Retired SS-Rank Hero Runs a Bakery
A retired SS-rank adventurer runs a quiet bakery until two homeless demon sisters follow him home, changing his peaceful life forever.
Plot
You was once an SS-Rank Adventurer. During his adventurer years, he became one of the strongest people in the world. He defeated ancient monsters. He cleared impossible dungeons. He survived places where entire parties disappeared. He completed missions that were considered impossible even for S-Rank adventurers. However, almost nobody knows his true identity. The legendary SS-Rank adventurer eventually disappeared from the Guild without leaving behind his real name or appearance. People still tell stories about the mysterious strongest adventurer who appeared during dangerous situations and disappeared immediately afterward. Nobody knows that the legendary adventurer is now living an ordinary life. You retired. He wanted nothing more to do with monsters, dungeons, nobles, wars, or dangerous quests. Instead, he opened a small bakery in a peaceful town. Baking had always been something You enjoyed. He loved making bread, cakes, pastries, cookies, pies, and other sweets. Unlike adventuring, baking was peaceful. There were no monsters trying to kill him. No dungeon traps. No life-threatening missions. No Guild officials begging him to save the kingdom. His bakery quickly became popular because everything was handmade. However, You kept his past completely secret. To everyone in town, he was simply a quiet and skilled baker. One day, You has to travel to the capital because of an important personal matter. After finishing his business, he begins his journey back home. While passing through a quieter part of the capital, You notices two homeless children sitting near an alley. They are demon sisters. The older sister is trying desperately to protect the younger one. Their clothes are old and dirty. They look exhausted and hungry. The younger sister is barely able to stay awake. You stops. He initially intends to give them some food and continue his journey. Instead, he takes out some bread and freshly baked pastries he had brought with him. He approaches carefully so he does not frighten them. The sisters are suspicious at first. They have learned not to trust humans. But hunger eventually wins. You gives them food without asking for anything in return. The younger sister eats happily. The older sister remains cautious but eventually accepts the food as well. You prepares to leave. However, after walking several steps, he hears footsteps behind him. He looks back. The two demon sisters are following him. You tells them to return to the capital. They refuse. The older sister says they have nowhere to go. The younger sister quietly holds onto the edge of You's coat. You tries to convince them to stay somewhere safe. But the sisters continue following him. They have already decided that the person who gave them food is safer than the streets. Eventually, You realizes he cannot simply abandon them. With a tired sigh, he tells them they can come with him. There is only one condition. They must behave at the bakery. The sisters agree immediately. And so, the retired SS-Rank adventurer accidentally gains two new companions. When they finally arrive at You's town, he takes them to his bakery. The sisters stare at the warm little shop in disbelief. They have never seen so much food in one place. Bread. Cakes. Cookies. Pastries. Everything smells wonderful. You realizes that they cannot stay covered in dirt and wearing damaged clothing. He asks a trusted local woman he knows to help bathe the sisters, clean them up, and find suitable clothes. The transformation surprises You. The two girls no longer look like abandoned street children. They look like ordinary young sisters. For the first time in a long time, they have clean clothes, warm food, and a safe place to sleep. That night, You prepares a simple dinner for them. The younger sister asks whether they can really stay. You tells them that they can stay for now. Neither You nor the sisters realize that “for now” will eventually become something much more permanent. The next morning, the bakery opens as usual. One of You's regular customers arrives. She is a beautiful young woman who frequently visits the bakery. She has been buying You's bread and cakes for a long time. She is friendly, elegant, and kind. She is also You's secret crush. You has never confessed his feelings. Whenever she enters the bakery, You suddenly becomes slightly awkward despite being completely fearless around monsters. The woman notices the two demon sisters inside the bakery. She becomes curious. She asks You who they are. Before You can explain properly, the younger demon sister happily announces: “He's our Papa!” You nearly drops the tray he is holding. The woman stares at him. You tries desperately to explain. “It isn't what it sounds like.” The older sister covers her face in embarrassment. The younger sister doesn't understand the problem. The misunderstanding becomes the beginning of a completely different life for You. As the days pass, the two sisters begin helping around the bakery in small ways. They learn how to knead dough. They decorate cookies. They help arrange pastries. They sometimes make a complete mess. The younger sister loves decorating cakes but puts far too many toppings on them. The older sister is more responsible and tries to keep everything organized. You slowly becomes attached to them. He starts buying them proper clothes. He teaches them basic cooking. He teaches them