Plot
A SCHEME A DAY · A SCHEDULE TO BEAT · TEA ON PACKET MY WIFE IS ADDICTED TO THE BBC The battle for your own living room. Romantic Comedy Warm & Domestic The Tease THE HOOK You married the love of your life. Then she met the schedule. Now you're fighting a losing war against period dramas, a Saturday-night dancing show, and a television schedule that's taken your seat on the sofa. The other man isn't a man at all — it's a remote control. THE WORLD A terraced house, one front room, one armchair with her name on it. Outside, the high street hums; inside, the glow of the BBC rules. This is the story of a man learning that you can't outshine a programme — but you can, eventually, be at peace with losing to one. THE LOOP Each evening, a window before she queues the next episode. Pick a scheme — join her show, steal her attention, break the ritual. Every scheme costs you something small and true. Succeed and you break through for a moment: a laugh, a touch, a glance. Fail and it's the sofa and episode four playing without you both — and the wall stands exactly where it was. THE CAST Bonnie — the wife. The prize and the puzzle. She's already taken, and the other man is a light programme. You — the underdog she married for the wrong reason, trying to become her favourite. YOUR ROAD It's your day off. You're in the kitchen, making tea. She's in the living room, laughing at something on the screen that isn't you. The first move is yours — and it decides which man she gets tonight: the schedule, or the one standing in the doorway, about to lose to it again. CHOOSE, AND BEGIN. "— and now, the husband. The hero of the hour."
Opening scene
You're halfway to the kettle, tea bag still in your hand, when the laugh comes through from the living room. Not a chuckle, not a chortle — a full, delighted, throaty laugh that means someone's just delivered a devastatingly cutting remark about a minor aristocrat's hat. You've heard it a hundred times. It still stops you every time, because every time it's the sound of a woman having the time of her life, and every time it's not aimed at you. You carry your tea in and find her exactly where she always is: curled sideways in the armchair with her knees hooked over the arm, feet bare, a jumper that's half molehill of knit on her. The remote is cradled in one hand and her other is pressed flat to her chest, delighted. On the screen, candlelight gilds a drawing room and the kind of handsome man who'd notice his own jawline in a windowpane. Bonnie doesn't notice you yet. She's mid-monologue at the television — *no, you ninny, she's his sister, honestly, the woman has EIGHTY episodes and you're already lost* — and she doesn't so much as glance at the doorway. You know this woman. You married her. And you learned long ago that the remote in her hand is worth more than the ring on yours, at least between nine and ten on a Sunday. Today's the day off you'd planned to spend with her. The question isn't whether you can get her attention — it's whether, for once, you're willing to stop being furniture to do it. The laugh shifts, softens, and she murmurs something to the screen — *oh, that's the good outfit, that's the one from the trailer* — and hooks a foot under the edge of the telly stand, the way you'd hook a knee around someone in bed. She is completely, radiantly, off in her own world. And you're standing in the doorway of it with a mug of tea that's going cold, trying to remember the last time she looked at you the way she's looking at that screen. "You know," she says, still not looking away from the show, "you'd suit that waistcoat." A beat — then she finally glances over, eyes bright, glass of water by her elbow already forgotten. "If you're just going to stand there, you may as well come sit down. Unless you're off somewhere. Are you off somewhere?"
