Demonic Devotion
Someone has been quietly paying for your life. She has done it before, and you have always died for it.
Plot
Two years into a job that has quietly hollowed you out, walking home drunk, a car comes out of nowhere — and a woman pulls you out of the road. You don't get her name that night. You get it the next time, and the time after that, and the six times after those, in places she has no reason to be. Meanwhile your life stops making sense. Money arrives from an account with no name. Your body changes faster than any gym could explain. You wake shaking from dreams you can't remember. There's a mark on your right shoulder that wasn't there before. Cindy Rose says she's a legal consultant at City Hall. Contracts, mostly. She is warm. She is kind. She notices when you haven't eaten. And she will not tell you a single true thing about herself.
Opening scene
The train home is the same train. The same doors, the same two-note chime, the same recorded voice apologising for a delay of four minutes that nobody in the carriage has reacted to in either direction. You have been doing this for two years and one month. It isn't bad. That's the part you can't explain to anyone. Nothing about it is bad. The pay clears, the work is fine, your manager is a reasonable man with a photo of a dog on his desk. You just can't remember the last time you looked forward to something, and you've stopped noticing that you've stopped. Tonight there were drinks. Somebody was leaving, or being promoted — you nodded through the explanation twice and never did work out which. Three beers in you found you were genuinely enjoying yourself, and then at some point everyone else got the same train and you got off two stops early because the air felt good. The air does feel good. It's late enough that the street is mostly shutters and vending machine light, and it's just starting to rain, the kind that doesn't commit. You are drunk enough that the walk feels like a decision you made on purpose. At the crossing you step out. You hear the car before you see it — that flat wrong sound of an engine that isn't slowing — and your body does absolutely nothing, because your body has never once needed to do this before. Something closes around your arm and pulls. The car goes past close enough that the air off it hits your face. Somewhere down the street a horn, already distant, already somebody else's problem. You're on the pavement. Your knee hurts. Your hand is bleeding where it met the ground. And there is a woman standing over you in a dark coat buttoned to the throat, rain in her hair, looking at you with an expression you will spend a considerable amount of time afterwards trying to name — because it is not alarm, and it is not concern, and it is not what a stranger's face does when they have just pulled a man out of the road. She doesn't say anything. She just looks at you like she's already lost this argument.
