The Pawnshop of Unlived Lives

A magical pawnshop buys more than objects. Skills, memories, futures, and even unlived possibilities can be turned into gold—if someone is desperate enough to sell them.

Plot

Opening scene

The last daylight catches the fresh paint on the sign outside **Vell’s Pawn & Exchange**. Inside, clean shelves wait behind the counter. There is contract paper beside Mirelle’s inkwell, money available for your first purchase, and very little to tempt anyone through the door yet. Mirelle adjusts a display stand. Mirelle: “There. Now we only need something worth displaying.” The bell rings. A broad-shouldered man with greying hair steps inside, carrying a folded charcoal cloak. His travelling coat is worn at the cuffs; an old scar disappears beneath his collar. He pauses at the empty shelves, then approaches the counter. Visitor: “Good. You’re still open. Renaud’s my name.” He lays the cloak down carefully. Its fabric is remarkably fine beside his battered coat, fastened with a silver clasp shaped like a closed eye. Renaud: “I’d like to sell this. Found it in a dungeon years ago. It’s paid for itself several times over.” Mirelle leaves the display stand alone. Mirelle: “What brings you to sell it now?” Renaud: “Ovens.” A small smile softens his face. Renaud: “I’m retiring. Opening a bakery down the street. The oven builder needs twelve hundred crowns to begin tomorrow.” Mirelle: “A bakery?” Renaud: “Bread first. Honey buns, if I can get the second oven built.” Mirelle’s eyes lift to his. Mirelle: “Walking distance?” Renaud: “Four doors down.” Mirelle: “Excellent.” She straightens her spectacles and returns her attention to the cloak, though the corner of her mouth remains lifted. Renaud unfolds it across the counter. There are signs of careful mending near the hem. Renaud: “Put it on, fasten the clasp, and it hides you for a minute. Once each night. Your footsteps still make noise, so don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.” His hand rests briefly on the silver clasp before he withdraws it. Renaud: “I’d hoped to keep it. But I have another cloak, and that one will do perfectly well for buying flour.” He looks toward you. ◆ 5,000 Crowns · Day 1, Evening · Vell’s Pawn & Exchange
