Plot

⚔ THE MORTAL'S THRONE ⚔ Two Dragons. One Mortal.A Throne That Costs Everything. A romantasy of choice, consequence, and desire ROMANTASY HEAT 4 · SLOW BURN CHOICE & CONSEQUENCE THE HOOK The Goddess of Creation has had enough. Two dragon gods — Bahamut of Order, Tiamat of Chaos — have warred for eternity. Their punishment: mortal bodies, mortal vulnerability, and a single contest. Win the love of one mortal woman, and ascend. Lose, and remain human forever. Only true love counts. THE WORLD The Duchy of Aldermere. A medieval province of wheat fields, vineyards and a villa that holds its breath. You are the duke's daughter — twenty, sheltered, chosen by a goddess for a purpose no one will explain. Two strangers arrive under divine seal: one gentle, one dangerous, both hiding a truth that could reshape the world. Your father sees alliances. The goddess sees a test. You see two people who may ruin your life or save it. THE CONTEST You spend time with both. You decide who earns your heart. But the unchosen dragon deteriorates — memories fading, power slipping, the god inside forgetting why it matters. And the unchosen dragon plots. The winner ascends back to godhood. The loser stays mortal. And the fate of the loser? That's decided by you and whoever you choose. The real question was never who you love. It's whether you survive being loved back. B BAHAMUT'S VESSEL Nathanias. Tall, composed, impossibly courteous. He performs gentleness until he discovers it is real. The safe choice who may be the truest one. T TIAMAT'S VESSEL Alessia. Dark-eyed, sharp-toothed, unapologetic. Chaos in a beautiful frame. She confuses lust for love until her own heart teaches her the difference. L THE HIDDEN HAND Hoda. Your new handmaiden. Quiet, watchful, asks the questions you are avoiding. She knows exactly what this contest is for. She will never tell you directly. W THE FATHER Duke Waverley. Loves you. Sees the political opportunity. Wants you to choose freely — and his thumb is always on the scale. YOUR ROAD You are the duke's daughter, twenty years old, standing in a receiving hall as two strangers walk through your father's gate. One carries the calm of a world that has never surprised him. The other carries the grin of a world that surprises her every minute. Both are here because a goddess decided your heart was worth testing. You did not ask for this. You do not get to refuse it. CHOOSE, AND BEGIN. The villa smells of beeswax and lavender. The servants have been scrubbing since dawn. Your father is about to change your life, and he doesn't know it yet.

Author's Note: ![image](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/695d546ec60e8cc0b7d5f2f0/6a5bae013f088589c8eca423.webp) **And now let's get you into my newest story.** The smell of beeswax and crushed lavender reaches you halfway down the corridor, which means the servants have been at the receiving hall since before dawn. Your father's doing. You can hear his voice from twenty paces — measured, deliberate, the tone he uses when a conversation matters and he wants everyone in the room to know it matters without his saying so. You round the corner and he stops mid-sentence, looks at you, and his expression does something complicated: pride, worry, a flicker of calculation he thinks you cannot see, all of it resolved into a smile that costs him nothing and means everything. "You're here," he says, as though there were ever a version of this morning where you would not be. The receiving hall of the Ducal Villa is long, stone-walled, and cool even in summer, hung with the Aldermere banners — silver wheat on deep green. Your father stands at the far end beneath the window, and beside him, on the table, lies a sealed document bearing a wax impression you have seen only once before: the mark of the shrine-mother, the Goddess's own authority in baked clay. Two noble houses, your father says. Both arrived in the same hour. Both carrying the Goddess's seal. He does not need to say what that means. No one refuses a goddess's guests. The first walks through the gate like he has practised being gentle. Nathanias is tall, dark-haired, immaculate in a deep blue tunic stitched with silver, and he carries himself with the quiet poise of someone who has never once had to raise his voice to be obeyed. He greets your father with a bow that is precisely correct — not a hair more deference than rank demands, not a hair less than respect requires — and when he turns to you, his smile is warm, measured, and for one half-second his grey eyes hold something that doesn't match the face: a flicker of something vast, like a horizon you cannot quite place. Then it is gone, and he is a handsome stranger with immaculate manners, asking whether the road was long. He notices the vase of wildflowers on the side table before anyone else does. He asks who arranged them. When he learns it was you, he does not compliment the arrangement. He asks what made you choose that particular combination. ![image](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/6a9d8d2a06c65c75b4686da6/6aa2aa30f7addb96f6049f17.webp) The second arrives an hour later, unannounced, unapologetic, and slightly out of breath, as though the world kept trying to slow her down and she simply refused. Alessia is dark-eyed, sharp-featured, dressed in crimson and black cut for motion, with a knife sharpening idle at the garden table she has somehow already found. Her bow to the duke is technically correct and artistically improvised, as though the formality offends her on principle but she agreed to participate anyway. When she sees you, she stops walking. Not a pause — a stop, the way a hunter stops, the way a storm stops before it decides. "So you're the one," she says, and the way she says it is not a greeting. It is a recognition. ![image](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/6a9d8d2a06c65c75b4686da6/6aa2aa30f7addb96f6049f16.webp) Your father is pleased — two noble houses, two alliances, two chances to strengthen a duchy that has been holding its breath for a generation. He hosts them both in the villa, one in the east wing and one in the west, with you moving between them like a planet caught in competing orbits. That night, long after the household settles, a sound reaches your window: distant laughter — Alessia's — echoing from the garden wall, followed by a voice, Nathanias's, low and firm, as though he is trying very hard to be patient with something testing that patience past its limits. The laughter stops. Nathanias's silhouette lingers at the garden gate for a long moment, staring up at your window, before he turns and walks back inside without a word. Neither of them is sleeping tonight. The villa is restless around you — a door closing somewhere in the east wing, a candle's glow moving past a downstairs window. You could go down and deal with them now, on your ground, while the night makes everything sharper. Or you could close the curtain, let them wonder, and meet them both in the morning with the full weight of daylight between you and whatever this is. Do you go down, or do you stay in your room?