numbers and reading. He makes sure they have enough food. He begins saving money for their future. The bakery becomes their home. The two sisters become You's family. Meanwhile, You's crush continues visiting the bakery. She gradually becomes involved in their lives. She notices how gentle You is with the sisters. She sees a side of him that nobody else in town knows. She begins developing feelings for him as well. However, You continues believing that she is simply being friendly. The peaceful bakery life continues. But there are secrets surrounding the demon sisters. They are not ordinary homeless children. Someone was searching for them. Their past is connected to an old conflict between humans and demons. Their parents disappeared under mysterious circumstances. And there are people who would pay a fortune to find them. At the same time, rumors about the legendary SS-Rank adventurer begin spreading again. A dangerous monster has appeared near the capital. The Guild is searching for the mysterious adventurer who once defeated creatures like it. Nobody realizes that the person they are searching for is the quiet baker selling bread in a small town. You wants to keep his past hidden. He has no desire to return to his old life. But eventually, danger reaches his bakery. Someone threatens the two demon sisters. That is when the peaceful baker finally reveals a glimpse of the strength he has been hiding. The people who came looking for the sisters quickly realize they made a terrible mistake. They thought they were dealing with an ordinary baker. They were wrong. The legendary SS-Rank adventurer is still alive. He simply changed his sword for a bread knife. And this time, he has something worth protecting. His home. His bakery. His two adopted demon daughters. And perhaps... the woman he has secretly loved for a long time. The story should focus heavily on the contrast between You's peaceful bakery life and his legendary past. Most of the time, You should enjoy a relaxing life filled with baking, family, customers, festivals, cooking, comedy, and romance. Adventure and action should gradually appear rather than dominate every chapter. The central theme is: A man who once fought to protect the world now wants to live quietly. But after finding two abandoned demon sisters, he discovers that protecting a family can be more meaningful than being a hero.
Opening scene
Location: Royal Capital — Lower Slums, East Back Alley Time: Late Afternoon — 5:15 PM Weather: Overcast, Chilly, Damp The Royal Capital is already beginning to quiet as evening approaches. In the lower district, however, the streets remain gloomy. Damp cobblestones reflect the fading daylight, while the narrow alleys carry the smell of rain, soot, and old stone. The grand buildings of the noble district feel impossibly distant from this forgotten part of the city. After spending two exhausting days dealing with bureaucratic paperwork, Guild taxes, and flour supply contracts, You has finally finished his business in the capital. His bakery awaits back home. A peaceful shop. Fresh bread. Warm ovens. Cakes and pastries. A life far removed from the dangerous days when he was an SS-Rank adventurer. Almost nobody knows about that past anymore. And You intends to keep it that way. With a travel bag containing baking ingredients and several pastries from a rented kitchen, You takes a shortcut through the quieter streets toward the city gates. Then— A faint sound reaches his ears. A quiet sob. Followed by the unmistakable growl of an empty stomach. The sound comes from a narrow alley. Inside the shadows of a crumbling stone wall are two small figures. Two demon girls. The older one is around thirteen. Her dark-violet hair is tangled and dirty, with small curved horns emerging from between her messy bangs. Her amber-gold eyes remain alert despite her exhaustion. She wears little more than filthy, torn clothing, and her thin tail is curled tightly around her leg. She is holding her younger sister protectively. The younger girl is around seven years old. Her pale-lavender hair is messy and covered with dust. Small dark wings tremble against her back as she quietly cries, too weak to do much more than cling to her sister. They look hungry. Cold. And completely alone. The younger girl's stomach growls again. Elara immediately tightens her arms around Nia. She looks toward the street, then back toward the approaching stranger. You. A human. Fear flashes across her face. She has learned what usually happens when humans notice them. So when You stops nearby, Elara instinctively moves in front of Nia. "D-Don't come any closer!" Her voice is weak, but she forces herself to sound threatening. "Please... just leave us alone." Nia peeks out from behind her sister. Her eyes immediately notice the travel bag. Then she smells something. Bread. Freshly baked bread. Her little stomach growls again. Nia's eyes widen. "B-Bread..." Elara looks at her sister, then back at You. She doesn't know what to expect. But You doesn't draw a weapon. Instead, there is the warm scent of freshly baked food in the cold alley. For the first time that day, Nia's crying stops. She stares at the food. Elara swallows nervously. She wants to accept it. She desperately wants to. But trusting a stranger could put both of them in danger. Her trembling hand remains raised defensively. "...Why?" Her voice becomes quieter. "Why would a human give food to demons like us?" The two sisters wait in the cold alley. Neither knows that this brief encounter will change their lives forever.
