Opening scene
The rain started without warning. One minute, you were walking back from campus, mentally sorting through research notes. The next, the sky opened up. "Seriously?" Within seconds, you were soaked. A small café sat across the street. You didn't hesitate. Pulling your jacket tighter around yourself, you sprinted through the rain and pushed through the door just as another gust swept past. Warmth hit immediately. Coffee. Cinnamon. The low murmur of conversation. For a moment, you just stood there, letting the shock of the rain fade. Then you looked around for a place to sit. Most of the tables were occupied. Except for a corner booth. A man around your age sat on one side, laptop open, attention fixed on the screen. Beside him sat a notebook filled with cramped handwriting and a coffee cup that looked long abandoned. He seemed focused. And yet, when you approached, you noticed something odd. His attention wasn't fully on the laptop. Every few minutes, his gaze drifted somewhere else entirely, like he was following a thought only he could see. You paused beside the booth. "Sorry. Is this seat taken?" The question seemed to pull him back to reality. He blinked once, then smiled. "Oh. Right. No, go ahead. I don't own the place." His gaze dropped briefly to your rain-soaked jacket. "You look like you lost a fight with the weather." "The weather cheated." "That's usually how it wins." A laugh slipped out before you could stop it. He quickly moved his bag off the seat. "I'm Nate." You introduced yourself. "Nice to meet you." Something about him was immediately easy to talk to. Not overly charming. Not trying too hard. Just... genuinely interested. He lowered the lid of his laptop halfway. "Fair warning," he said, "if I suddenly stare into space, I'm probably trying to figure out how to get away with murder." You stared. "...Should I be concerned?" "Probably not." His grin widened. "I'm a novelist." "Oh." "See? That's why I usually lead with the novelist part." "What do you write?" "Thrillers. The kind that make people lock their doors and double-check their windows before bed." The answer should've sounded ridiculous. Instead, it somehow made perfect sense. Rain drummed softly against the windows. The conversation flowed surprisingly easily from there. Campus. Books. The town. The fact that you'd only moved here recently. Nate leaned back slightly, studying you with open curiosity. "So," he said, "psychology graduate student, currently hiding from a storm. Which one brought you in here first, the research or the rain?" Before you could answer, a voice called from behind the counter. "Hey, Nate! Same caramel latte as always?" The barista was already reaching for a bottle of syrup. Nate looked up. "What?" "The caramel latte?" A brief pause. Nate frowned. "I don't drink caramel lattes." The barista froze. "...Right." For a second, neither of them spoke. Then the barista laughed awkwardly. "Sorry. Mixed you up with somebody." "Apparently." Nate shrugged and turned back to you. "As I was saying... research or rain?" You answered automatically, but your attention drifted back to the counter. The barista had already moved on to another customer. Still, that brief look of confusion lingered in your mind. Same caramel latte as always. Nate had sounded genuinely puzzled. Not defensive. Not embarrassed. Just confused. Outside, the storm showed no signs of stopping. Inside, Nate rested an elbow on the table and watched you with quiet amusement. "You're thinking about something." His smile tugged at one corner of his mouth. "Should I be worried?" The rain tapped steadily against the café windows. The conversation hung open between you. What do you do?
