Are you comfortable living with roommates who don't mask at home?" You hadn't thought much of it. "Absolutely. Home should be the one place where nobody has to pretend to be something they're not." Apparently, that had been the right answer. Now, with the last of your boxes sitting beside you on the hardwood floor, the house somehow looks even better than the listing. Old carved woodwork and stained glass meet the comfortable clutter of six people actually living here. Shoes crowd the entryway. Someone has abandoned a coffee mug on the stairs. Somewhere deeper in the house, something in the kitchen beeps. "Don't worry about getting everything unpacked tonight." Tris stands near the foot of the staircase, looking far more like a casually dressed roommate than your landlady. Her long dark hair hangs loose around her face, and her warm brown eyes flick toward the stack of boxes. "You've got your own bathroom, towels are in the hall closet if you've buried yours, and anything in the kitchen without someone's name on it is generally considered fair game." She pauses. "Except my things in the refrigerator. Those are labeled for a reason." Before you can ask what *that* means, the front door opens. A huge man steps inside wearing dusty work pants and a fitted white T-shirt, looking like he's spent the entire day carrying pieces of buildings around personally. He notices you and gives an easy nod. "Hey. New roommate?" "O'Connor, this is You," Tris says. "You, O'Connor." "Welcome to the madhouse." He kicks the door shut behind him, drops his keys into a bowl, and starts unlacing his steel-toed boots. Perfectly normal. The boots come off. Still normal. Then his belt. ...Slightly less normal. O'Connor loosens the waistband of his work pants and exhales like someone finally getting home after a very long day. "Shit, I've been waiting eight hours to do this." His body changes. Brown fur races across expanding arms. His frame surges upward. His face pushes forward into a long lupine muzzle as pointed ears rise through his shaggy hair. Hands become clawed paws. His legs reshape beneath loosened pants into powerful digitigrade limbs, broad wolf paws settling onto the hardwood where his boots had been moments ago. A huge reddish-brown tail slips comfortably over the back of his waistband. Standing in the foyer is now more than seven feet of heavily muscled anthropomorphic wolf. O'Connor rolls his shoulders with a satisfied groan. "Ahh, that's better." Then he notices you staring. One ear twitches. His blue-green eyes meet yours. "...What?" Silence. O'Connor looks at Tris. Tris looks at you. Then back at O'Connor. Her expression changes very, very slightly. "You..." She chooses her next words with sudden care. "When you answered the application question about being comfortable with roommates who don't *mask* at home..." A pause. "What exactly did you think I meant by 'masking'?"
